You have produced a long list of details I had not heard after many, many accounts of this legend. Never have I heard any involvement of that "cave" into the tale.

I do not dismiss Kate Batts from this too readily. The tale takes on more of the movie plot from "Pumpkinhead" as far as the haunting is concerned. I also think Betsy is a derivative nickname to Elizabeth. Like Jack is to John or Dick to Richard. The changing source of the spirit is bothersome. A great spooky tale though.
