Japanese made the butt stocks using 2 pieces because they did not have large pieces of wood. It is not cracked it is normal. The separating is due to normal wood expansion over the decades.

Couple of corrections. WWII M1 Carbines originally came without bayonet lugs. Those were added very late in the war or during the post WWII rebuild program. Medics would have never carried the heavier M1 Garand. Some did carry the Carbine, mainly in the Pacific. If that's a "New" production Inland Manufacturing M1 Carbine and it's a "early" production model as you say you've owned it for awhile (FYI, Inland Manufacturing didn't start making those till 2012) be aware they had issues with bolt hardness in the 1st years production. If that were my Carbine I would check with them to be sure. "New Inland" as it's known among collectors doesn't use true USGI spec bolts, theirs are slightly different in length. You either have to use one of their bolts or a new production Auto Ordnance made bolt (same supplier for parts) The good news is M1 Carbine ammo has come down in price, use Ammoseek to find the best pricing. My "Bonafide's" on this subject, I've owned 22 of them over the years, mainly USGI's plus some "commercial" copies like yours. I currently own 12 of them, a mix of USGI or higher end commercial models. Final comment, USGI Carbines have become VERY pricey the past few years, well in excess of what you paid for that "New" Inland Enjoy it, and here's a link to a sight that will give you more info on the subject www.m1carbinesinc.com/carbine_inland.html
