Stuck Behind Close Door - Alctron mp73eq
Wanted to record a whole song only using the Neve clone, Alctron mp73eq.
Wrote a Black Sabbath-ish song for this experiment. Kind of want 8 channels of Neve clones now.
The drums was recorded Glyn Johns style thru the Yamaha pm3500 console but then mixed thru the Alctron mp73eq channel by channel.

1176 Kt On sale for $150 right now!!!
the klark teknik 1176 is on sale for $150!!!!! sweetwater blowing em out
You should get it!
one other question, could i get buy nixing with just one of these or is two better?
If you want stereo you need two of them. One for left and another one for right.
they are blowing them out for $209 new at Sweetwater. I think I need one! However I am buying the behringer 1273 EQ neve mic preamp. Would it be overkill to have this standalone eq + the 2 channel mic pre and eq? what are some uses I could use this klark teknik for that would be better than the neve EQ/Pre?
You should get them all. I got neve style eq and im using it every time I track.

This explanation is wonderful. Having come from mixing on analog consoles and now learning digital, I have been trying to understand this very thing. Fortunately My Yamaha digital console has a analog gain knob and then a digital gain knob. This Discovery has transformed my mixes. Thanks again for the Explanation.
Thank you for sharing. And your welcome! 😊🙏
Got 2 more of these on order ❤❤❤
Lucky you! ❤️
Brazil here, very thank!
Thank you!
So set all my faders to -18d fs then apply a gain plug in on all tracks?
Set faders to 0 dbfs. Normalize the tracks so it hits the fader at -18dbfs. 🙏
Try this on vocals: 1st Pulltec cut low 100 Hz boost high 5 kHz then into a LA2A then into a 2nd Pulltec boost low and cut high back. This brings the vocal upfront in high density mix. 👌🏼
Thanks for sharing! I Will try that some day. I guess you use this as parallel procession?
@@Kenneth-F I don’t know, I wrote it down from an Andrew Scheps interview, still need to try it out myself 😀
@@Chaos-Dynamics yeah. Im shure he use it as parallel. He use alot of parallel!😊
Finally someone who explains it how it is, I’ve seen so many controversial videos about this. I even stopped following some channels who told utter nonsense about this 😊 I work on an analog console, all outside the box, you have to gain stage to -18 bBfs in order to not lose your headroom 👍🏼
Thank you! I got tired of all the myths thats floating around thats why I did the episode. What console do you use?
@@Kenneth-F Just an Allen & Heath GL2400, I wanted to use it for zero latency tracking monitoring but ended up using it for mixing and like it a lot.
@@Chaos-Dynamics clean and good sounding console. Shure is more fun to touch knobs instead of moving a mouse.
@@Kenneth-F One thing for sure, not only more fun but a much faster workflow. And the best part is mixing with your ears instead of your eyes.
@@Chaos-Dynamics 100% agree!
Sounds freaking great. I'm literally shedding a tear with all the great gear the mighty Behringer have been releasing this last few years. I did retube my EQP-KT with NOS Vintage Mazda tubes and there was a subtle improvement in warmth and clarity. But they sound fine without alterations. The biggest difference has been re-tubing my KT-2A with Madza and Matsushita tubes. It did drop in gain by about 20%, but it sounds like cream in the ears now. It's a thing of beauty now 😆
Would be great to hear a AB-test 🙂 To my ears i always thought different tubes did not make that big of a different.
@@Kenneth-F The difference is subtle, but noticeable. It isn’t worth spending 120 Euros on tubes ((I only bought them when I could get them for around 10-20 Euros by bidding on eBay) I tell you what, I can send you some sound samples when the new units arrive if you like?
@@EpicWinz That would be great!🙏❤️
Have you re-tubed it? Good demo BTW ❤
Well thank you! 🥰 No. Its all stock. I have a more recent episode where you can se me twisting the knobs. ua-cam.com/video/UWufVb4Xj3M/v-deo.html
@@Kenneth-F sweet, I will put on my headphones and take a look. I don't understand the hostility towards these units. I have 1 EQP-KT and have just ordered 2 more. As well as the KT-2A and 3 x 76-KT. Have you seen the video Glen from Spectre Sound did of the EQP-KT? He destroyed it with a sledgehammer! I think some people don't like to see others with nice gear at a low price. Gear Snobs getting butt-hurt 😆 🤣 😂
Yeah I have seen it. I also got the kt2a and kt76. Really happy with them all. One funny thing is that his review is the only bad one i can find online on the eqp-kt. I guess that says alot. I think I let the sales number speaks for it self.
@Kenneth-F I'm no stranger to high end gear. I have some nice bits and pieces including Neumann monitors, but whilst many manufacturers have discontinued a lot of their products the last few years (I mean try and find a good hardware fx unit) Behringer have done wonders with hardware synths and outboard.
@@EpicWinz yes they have. Im really interested of the neve style compressor snd preamp/eq. Thinking of building miniconsole with those preamps.
Interesting… I’m going to look deeper into this on my own and run some test before I start asking questions
You know where to find me. 😊
You are very fast, should do well!
LOL it went well.
Sounds amazing 👍
Well thank you! I sure love them! 😊🙏
Love this EQ it's time I go stereo.... I'm all for keeping it stock too, as long as you figure out the careful gain staging not to overpower the tube, no need to switch!
Thanks for sharing! I sure love mine too! All 4 of my eq's are stock. No need to change anything. 🥰🙏
Hey! This is a really useful video, and the snare sounds really great! I wonder now, how it will sound with decent heads. Thank you!
Hey! I havent change the heads but its time and I will do a video when I do it! Thanks for sharing! 🙏
@@Kenneth-F Amazing! Do let us know.
Wow - it really adds something. Didnt expect that. Compression is also nice doesnt sound top squashed
Is yours still runing without errors?
Yeah. After all these years all my klark runs without any problem. Got 7 different units of compression and eq.
Superb Review thank you I need two!!!
Youre welcome! 😊
Thank you! Very effectively explained :)
Well thank you! 😊
Unfortunately, these days many plugins require internet connection to authorize and operate
Thanks for sharing. I know and I dont use them. I wanna be able to work even when internet is down. 🙂
do you still use these comps?
Got 4 of these eq's. I use them all the time. Used them a couple of hours ago. Still love them after all these years!
i actually love this song, would add to my playlist for sure
Well thank you! You made my day! ❤️😀
very cool song!
I know. How ever I didnt make it. Downloaded it at cambridge multitracks. 🙏
@@Kenneth-F Ah nice! What's the name of the band? I need to have those multitracks.
@@bennyvandelocht4242 sorry but i dont remember. It was 5 years ago! 😁🙏
It depends how your converter is calibrated ....Some are calibrated at -16 dbfs ...They are not all at -18...
I have never had that. But hey so you get two more db of headroom. But still the analog wants to be hit with line level and most of analog emulated plugin wants to be hit with -18db. Dont need to be so anal about it. 🤷♂️
oh my god, you have a full studio but zero fkn talent
Well thank you for your time. So where can I find your talent?
oh to have the confidence of a middle-aged white dude who thinks anyone gives a ish about their opinion. stop.
Apparently you do. And why do you think i would let you tell me what to do?
….and here I was blaming myself and the plugins all this while! Bafflingly, so many mix and mastering engineers out there (with tonnes of subscribers) are yet to make a video as explicit as this! Wonder why? Thanks for throwing light on the fundamental mistake most of us are making. You saved me from “countless hours of endured agony and years of time” that could’ve gone into figuring this !! 🙏
Thanks for sharing and your welcome! ❤️🙏
good video! Some small points of clarification though: - dBu is a measure of voltage, and is an average signal level - dBFS measures peak. So something that shows 0VU (+4dBu) can vary a lot in dBFS levels. It’s rarely going to always be the case that 0VU is always -18dBFS. - While many analog modelled plugins are modelled for -18dBFS=+4dBu, it’s actually very common for manufacturers to use a variety of calibration levels. Sometimes it can be -12dBFS=4dBu, for instance, or anywhere in between. The only way to be sure is to check and not assume that it’s always -18dBFS. - furthermore, not all converters are calibrated or set up for +4dBu=-18dBFS. These actually vary a lot between different models and manufacturers. Some allow you to adjust the amount of headroom. This will greatly affect the dBFS level that a constant dBu value will show as.
Thanks for sharing! How ever i dont think we need to be so anal about it. If People have pro interface where they can calibrate headroom im shure they dont need to watch this episode. 🙏
The best recomendations is actually not an add, with annoying backing muzak distroying the agressive speech. Just listen to this guy preforming the product and you will understand without any arguments what so ever, that the instrument really has a lot of value. A bit like the first time you drive a Tesla, and you suddenly see the light.
❤
sounds good. why kt76 add some mid and thickness? how can that happen
Thanks! The thickness comes most from the FET transformer.
@@Kenneth-F im gonna get one . thanks for ur video
@@EchoReverb6 You welcome! 🙏 😊
I agree! The problem today is people believe they can record in a shitty room without a recording engineer and that later in the mix with plugins all the problems will be solved! No they won’t!
Thanks for sharing! Yeah, it will never be fixed in the mix.
You're absolutely right! That's why it's called "mixing ITB", not "recording ITB". Point taken. (BTW, Warren Huart made the same argument about 6 years ago)👍
Thanks for sharing! Wise man that Warren! Apparently it was needed to be told agen. 😊
Agreed!@@Kenneth-F
Printing Salvador Dali's clocks on a sheet of paper in the highest resolution will never replace or reflect the depth of the original. The texture of the images cannot be faked. The same principle applies to sounds.
Thanks for sharing. Its a good metaphore. 🙏

Top tips! Thanks a lot for the information!
Well thank you!
it just doesnt make sense, i upload a -8 lufs track to youtube and its not loud, it makes the audio quiet, please someone help
Without hearing it im guessing you have compressed it to much. Dont look at numbers. Use you ears.🙏
what media, politicians and financed 'tv experts' did to us - every time we sick we think it is 'covid'. every warmer day we think - climate change. like this never happened in the past. we have our memories cut out somehow. other that that, thank you for a video.
Thanks for sharing. However science is real.🙏
@@Kenneth-F indeed. it shows perfect correlation between temperature on earth and sun activity.
Do you automate or do just let the faders stay untouched?
I've found that -9 to -12 db lufs is the sweet spot, too loud it starts to sound harsh to the ear amd to low it starts to sound sterile and boring.
Thanks for sharing! I dont think that the numbers are that important. It all depends on the song. Guessing you mastering music thats sounds almost the same.
