Featuring selections of ragtime, marches, fox trots and other piano instrumental pieces from the early 20th century. Many pieces are well-known, but some scores are quite rare. Also includes a large collection, nearly 300 pieces, of scores written by ragtime-era women.
Uncle Zeke's Medley Rag by Bertha Stanfield (1912)
Original listing and sheet music here: musescore.com/user/36482158/scores/20663008?from=youtube_share
Bertha Stanfield (1890-1926) was from Kansas and composed three good rags, including this nice folk rag. She composed several other pieces, including the patriotic march "America's Pinch Hit March" in 1919 as Bertha Stanfield Dempsey. She died at age 36 of tuberculosis. This rag was published by Bertha Stanfield in Baxter Springs, Kansas in 1912.
Many thanks to Mitchy for finding and sharing this rare score. It comes from the collection of Ragtime Dorian Henry whose UA-cam channel is at this link:

I have posted the copy of the original score at this link:

This is a reproduction of the original score. I have added accidentals where they were missing from the original. Also added repeat bars at Mitchy's suggestion, the original has no repeats.

Dreamy rag💙💙💙💙💙💙
Это просто прелесть!❤
I only knew the other one, 'Wild Flower Rag.' It's a beautiful song too! By the way, where on earth do you get so much information about ragtime?
Most of it comes from the Internet. A lot of info here: www.ragpiano.com/ragtime3.shtml
@@compukats Amazing! I didn't know about this website. I'd like to take my time to browse and study it. Thank you!
Decent rag but it’s no climbers ha
I was genuinely shocked at how good this was after reading the title - thank you for resuscitating this lost piece!
It is surprising how good many of these forgotten scores are, I'm happy to revive and glad you liked it!
Real cool rag
I do not have a good copy of the original score for Climbers Rag or the cover art depicting the 1911 St. Louis Cardinals but in the book Ragtime Rarities which was edited by the late Trebor Tichenor and published by Dover Books in 1975 there is a reproduction of the original cover with the music in this collection of ragtime. No I do not know where or how Tichenor obtained or found a copy of Climbers Rag.
You're right, there it is on page 242.
Excellent !! Thanks for work and time !! Very nice !!

Did you see my comment about Oak Leaf Rag which I posted on Dorian Henry's version of this piece?
Oak-Kay, I did.
I do try to behave properly most of the time but sometimes I am unable to resist temptation.
Class very catchy 🎹🎹🎹
Nice! Do you think you could do "Remus Takes the Cake" as another video? I love that tune.
That is a very good suggestion. I also have tons of other very good suggestions I'm slowly wading through, but hopefully I'll get to that one sooner or later.
@@compukats Alright, thanks!
Great rag!
One of my favorite rags! Thanks for uploading!
Now, if you could just have this score played by a human on a real piano, you'd have something.
I'd call it early novelty ragtime.
Yes, there's a lot of 1920s in this piece from 1915.
Beautiful. The {I N T E R E S T I N G} intervals and modulations are very {I N T E R E S T I N G}, but jokes aside, this is a great fox trot and it sounds great!
And ahead of its time in some ways also.
outstanding song :D
I enjoyed your interpretation of this piece
Thanks for sharing. Not a bad piece. I might try to learn it 🤔
Хорошо когда день начинается с классного регтайма!❤😊
That's true!
This is an amazing piece. It was worth it, wasn't it? Also, could I give a suggestion for one of your next pieces?
It's a great intermezzo. Yes, you may suggest.
Alright. Could it be the "I've got the Wonder Where He Went and When He's Coming Back Blues (1922)" by Phil Ohman? I didn't find the sheet music for it yet, but I'll keep looking.
@@peternewseterforever That's quite a score. I looked for it just now without any success. If you can find the original sheet music, yes. ua-cam.com/video/IE1Y15VhUWI/v-deo.htmlsi=j8PQhfKPF4YNLQ4a
@@compukats Never mind, my friend. I've also been searching and had no success myself. We'll try something else.
great tune for a melodrama!
It is truly excellent, and I agree with you - "I'd rate this as one of my all-time favourite intermezzos." Their stories might as well be _very_ tragic, but even through it, they made great songs, especially that this one almost made me cry. Say, are you planning on putting "Daphne (1911)" next?
Yes! Daphne by Bessie Boniel and J. Russel Robinson will be the next upload.
Can’t help but think the Beatles with this title.
But Luckey was first by 50 years.
Great piece! This must be quite rare - it didn't turn up when I was searching for various 'pepper' rags a little while back.
Glad you like it and can add to your Pepper collection! Yes it was in the hard-to-find category but Mitchy found it for me so hopefully now it can be heard more widely.
Beautiful this song reminds me of seeing the East Broad Top narrow guage railroad in operation back in 1960
This song is only 2 steps away from Penis Music.
Beautiful.
What a coincidence that you post this after I have just listened to the 1962 recording session of Roberts with Mike Lipskin. Guess it’s my Luckey day!
Good lucke has come your way! Was it this recording?: ua-cam.com/video/fFIBnvae3vE/v-deo.html
Has anyone published a transcription of Lucky''s recording of this piece?
All I can find is the Hank Duncan version: musescore.com/user/25549806/scores/12517168
It's so beautiful. Such a great rag.
It is a great rag, helped to make Luckey famous.

What a beautiful piece. Congrats on 2K, compukats! What a great (bi)milestone you reached. Might as well expect 3K sooner than you think, eh?
Thanks! It's the first 1K that's the hardest, so maybe you're right!
@@compukats Yeah, you're telling me 😅
A fire rag- yeah the quirkyness in spots actually works…
This is an absolutely beautiful rag; I love it. Also, I feel that in the D-flat major part (5 flats), the clashing of notes A-flat and B-flat is weird, but it works well with what surrounds it. That's what I call "impressive": adding notes that normally sound bad, but use them in a certain melody to become good.
It's a chromatic passing tone connecting the Ab to the Bb.
I find this well-written slow rag exerts a sort of "soothing" effect on the listener.
Nice one! in 5 days it's Luckey Robert's birthday
Happy birthday, Luckey! He'll be 135 years old if his presumed birth year was 1889 (nobody knows the exact year for certain).
Charming; trio section a bit mediocre.
Does anyone know the meaning behind the title? Was it released during Christmas?
This is an amazing job! Luckey was surely lucky for such a great outcome of such a ridiculous-looking piece, but IT WAS WORTH IT. Also, this is the first time I see you use pedals.
Somewhat more challenging than normal to transcribe, it did come out well. I've used pedalling occasionally, the previous score "Happy Jack" had some. Also Scott Joplin's "Cleopha", "Leola" and others use pedalling.
@@compukats Nice.
Start sounds like Joseph Lamb.
One of my favorites also--especially when I have an appreciative audience listening to me play this piece.
