Trying Portugal’s WEIRDEST Dessert? Come with us to Aveiro!
☀️ Sunday Funday in Aveiro & Costa Nova | Portugal’s Hidden Gems! 🇵🇹
It’s Sunday Funday again, and this time we’re off to Aveiro & Costa Nova for a day of canals, beaches, and (questionable) sweet eating skills! 😆🚣‍♂️🍬
We start with a road trip chat, catching up on the week, sharing a bit about our life in Portugal, and talking about our business (Your Casa Care-more on that below!). Then, we dive into Aveiro, aka the Venice of Portugal, to check out the colorful Moliceiro boats, the city’s gorgeous Art Nouveau buildings, and-of course-Ovos Moles, Portugal’s famous eggy-sugary treat. (Spoiler: one of us liked them, one of us... not so much! 🤣)
From there, we visit the Aveiro salt pans, admire the futuristic buildings at the University of Aveiro, and then head to Portugal’s tallest lighthouse at Barra. Finally, we wrap up the day in Costa Nova, where we admire those striped beach houses, take in the Atlantic views, and debate whether this might be the most Instagrammable place in Portugal! 🏖️🌊
✨ Oh, and about our business…
On the drive, we also chat about Your Casa Care-where we help people find their dream homes in Portugal, even if they can’t be here in person! 🏡💻 With our virtual property viewings, you get to see properties properly-not just through the weird angles and bad photos that some listings use. If you’re thinking about moving to Portugal and want an honest, boots-on-the-ground look at homes, check out YourCasaCare.com! 🚀
If you are in to fermented foods:

📍 In This Sunday Funday Video:
✅ Road trip chat + a bit about our business 🚗🏡
✅ Exploring Aveiro’s Canals & Moliceiro Boats 🚣‍♂️
✅ The Story Behind Ovos Moles 🍮 (and our reactions!)
✅ Art Nouveau in Portugal 🎨
✅ Aveiro Salt Pans & History 🧂
✅ The University of Aveiro 🏛️
✅ Barra Lighthouse - Portugal’s Tallest! 💡
✅ Costa Nova’s Striped Houses & Beach Life 🏖️
🎥 If you love travel, property-hunting adventures, and making big life changes before retirement, hit LIKE & SUBSCRIBE! Drop a comment-have you been to Aveiro or Costa Nova? Would you try Ovos Moles? Let’s chat! 💬✨

    What about taxes? They had a great income tax program (straight 10% for 10 years) for retirees and digital nomads but killed it at the end of 2023. Now, we're stuck with the standard income tax program, and that looked cost prohibitive. Also, it seems the Algarve is getting congested and more expensive. Same for the cities on the eastern coast. The interior has difficult terrain, so it's remote, except perhaps in some places in the north. But that's colder and rainier. But the big problem for a retiree is the taxes. I'm forgetting the specifics, but am I wrong? We seem to be stuck with a nomadic plan, going from country to country after 90 or 180 days, depending on their limit for staying without a visa. Too many places seem too politically unstable, and the taxes must be considered, so. Maybe that will lead us to identify a place we can settle down. We'll see.

      We put lifestyle over taxes, if truth be told but I totally understand your point. I don’t think the perfect country exists in this regards, but have you looked at Cyprus?

    • @izzytoons

      @@changeofplan1 Yes. A little tricky because we are traveling with two small dogs. Smh! :) As I recall the ferry situation is prohibitive. Though we are starting to warm very slowly to the notion of air travel (beyond the one big trick of getting from the intermountain west to western europe. After that we planned to stay in walkable cities with decent public transportation and then rent a car to drive to the next destination. One hurdle we have is finding housing with dogs. 95% of 3-6 month rentals do not allow them. The remaining small number of options is problematice. Either too expensive ($4k or more) or lacking certain basics for this kind of living, such as being furnished, lacking a kitchen, a washer (or nearby laundromat), a stovr & oven, sofa and bed that look reasonably comfortable, and climate control appropriate for the location and season. Once you factor all that in, housing can be tricky, and often in the $3-$4K area, more expensive than our 4,000 sq ft home here. In most cases, for a 1 bedroom apartment. And not necessarily in/around the major tourist/ExPat cities, where fewer people speak English. It's a conundrum. But we are definitely going. Probably starting with an English-speaking country. Get used to the mechanics of living out of three suitcases, two backpacks, and the dogs in carriers in the cabin (on the airplane) or in a country, traveling between countries. We are retired, so the taxes are an issue. We need to cover expenses and we want to live comfortably and continue to save and grow the nest egg. Due to genetics, my wife is likely to live another 35-40 years. Who knows what will happen to the economics of the middle class during that timespan? And we want to leave a substantial sum to our two daughters and their partners. Throw in the political instability everywhere, and it's kind of daunting. Hence, nomads, at least until there is greater stability, at least in Europe.

    We Portuguese also complain about bureaucracy, but believe me, there are worse options, and I'll give you two examples: in Portugal, signing up for Via Verde, an automatic payment method on highways, takes a maximum of a week, even for foreigners. In France, in addition to having to leave a deposit, it took 2 months. In Italy, where we spend a month every year, it was impossible to obtain it, because the Italian tax number has 15 digits and ours has 9. The system does not accept anything less or more than 15. We got around this obstacle by extending it from France to Italy. Not to mention booking visits to exhibitions and museums online, something that in Portugal can be done at an ATM. Regarding the treatment given to animals, nowadays most people adopt abandoned dogs or cats, giving them living conditions that are often better than those of their caregivers. I pay 40%, but our infrastructures work, no one goes untreated, even undocumented foreigners, at the door of a Health Center or Hospital, our National Health System is free for everyone and is very good, schooling is free and there are social supports that make us have a much lower rate of Homeless People, and a much higher life expectancy than for exemple in the USA.

    • @changeofplan1

    You had me until the comparison. The Portugal price has no housing costs, but the UK one has a £2000+ mortgage. If you subtract that, the difference is only a few hundred £’s. Granted, quality of life is likely better and it’s still a sum of money, but it’s much closer than you portray saying “OMG WHAT A HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!”

    • @changeofplan1
      @changeofplan1 День тому

      As we say in the video, most of our normal costs are comparable to Lisbon and such like. For example, you don’t pay more for electricity in those areas. If you shop the big supermarket chains prices will be the same. But eating out and small grocery stores will be more expensive in Lisbon, but you would probably spend less on transport costs as we run a car and our fuel costs are high. Food prices - we were about 30 miles from London, prices are higher there for sure

    I live in the US and will be retiring in the next few years. As things get more and more insane in this country I am thinking very seriously of retiring in Portugal and putting all of that behind me for some peace and happiness in my later years. In truth even our medicare insurance for seniors which is supposed to be a real benefit ( only covers 80% ) the monthly premium is almost $200 a month so anywhere else is pretty much cheaper and compared to the actual charges for medical care in this country there really is no comparison. Sounds like everything else is on much, much cheaper as well. It would be so wonderful to live there a be able to jump on a cheap flight to almost anywhere in Europe for a few days adventure on a whim. I would love it.

    Hello again, another question, I see that one of you has an EU passport and I assume the other just has a British passport? My wife and I both hold British passports but I also hold a Dutch EU passport. I have received mixed recommendations on whether my British wife should join me via a family reunification visa or whether she should get a D7 visa in her own right. Which way have you gone for and if you have gone the reunification route how long did it take and was it difficult? Thanks Ned.

    • @changeofplan1
      @changeofplan1 2 дні тому

      @@Nedmyers Hi Ned. Yes Gary has a British Passport and we went down the reunification route. It wasn’t easy! This was due to AIMA being in such a mess and getting an appointment was tough. I think either way you are at the mercy of AIMA. For you as the EU passport holder the process is so much easier, just make sure you have no travel plans and be prepared to wait. Your wife won’t be marked as an overstayer if she stays longer than 3 months as the border team know the issue, just make sure if you do travel you do so together. Good luck!

      @changeofplan1 Thanks for the reply and advice. Yes, I've heard that the process can be long via the reunification route and AIME is allocating fewer appointments for family reunification. Really enjoyed hearing your story. Sometimes the UA-cam algorithm brings up a gem, glad I “stumbled” upon your channel. You both are such polished presenters and I look forward to watching your journey unfold. 👏

    In 2022 when we tallied the bill to import our 2021 BMW from the USA to Lisbon it was near enough twenty thousand dollars. And that was only an estimate . And it was going to take a minimum of 9 months. Trying to get an agent set up and find someone to do all the paperwork was a bridge too far . Everything is email or text , people weren’t responsive and the few cowboys who did wanted big down payments now. We don’t even know if they’re legitimate companies. We still needed a vehicle for the first year and no one in their right mind is renting us a car past 90 days. We ended up buying an almost new Mini for under 30 thousand . People from the uk have to change their headlights and taillights . Have you priced a headlamp for anything past 2017 especially if it’s LED or even Xenon ? My friend from England in Faro told me he’s been struggling for 2 years to register his car .

      We had no issue - my car was 2012 - I had to get the headlights done and fog light changed over it cost about €2000 in total so worth it. But yes with all things Portugal, you have to be careful who you use!

    Great video. Your back story resonated. Very similar to ours, but it was Brexit that expedited our plans, we wanted to get over before that all made moving more difficult. We have spent a fair bit of time near Mortagua and Santa Comba Dão. It was lovely, but there was too much eucalyptus for us. Covid affected us a lot too, as we were selling our house during the pandemic and took a hit on our sale price. But OMG we love it now and know we made the right decision!
