The Strange Reality of Poland's Third Biggest City - Łódź
A Documentary of the Third Biggest City in Poland. It is a film seen through the lens of a foreigner, coming to this strange place called Łódź or Lodz as the English speakers pronounce it.
This was a frustrating but necessary journey that made me re-think most of what I think I knew about this small existence here on earth.

      Hi, thx for your message, I hope you will like your stay in the city it has a lot to offer. Regarding this history I bought a book about the jewish ghetto and found some maps when googling on it that I used to navigate myself, but in general close to the st. Marys assumptions church you find a lot of the material that I covered and it is in this area the former ghetto used to be. On this link you should find a pretty accurate picture of where the ghetto was and were you can find these streets: www.lodz-ghetto.com Hope this helps. Merry Xmas from Finland

      Hi, thanks for your reply. Yes, it is a bit of a shock, the contrasts are so strong when you come to piotrkowska street and compare it to the run down areas, which are basically everywhere. It is like entering a new world. I have been to the city a couple of times and am so surprised how much there is to learn about this diverse history that has happened here. It is mind blowing and pretty hard to digest.. I hope things are getting better soon.

    Buddy, I've lived in Łódź on and off since 2010 (mostly in poor neighbourhoods like stare bałuty). Even back then it was not terrible, and it has been improving ever since. Despite the poverty in some areas, the city has much to offer in terms of parks, general green areas, historical buildings, museums and most of all: facilities of higher education institutions. Most of the non-abandoned apartments in the old buildings (kamienice) are quite modern and livable, despite their appearance on the outside. The level of homelessness is not much worse or not at all as bad as most big cities in europe, and most of the homeless are so of their own free will, since there are plenty of organisations offering shelter and food (including the catholic church). As for the "fear" of violence you display throughout the video, it's almost completely unfounded. I urge You to compare the level of crime in Łódź to tourist traps like Paris. Other than the occassional nut or drunk, it's really not that bad for a city of its size. No offense, but this really seems like a poor attempt at covering a problem that's not really there for the sake of drama and clicks.

    • @talkingsociety5560
      @talkingsociety5560 4 дні тому

      Hi, thanks for your reply. I appreciate the honesty. I believe you and yes the city has a lot to offer. Regarding the fear, it is probably as you say, completely unfounded, as I tried to hint with the confirmation bias. I will take this to heart and do a better job next time covering the problems. It could have been more deep investigative journalism type of style but yeah I settled on this kind of of style this time to try to bring awareness about certain issues as I saw and understood them. Well, regarding clicks I wasn't expecting even to have this much views as the video even had during this short time, I simply wanted to make a good video and to be truthful, although I understand that there is a bit of a paradox with that with adding music, but it seems like in these days if you don't add a little bit emotional spark (like in movies and in documentaries you see on TV) people don't find it so interesting. I thought I am probably too boring to listen to so maybe I need to do as "all the other" filmmakers and add some music so they will keep listening to what I have to say. Well anyhow, I know how this can seem childish in a way (on behalf of me), but of course I want people to see the videos, but integrity and truth is of course of the uttermost essence (should always be the most important thing). But probably I can make a good video without music too. I guess am experimenting my way forward to find the best option. Anyhow, appreciate your feedback, it is very important. Thanks again

      One thing came to my attention about what you said about homelessness, that they have chosen this out of free will,even though there is some "help" to get. Have they chosen this out of their own free will? What is free will? Does free will exist?

    • @piotrkoodziej4336
      @piotrkoodziej4336 21 годину тому

      @@talkingsociety5560 Appreciate the reply. Just wanted to say that it's not so bad having lived here for quite a few years, but at the end of the day it's your video. As for the free will aspect: let's not get philosophical. All I mean is that if they want help, there are people and organizations in the city willing to offer it, as long as they're willing to kick destructive habits like alcoholism.

Yes there is a lot of people trying to help, am sure of it. And yeah I believe too many would be able to kick their destructive habits if they accepted the help (although statistics regarding trying to measure rehabs effectiveness and so on are at times questionable). It is very beautiful various people try to help in their manner of possibility. I appreciate your feedback. Hope I will come back to the city some of these days. Merry Xmas from Finland

    To understand Lodz and other postindustrial towns in Poland is more than just showing run down neighbourhoods. You´re looking just for cheap excitement, underlying it with sad music and suggesting danger everywhere, obviously without understanding anything what happened there. Or you are simply pursuing an agenda. I would suggest to learn history first before just sharing your impressions and uninformed comments. Lodz, until 1939 a multicultural town wit a jewish population of over 30% and until ten years ago the second largest city in Poland, was hit hard by the economic transformation of the late 80ies and 90ies. Lodz was communist Polands textile hub, the Manchester of the east, as they called it. When Poland shook off the command economy, most of the textile factories had to close down resulting in massiv pauparisation and a hudge unemplyment up to 35 % of the population, many left the town and went abroad or to Warsaw. Those who stayed had nothing to lose anymore. Only since Poland´s accession to the EU, in fact since 2008, when money started to flow, there are significant founds pumped in there to rebouild delapidated places in Lodz and, in fact Lodz´s transformation is a big success story. They are doing it systematically, quarter by quarter and inf fact Lodz´s revitalisation programm is one of the most successfull in Poland. You are just showing what rests to be done because this generates clicks. vasab.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/2015_10_28VASAB_ws_revitalization_Revitalization_of_Lodz.pdf If you had visited the town 25 years back you would not believe how much it has changed. here some glimpses of Lodz in 1979, when all ot the town, actually all of Poland looked like that: ua-cam.com/video/RxRUez_hnZg/v-deo.html It´s important to see the trend. And yes, there are still many poor people there but that´s still the consequence of almost 50 years of a failed system and 25 years of Manchester capitalism and far too week social policies of the postcommunist governments. Luckily, unlike Russia or Belarus, live improves fast in Poland.

      Hi, thx for your reply, I appreciate you taking the time to give thorough information. Yes I have studied a little bit of the history, most probably not enough but I am very fascinated into the development of Lodz, the emerging textile industry and how Lodz became a big city from being only a small village in less than 100 years and so on. I have been to Lodz a couple of times before and I always learn something new. I didn't really come to Lodz in terms of tourism, but that is another topic. Will watch and read that what you sent to learn more. Thanks for that. I have read some book about the history of Lodz and found the Jews of Lodz and the Poznaski Family very good. I like to think I know a great deal of the history in the city compared to many but I wouldn't call myself an expert, and obviously there are many that know much more than me, as you concluded. Is there a person without an agenda in this world I would love to meet that person. I try to show a mirror and bring awareness about certain issues. No one pays me to do this, I don't get any money for doing this, and god knows if I ever will get some money doing it. And I am not hired by anyone to do this either. And I don't work for any company or any organization for that matter. I just did that what I felt was an obligation to my conscious. If it is right or not, I have no idea. But in the future I will try to do better research, and I believe you that most probably a lot of progress has been done in certain areas. I appreciate your feedback, it is always good to know what I can improve and what people think. I am thankful for that. I am experimenting my way forward and will try to improve every time I make something new. There is a lot to learn on my part

    Łódź has been mismanaged by the comunists because they wanted to replace older parts of the city with commie blocks. They ran out of money they borrowed in the west tho so what we are left with are 19th and early 20th century buildings in older parts of the city and huge commie blocks that were built around industry that was too mismanaged to compete within free trade. Many people left Łódź because they had no work and their buildings and streets were left to rot by the governement. Now its improving although the city govenment is pretty bad ( in comparsion with comunists they are great).

Hi, Thanks for sharing. It is very tragic indeed. There are so many stories that are still untold and I hope just by creating a little bit of awareness of this, maybe the world can remain a bit safer and learn from the past. Even though it sometimes doesn't look like it, I think we will get there in the end and will have lasting peace in the world

    I do not think there is a more barbaric period in European History . The German people and their NAZI party did a lot of evil and inflicted a great deal of suffering on East Europe.

    The needs of Capitalism demands workers who are obedient, and unchallenging. It is very reductive, and illogical because human beings are extremely varied.Nepotism has always existed, but has worsened since globalised Capitalism ruined local industries. Sadly, our political systems refuse to promote egalitarian laws and policies.In truth, it starts at the top, our politicians set poor examples and promote their own family and friends and also take advantage of privatisation, stock ownership and property ownership. Here in the UK our politicians and Lords control the law that would protect house renters, because it is against their own interests.It is out of control, and we need to change our political system. Our politicians in the UK are shameless.

      Thanks for your reply. Yes you are right we need a new political system that can handle this new reality we are in. There is too much inefficiencies domestically and globally that it is such a pity things are just continuing. Read that there is over 300 000 homeless in France last year. That is a lot of poverty in a "successful nation" which I think can highlight a bit about the problem we see in our world, even though we should have money to eliminate much of this suffering and lack of housing and food etcetera. I think the world is starting to wake up. I have hope

    Ah yes, every pothead is beautiful and talented and has a lot of to offer to society and of course it's a society's fault that they don't do anything meaningful.

    • @talkingsociety5560
      @talkingsociety5560 7 місяців тому

      Thanks for sharing. Everyone is beautiful and talented in their own ways. I think that whole search for meaning stuff is very individual and yeah it can be hard to find what you are interested in sometimes, but I think to be unemployed is also a great opportunity to find that what really is your calling. And then you of course you kind of have to follow your dream I guess. Maybe it is like the heroes journey each and everyone needs to figure out for themselves, regardless of what the society is doing. But indeed some environments can sometimes be more beneficial than other's depending on what you want to do. There is so many possibilities if one starts to look a little bit on the surface of the world.

      Hi, Thx for your answer. Am answering late, I didn't see your response until now. That sounds really alarming. Our form or notion of "democracy" it not really doing a good job to keep away, how should I sugar coat it..behaviours that are not in the best interest for the collective self interest (meaning, for the people). Sometimes I really wonder what people are thinking, maybe some are not really aware of what they are doing and sometimes I think they just don't care and think solely about themselves and thus turn to abuse of power in its multitude of forms it can take..There is a couple of alternative scenarios regarding the psychology at play here. This is just my opinion but I think we should have a new political system where there is no personality cult and no form of this kind of drama politics (drama politics can be seen as a waste of collective resources, it is like stealing) ..but instead having a sustainable way to actually get things done, and be driven by facts or let's put it, science instead of ideologies and emotions (of course someone can probably argue science can be that too but..). I think it really shouldn't be so hard to make a system like this viable, where people actually will have insight into what is going on and what should be the right decision to take. The design of todays political systems in the west is not working, or maybe it is just me who is wrong. I think we are seeing an evolution that will have to happen if we are going to survive as a species and as a planet, and we need this system fast. In fact I don't think party politics is really needed at all. I mean as I understand it most of the people who are elected anyways into our governments and parliaments are not either qualified for the work they doing or are supposed to do be doing. If I am not mistaken in our so called current state of the democracy here in Finland and probably in the rest of the west, you don't have to have any "qualifications" in order to get elected or voted in to parliament say, except that you need to convince enough people to vote on you and belong to a party. You don't need to have professional experience of economics, law, medicine and so on... Yeah I guess this is one of the flaws with democracy, you can end up with people who are not competent but whom act as they are doing competent things. I just think it is plainly obvious how this will turn out, and I guess that is what we are seeing now on a global scale with "democracy"... a mess Another thing many voters here in my "home country" are wondering about is "what the heck are these politicians really doing". People can't really figure out what is going on. .It seems like most citizens here don't really have any idea of what they are doing, except the few times something is being told in the news. Which they also control here too for a larger part. One of the biggest TV channels (Yle) here in Finland, is a stately owned organization, and many folks are getting their news from this media or their news magazine outlet. I guess there might be a bit of a conflict of interest going on here, or how should I put it, regards to the credibility of this outlet. Interestingly enough a lot of people I have talked to don't seem to question this at all that there might be anything wrong with the information coming from a "state owned news organization" or that there might be any bias here.. I guess as someone could say "it is complicated"...

    I understand how frustrating it must be. I really hope you find a decent job soon. I have lived in a few countries, including Finland. Although there are problems there, things are far better than in many other parts of Europe. That doesn't mean Finns should sit back and accept things, we should all fight for better. On the subject of Finnish racism. There is a tendency to lump all racists together. The little racism I have seen in Finland, is usually older people who don't have much experience of foreign people, many other countries experienced this decades ago. This is fear of the unknown and can be overcome. Terve.

      Thanks for your reply. Yes it can be quite a difficult and sensitive topic this indeed, but I think it is going to get better. People adapt. Well I think it is important that more and more people start to talk about all these things we were addressing in the video. I think the society will then have a chance then to progress in a more opener fashion. I also kind of start to think of all the skilled talents worldwide that nobody are seeing for what they are or what they have to contribute. But I guess it is also up to us, each and everyone to make the best of the situation we are in so we can live a sustainable healthy life.

    Visited Koh Chang and Lonely Beach 8 years ago, and really loved the island. Can't wait to visit again in late Feb/early March. How was the nightlife at Lonely Beach, because Covid seems to have hit it hard? Are Songthaews driving frequently between the towns during day and night?

      Hi, Thx for your answer, am answering late, it totally flew under the radar. Yeah it is beautiful there. Well I thought it was not so much happening during night in Lonely Beach to be honest, was pretty slow. But that is just my opinion. I think it had been hit really hard, and there was many shops that looked to have foreclosed since then. And according to some locals it hadn't really catched on yet to the previous levels of tourists. I am not sure about the Songthaews during night though, but at least during day it was no problem. They go really frequent. Hope you go back to Thailand, it is such a nice place.
