Last walk on South Main Street in Hendersonville NC
Переглядів 8045 місяців тому
Starting 4/19 the last 3 blocks of South Main Street are going to be redone. The last 3 blocks on the street layout dates back many decades. While many of the buildings have changed, the street was pretty much the same. US Route 25 went down this section until the late 1970’s, so it was 4 lanes to accommodate the traffic volume. That’s not necessary anymore. I wanted to document how it looked b...

Late Saturday afternoon drive, heading North on the Old US 25 Route in the Greenville SC watershed. This section was part the main route between Hendersonville NC and Greenville SC until around 1981. It was bypassed by a 4 lane highway to the west. It was once part of a route that stretched from Michigan to Georgia. Originally part of one of the eastern legs of the “Dixie Highway” until it rece...

Desert Storm return, 6500th Transportation Squadron Edwards AFB

This video was shot for the 6500th Transportation Squadron at Edwards AFB. With the 25th anniversary coming up, I thought I would post it online, in hopes that some of the service members or their families will recognize themselves. I couldn't get the video to load from my seven year old PC, so I used my iPhone to record this.

Interior video showing you drivng are the best. Like the 4 speed k car video. This one 👎
If I had a GoPro, I probably would have tried something like that. I was just using my iPhone and it was mounted on my instrument panel. This was an impromptu shoot anyway. I wanted to showcase the Historic Highway in my area. The road was kind of rough and it was hard to make it that good, with what I was working with.
That doesn’t make any sense. In 85 it should have had a 2.2L Chrysler engine. There was no 4 speed for that engine. Should have been a 5 speed.
@@RetroAnachronist it does have the 2.2 liter carbureted engine. 1985 was the last year the 4 speed manual was offered. The 81-85 base manual was a 4 speed. The 5 speed was optional, and became standard in 1986.
@@flashg67 huh. Guess I don’t know as much as I thought. Heh. Was into those cars for 20 years, managed to never see a 4 speed. But now that I think about it, I do recall mention of one.
This is my first time seeing a Dodge Aries with a manual transmission! My late parents used to rent these cars during the 1980's, and I thought all of them came with automatic transmissions.
I commuted from home to city 92 miles round trip a day in an 82 plymouth reliant with the "bigger" 2.6L Mitsu motor. She was a loyal car, never left me on the side of the road for 85K miles that i packed onto it. i was once radared doing 105mph in it!!!
I had chance to purchase a Aries with a straight drive transmission.. but I missed out ..
what did you get for it may i ask?? looks very nice!!! always wanted one of these in a wagon form.
One thing that surprises me 5:25 and that I don't remember : no need for a rod to keep the hood open and yet they were in a position to cheapen out on it.
It's certainly not the engine which suffers from ''rev hang'' (1985) but rather your microphone. We are here after all to hear the engine rev up and down, but that doesn't happen because of the cut-out of your microphone.
Amerikanci People doesnt know drive manual
Greetings from Italy! Here it’s kinda hard to afford a Mustang (2.3 EcoBoost), so I went for the little Fiesta ST for now..
So long but not goodbye since you're getting that return trip back home. I really like your take on being a caretaker too!
what a band
I had an '81 in high school, four door in gray 4 speed. Then I found another '81 4 speed in green a couple years later, four door. I had to buy it. The bent shifter was awesome, 3rd gear was way out there! Thanks for sharing.
I had one in Monterrey Mexico in my youth but it was a 1984 model.
I remember that huge lever VERY well. My dad actually had a red Reliant sedan with a four speed manual. Eventually, my brother got it as his first car. I still remember that deep thump that it made when you shifted gears.
thanks i remember hendo since the 50's. so much has changed and not for the better.
Great video! Where the Truist Bank is now was Blair McLeod Motors that sold Land Rover and AMC, then Subaru. They had a location prior to that selling Studebaker at 305 N. Church Street, which is now Carland and Andersen.
I notice that some of this section still has the original granite curbstones... not many places in Hendersonville where that is true in 2024. Henderson gneiss - literally the bedrock of Henderson County. :)
So cool you know all those things.
We had the 83 wagon automatic tho with the 2.2. Coming from a 77 AMC Matador wagon it was a huge step down. Vinyl seats when we had had cloth! We were spoiled. A neighbor had the reliant wagon with 2.6 and it pulled much better than our 2.2 slug. Anyways two years later we got the caravan with 2.6 and automatic although we test drive a stick caravan on the lot. Great memories growing up in the 80s. Thanks mom and dad!
You could sand the top down, primer it , spray paint it with rattle can white and clear coat
Had a 89 2dr blue with 5 speed manny that i ordered from dodge
Such a nice, original family-cruiser. No doubt a ton of memories made and plenty more to be made.
Awesome car. Strong, sturdy, great ride
Nice old wagon. My dad had a similar 1977 wagon. Was a good car and treated him well for about the 18 years he had it.
Beautiful car
The mighty 2.2L lol lol. I drove the hell out of them. That engine sounds quite normal actually for its neglected condition, it’s actually pretty good! Yes it’s definitely been road hard and put away wet for sure! My last 2.2 was fuel injected in the then new 1994 Dodge Shadow. Had the 2.5 most of the time and turbo Daytona all new fuel injected. No trouble out of any of them. My parents had the earlier carbureted versions drivability wise not as good as the fuel injected, but heck that was the it was with everything prior to EFI. She will take you where you need to be and doit all day long! Yes from 1984 on the K’s all used the 2 bladed metal fan setup with or without AC. Even 2.2 equipped Dodge Dakota’s Omni/ Horizon’s used that setup as well, but pretty much on all cars and minivans to be honest. It changed when the 2.5L and EFI came in. Pretty thanks for the video. 👍👍
A 1985 has to be rare. That's got to be one of the last bench seat/floor shift cars. Back in High School, a friend of mine also had a 4-door Aries, but his was a 5-speed. It was also a buckets/console car.
Here is the explanation: The 4 speed was controlled by rods beneath the floor. So you could order with a bench or buckets. However the 5 speed was controlled by cables which ran above the tunnel. This meant the 5 speed necessitated bucket seats and a console ( to cover the cables) I know this because I tried to order an 83 wagon with a 5 speed and bench. Dealer didn't know this until he heard back from the factory saying the order couldn't be filled.
Excellent video! Perfect on the clutch! Growing up, I loved these cars and would would've gone for the manual transmission, but the automatic transmission worked well for me anyway. Thanks again for sharing this (got married, had kids, and ended up trading it in for a turbo Gen1 Caravan, amazing vehicle as I embarrassed many cars at the red/green lights)!
My ex wife and I bought a new 1989 plymouth with a manual trans. I believe it was a 5-speed. She had it for 14 years.
Owned a '81 4 speed Reliant wagan, and a '87 5 speed Voyager van; they both sucked. The '81 wagon never had heat, which is tough in Eastern Canada. The '87 Voyager dropped valve guides. Cheap, painful transportation. '85 T&C wagon with the 2.6 Mitsubishi powerpalnt; ultimate crap!!! Went back to Japanese cars, life got better
so cool. an almost forgotten aspect of driving
In a small intermediate such as this Dodge Aries Estate, what they really should have done is mounted the gear shifter on the steering column, even though it is a manual transmission. This was really common in cars, trucks and vans of all sizes up until the 1980s.
This was how the Dodge Dart was. And yes, the strippers with the bench seat should have had the shift lever on the tree. Bench seats with a floor shifter only really work in a truck.
@@matthewstorm5188Think that would have been very difficult in a transverse mounted engine..
Awesome! I wonder how many were made with manual transmissions. There was a 5 speed available as well from what I read.
I've heard you could buy these stripped like a 60s car. Like no power brakes or power steering. No ac of course and an AM only radio. Don't know if there was any total radio delete option. Good heater and a manual trans is all a guy really needs. Can always add a radio under the dash next to an aftermarket oil gauge.
I always thought all the manuals were 5 speed, I didn't think there was a 4 speed available. I would love to have either one. Good little cars.
They offered the 4 speed from 1981-85. They did have an optional 5 speed manual, but from 1986-89 they were all 5 speeds if you wanted a stick shift.
@@flashg67Actually the 5 speed was available from '83 on. See my reply to that AMC GUY.
I found a unicorn that was a 07 Toyota camry manual 5 speed years ago
I actually have the ultimate unicorn - a 2006 manual four door Accord with a V6.
Chrysler needs to bring that steering wheel back
This brings back memories for me! My family owned 2 4 door Plymouth Reliants, a 1984 & a 1985. Both were silver, 2.2 liter engine, 4 speed manual transmission, red vinyl bench seats, AM radio, no options. My brother got the 85 in the late 90s, drove it for a decade, and sent it to the wreckers at 600,000 km. Mom hated the 84, said it had a bad transmission and didn't shift well. She blamed the car for crashing into a ditch, and when my Dad came along she cussed him out for taking the 85 to work that day. The neighbors sure got a show that day! 🤣
Didn’t shift well? Sounds like par for the course. Those K-car manual transmissions were not the nicest things in the world. Certainly not nearly as nice as a Honda or Toyota manual transmission. But if you mastered driving a manual transmission on a K, you could drive ANY manual transmission car.
I love how STRIPPED and SIMPLE this Aries is. No AC condenser, 4 speed manual. I love it!
HOW DARE THIS SPACE MILLENIAL DESECRATE THIS LAST RARE CLASSIC WAGON FOLKS 😂
I think the 4 speed K cars are cool ///////////////////////////// I would love to have one //////////////////////

The only car in North Carolina that'll push all of both the McCandlesses' and Jason Torchinsky's buttons.
Those headrests of US-cars are all more likely to be designed as shoulder pads... ridiculous...
I have never seen or knew the Aries Reliant K cars have 4 speeds.
My grandparents had a Ford Granada with OD four speed. Only one I have seen.
Standard shift on the Aries and Reliant was discontinued after the 1986 model year do to poor sales
ThAT WOULD SUCK KIN THE SUMMER HEAT NO FACTORY A/C. I THOUGHT THAT WAS CANADIAN ONLY MODELS
I don’t drive it much in the summer.
