Straight off the back of the UK general election, I was lucky enough to work on this year's US Election coverage, specifically for BBC Arabic & BBC Persian alongside a very talented team to create a suite of real-time VizRT graphics for 3 Studios, which were all being used simultaneously. The concept of a reusable live data-fed "cards", inspired from the UK third-form design by Andrew Harris, w...

how are they making this?
Hi there, specifically are you asking about the graphics and how it all works live? If so let me know and at some point I'll try and explain the best I can. Cheers
@ThomasDoukinitsas How it works live. I mean, I know about greenscreen studios, but these seem like real studios combined with greenscreen.
So it all comes down to these main things in a simplified version: -All cameras have tracking sensors, which are capturing data about where the camera is in the real space. Position, Rotation, Camera Zoom, Focus etc -We also have an accurate 3D model of the building. This is usually either a 3D scan using LiDAR scanners, or a model built from the original architect plans. -Lastly we have graphics computers with high performance hardware and strong GPUs, running specialized broadcast graphics software (in this case vizrt, but it could also be something like unreal engine), capable of talking the tracking information, live camera input and creating a composite image with the graphics. Now the trick we used here to "reveal" parts of the real building, is since we have a 3D model of the building, we used parts of it to create a "mask" to reveal parts of the camera input in the correct places, so instead of seeing graphics in those areas of the image, you would see the real building. Hope that explained it a bit, and hopefully one day I'll be able to release a behind the scenes clip showing these things a bit more. Feel free to subscribe to get notified for any future clips.
What, they're having indian and Muslim translations??? This is fucking Britain for crying out loud!
Hello, the BBC offers a variety of language channels as part of the BBC World Service. You can see what languages are being produced by going here: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_World_Service And scrolling down to the "Languages" section.
haha microphones to let you know lol.
It's easy to criticise Rush but his pushing boundaries didn't go without notice.
He wasn't just pushing boundaries though. He had no way to check the hull integrity and ignored experts that warned him about it.
He was pushing his luck not boundaries. His so-called "innovations" were just "innovative" ways to die. That's all.
Don't trust a design of a money hungry fool who put profits over safety,
There's so many tho
Yet everyone thinks Musk is the second coming
Studio B never look this spectacular!
My goodness, that’s breathtaking!
Journalism is being replaced by the 1:29 I T professional. Not a safe swap YMMV
Incredible work! Loved seeing this all played out - super smooth! Fascinating reading what was mentioned about needing to balance quality vs what the engines could do, seemed like a lot of churning happening! Does this also explain the slight lag in animation with the constituencies changing colour (1:08)? And given the size of the atrium in Central Square the graphics coverage of that area (incl the balcony) must have been pretty hefty! Is it also the same tech set up (tracking and software) used in both NBH and CSq? Also appreciating the 'unpretty-fied' names used for each location at 1:16; purely from an aesthetics standpoint it keeps it quite techy for the casual viewer, a further example of the scale of the operation.
Hello and thanks for your comment. Yes, the engines were trying to do quite a bit of processing when they received data (essentially the data contains information about the current state of constituencies, so the scene script has to decide a lot about animations and how to get from one state to another). The slight lag you mentioned is probably the engine receiving data, and the script running and deciding what it needs to do. The tech set up is similar in some aspects (same rendering technology), but also had quite a few differences (tracking, use of LED vs chroma key etc).
Impressive work, how long does this project take to arrange and complete
Usually something like this could take from many months to a few years due to the amount of moving parts
What a 3D Graphics Thunderstorm. Actually while watching the show its more confusing then helping.
Out of interest, did you test the graphics on people to see how clear they are?
naughty journalists go in the election graphics hole
I do feel a bit bad for you making such a wonderful swingometer and then it being completely useless as we have the most nonuniform swing election in livijg memory.
Jeremy Vine is not a patch on Peter Snow :(.
why cant we have the 2005 tony blair one?
A great graphical product during the broadcast. The virtual #10 on the side of the studio normally behind the camera was a particularly nice touch -- especially that "sunrise" arc shot just before 6AM. When I first heard they were just going to repurpose Studio B vs building a custom set I was a bit disappointed, but the extended graphics made it feel like an almost new space.
The Downing Street CGI looks like its being rendered in a lower resolution than is being broadcast. You can almost see the pixels.
@@_Madfly We had to do a lot of quality Vs performance balancing to get the graphics to render at a steady 50i, as the graphics engines not only had to render the graphics, but also do data parsing, chroma keying (as it was done internally on the engine), lens distortion and tracking data, plus all the reverse projections required for the LED. However in the future we'd like to see what's possible to increase the fidelity of the graphics.
Are you the one who made that creepy sunak that blinked and always followed the camera?
I can't remember making that... might have been another broadcaster you're thinking of. We mainly used party leaders as photographs in boxes or on screens.
That was Sky
Really impressive from a technical perspective however I find the coupling of entertainment and politics uncomfortable.
Fantastic work, Tom.
Fantastic work, eveyrthing looked so slick and professional this year!
Good stuff! Is there a version of the 3d hex map for the actual results?
The hex map in the scene could display those results, as the custom control software was just sending a list of constituencies with colour and height information... however I'm not sure if it got used on the night, possibly a "forecast" version was used that was very close to the final results as there were only a few left. But the graphic was definitely built to also do that.
"frame-multiplexing LED capable of sending different images to different cameras, but also allowing for Jeremy Vine to have his own "presenter" view" If you have a BTS of this, I'd love to see it
Hello, a lot of behind the scenes stuff was shot, just need to get the appropriate permissions cleared before doing anything with it... Would love to be able to show some of what went on!
When did they do the historical analysis
We only did it once, towards the end of the night.

I always love these graphics in elections. Thanks for putting in the effort into making these!
Incredibly smooth graphics for this election cycle - amazing :)
fabulous work!
This was a weird election. A party that barely got more than a third of the vote got two-thirds of the seats, and a party that received the third most votes wound up with fewer seats than a regional party that pointedly refuses to take them. You have to love FPTP.
It's the best system we have for a nation as diverse as Britain. Theres no point having just those in built up cities making decisions for rural areas.
@@ItsSafehandsyou do realise first past the post doesn’t lower the effective vote of cities right? Also why would you want a rural minority to have more political power than an urban majority?
@@deeznoots6241 the racists and uneducated leople in Clacton need our help. Let's hope them, not encourage them.
@@deeznoots6241 It's a weird political fetish that right wingers want to have, to give more power to rural areas instead of realizing that urban areas clearly have more people in them.
@@deeznoots6241This is the third time I’ve heard that argument and I cannot comprehend how someone can think that. My guess is that they’re blindly copying defences of the American Electoral College.
Keir Starmer is actually only the 4th Labour leader to win a general election.
Really nice graphics! Particularly liked the hexagon one's which showed the scale of majority
Thank you, in collaboration with the editorial team we tried to explore interesting ways of showing the data.

this is pretty nice! keep creating!
Looks great! I’d love to see studio B use that catwalk newsroom background on the national bulletins, some minor tweaks and they’d be the perfect look. Can’t wait to see how good the next GE graphics look.
