HOW to be Great at Savate WITHOUT good Flexibility.
Flexibility is one of the most important athletic attributes in martial arts. Along with strength, cardio, these are the building blocks of the athletic sides to fighting. Savate Boxe Francaise is well known for its diverse kicking arsenal, many of which require considerable flexibility to do with ease. That doesn't mean that if you're inflexible you're doomed to never be good at the art. Savate has a wonderful utilitarian base from which you can pull, the footwork, low and midline kicks, in combination with its boxing give you virtually all the tools you need to be a skilled striker. So do not despair, even if your flexibility is poor you can still be great in the art.

Countering the Kick Check. Feints, Trips and More.

Techniques like the kick check initially radiated from specific martial arts but as more overlap becomes standard we see it even arising in recent Savate rules. Just as well adding further variations and layers to your defensive skills will only serve to make you less predictable, making it easier to draw out strikes and capitalize on counters. Hello sir, I'm a teenager who's been doing calisthenics plus weightlifting for 3 years now though I mainly did bodyweight exercises for the first 1 year and 6 months what martial art would you recommend that I train in with the goal of attaining average combat capabilities for self-defense and for the sake of knowing how to fight in mind.

      That's a tough question with a lot of possible answers. I cant really speak for what's around you so I'd simply advise you take the time and go over your options available near you. Only you can find out which are truly good or not. Simple advice would be find schools that practice proper pressure testing and sparring. The environment itself and the community in that school is the other big piece of the puzzle. I wish you luck.

    In Ukraine, Savat is not so well developed and popular. But I'm trying to practice on my own. I'll tell you that both boxing technique and leg technique are terribly dependent on technique. It seems to be like kickboxing is not complicated and meticulous as savate

      Savate is definitely very strict in its technical training. It's one of the things that I really loved about it when I started learning it. I've practiced Savate for about 2,5 - 3 years back in High-school in Croatia. Not once did we practice with proper Savate shoes. Most of what we could find/afford were regular sports shoes or wrestling shoes. We were always taught to hit with the part of the foot that's closest to the ankle when, for example, throwing a kick from the side (I forgot the names of the kicks). The only problem I remember having when doing practice barefooted was throwing that middle kick to the side and having the opponent block with his elbow...that hurt, but not nearly as much as hitting an elbow with your shin 😅

    Great video... Out of curiosity I know this is not savate related but on checking kicks.... In MMA and savate are leg destructions permitted? Instead of using your leg use a Filipino knee destruction? Is that legal? I think it might be unsportsmanlike but I'm just wondering is that legal?

    • @Dr-Grayson
      @Dr-Grayson Місяць тому

      So yes I know exactly the kind of techniques you're talking about in regards to the various gunting's of the Filipino Art along with the kick catches and elbow destructions. As far as I'm aware in MMA it's completely legal, the only thing barred there is small joint manipulation or grabbing the collar bone, which most destructions don't fall under. Essentially you can't grab fingers or toes but other than that you can do a lot of joint damage. In terms of flat out Savate anything involving grabbing legs or catching kicks while destructing would be illegal. There's also the fact that between the footwear and the shin pads that are part of standard uniform help prevent a lot of those injuries. More likely to see a forearm broken from a fouette or a leg hyperextension off a kick, given the additional safety gear it would be challenging to make them very effective. In MMA though it's totally legal I just don't think it's a high enough success rate to be consider worth doing, that and most competitors don't want to break bones in a fight. Just can't grab small digits and the like in MMA.

    The gym which is teaching savate professionally isn't be in my country. And fortunately i found this youtube channal. Therefore i have something wondering related to savate. I heard itf taekwondo has sine wave principle and muay thai has triangle movement. Is symbolic principal is similar to fencing in savate?

    • @Dr-Grayson
      @Dr-Grayson Місяць тому

      I would say there isn't a ton of correlation between fencing and Savate. Fencing is very linear while the focus in BFS is generally on lateral movement and angles. Savate is based heavily in its outside and inside steps, which are kinds of lateral footwork. While the formal names for some of Savate's foundational offensive/defensive footwork are Decalage and Debordement. If you want a great indepth look on those two steps I would highly suggest checking out ua-cam.com/video/elC34_a82MA/v-deo.html this video by Prof James Southwood, he has others besides that go into great detail.

    How do you make them fall in the ground

    • @Dr-Grayson
      @Dr-Grayson Місяць тому

      Some of it comes down to timing. One good way to to time the sweep off a step in. Such as kicking out the front leg when they step in to Jab. Another is doubling up the sweep, for instance after using the lead leg sweep you shift to the rear to take the leg completely out from under them. It's mostly going to come down to timing if you want them to hit the mat. Otherwise it's about breaking the balance and using the sweep to see up additional strikes. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
