Hi Mark, great explanation of this topic, and thanks for making the playlist of these videos! Outside of the law school route or attaining one of the jobs you've mentioned in your previous video (Patent Engineer, Technology Specialist, Patent Agent, etc.), is there value in taking the exam for individuals who want to continue being involved in technical work? Or inventors who want to patent their own ideas and have the qualifications to take the exam? It sounds like a lot is learned on the job to gain applicable value in patenting beyond taking the exam, so I'm not sure how much passing the exam helps unless you get into one of those roles. Still, I'm curious about people who pass the exam and find ways to leverage the skillset and knowledge outside of those specific jobs or going to law school. Do people in executive roles or Technical Project/Product Management benefit from applying the knowledge strategically or when communicating with legal stakeholders? Does it provide a foundation for learning more about patent drafting for engineers at a company or inventors? Any insights are appreciated!
I can see it being of some marginal benefit in many circumstances. But probably not worth the time and effort and money it would cost to really learn this material. I would imagine that employers would consider it interesting, and might help to break a tie between two otherwise equally matched candidates. But an advanced degree or work experience would almost certainly be valued more highly. I wouldn't pursue this seriously unless you want to be a Patent Agent or Attorney.
