J. Malats | Serenata Española arr. acoustic guitars & bass guitar
Joaquin Malats Serenata Española from his Impressions of Spain arr. 4 acoustic guitars & bass guitar Individual instrument parts are appended to the full sheet music score in the pdf download. #sheetmusic & accompaniments download link:plentymusic.co.uk/short/?c=71jFPhG

A sunny piece that features many characteristics typical of Spanish music. There is no reason why the parts cannot be doubled to make this an exciting ensemble piece. There are many times of guitar that can be incorporated into a playing group making this a great learning piece for so many guitarists. Whatever guitar types are available can be used & there is no reason why a mix of guitars cannot be used with classical, folk, steel, and electric guitars being substituted. As a concert piece classical guitars supported by either an acoustic or electric bass instrument would be ideal;.
Accompaniments are in place enabling the guitar 1 part to practice as part of an ensemble. They play at 104, 108,112,116 & 120 bpm. Ther is a 4 bar click track to prepare players for this ensemble experience.
All instruments playing in this arrangement create the sound by plucking the strings. In this arrangement the long trill in the guitar 1 has been omitted simply because a long trill is hard to sustain on an acoustic instrument.
Remember that the classical guitar and bass guitar are transposing instruments sounding an octave lower than written in the music score.
The workability of this arrangement does need to be evaluated and PlentyMusic would value feedback from musicians trying out this arrangement. It is possible that there are better octave options in the parts that could be explored particularly the guitar 2 & 3 parts. Where there are challenges with stretches in the guitar parts with more than one note being played the instrumentalist needs to chose or be advised on the most appropriate option.
animando used in the score implies an increase in tempo and has been placed above the stave as a score marking
The music in this arrangement has been transposed from the key of G minor to A minor.
The origins of this piece are as a piano solo although there are many arrangements to be discovered for different instrument combinations. Interestingly, much of the Spanish piano repertoire of the 19th and early 20th centuries is more familiar transcribed to being played on the guitar and this is certainly the case with the Serenata.
This is a movement that dates from the late romantic era when nationalism became an identified as an important trend in composition. The music of composers from countries on the fringes of Europe were appearing in concert programmes including music of Dvorak, Smetana, Grieg, Granados & Albeniz amongst others.
Playing the scale in the sounding key of A in all its forms would be excellent preparation for playing this work major, harmonic & melodic minor and the phrygian mode.
In this movement many of characteristic musical sounds of Spain are captured in a score that suggests many images of the country. There is also much figuration and decoration used in Spanish music and these feature in the melodic, accompaniment, harmonic & timbral detail.
This movement music was composed and published in the last decade of the 19th century.
There were some ambiguities in the source scores available to the music editor who has spent time removing most errors and inconsistencies.
It is the phyrgian mode that is features strongly in Spanish music. The structure of the phyrgian scale is S/T-T-T-T-S/T-T-T (S/T = semitone T = tone)
Modal shifts from minor to major also feature
The realisation plays back at a tempo of 116 quarter note or crotchet beats to the minute although there are occasionally speeding ups (marked animando in the score) and slowing downs particularly at the end of phrases.
Formally the music has a sectional structure and can be described as being in ABA ternary form. (AABB’A)
Spanish music is often dramatic and on occasions invites exaggeration in performance.
The extensive melodic range is a particular characteristic of this movement and instrument ranges are often challenging.

Hi! I see you shadow-banned my last comment. Why do you escape the (documented) Truth? Can't you handle it? Does Truth invalidate your business? Does Truth stop you from making money by exploiting people's ignorance? Show me that you are a real man and not a pitiful maggot: I challenge you to counter my theses, in a dialogic form. Otherwise, take notes of my words: I'll remember of you, when I'll open my personal UA-cam channel. So I can debunk publicly - having historical sources at my hand - all your bullshits in front of the entire World. Be sure I'll name your channel. No one messes with me.
As I said last time, I wonder why you reproduce all these novelty solos so unbearably slow to the point they resemble just meaningless children exercises... If you really "want to make the difference in the World" - words of yours - you should present all these works as they were actually played in the Novelty Era. Here's a rendition of "Polly" as masterfully played by J. Milton Delcamp: ua-cam.com/video/SaaYciXdNco/v-deo.html. About "Nola", instead... it didn't sound "modern" at all, in 1915. Audiences had been accustomed to far more "futuristic" works since the last quarter of 19th century - this clearly demonstrates some huge ignorance about Western Music repertoire, from you. "Nola", beyond its incalculable commercial success, is just a typical Neo-Romantic solo reworked in a more up-to-date, easy-listening, dance-like fashion: a new kind of parlour music subservient to the needs of Capitalism and night-clubs. In fact, although the Novelty genre can boast a large number of masterpieces of absolute and indisputable artistic value, the majority of these compositions were mere industrial products, assembled by just juxtaposing scales and breaks. You also said: "Novelty piano music has a strong connection with ragtime particularly in its formal patterns and shapes". That's not wrong. But it's not true at the same time. Sometimes, the characteristics of the two musical genres seem to overlap - without ever coinciding, however. But they're not as practically similar as they may appear theoretically. So it is much easier to provide auditory examples for comparison, rather than long textual treatments. However, it is possible to trace at least two unequivocal points of divergence, between Rag-Time and Novelty: their reference musical sources; and their different harmonical texture. Although both Rag-Time and Novelty dip their feet in the waters of Western classical music, Rag-Time - instead of Novelty - is a total African-American creation. Rag-Time brings together, within itself, the entire history of Black America, from the days of slavery to Emancipation; from the Drum to the Pianoforte. So the roots of Rag-Time are primarly to be found in the traditional West African chants and rhythms; and then in the old religious and secular European musical forms. So, within the Rag-Time idiom, there's the Jig, the Polka, the Schottische, the Quadrille, the March etc. all mixed together. Novelty, instead, has been created by Whites; its roots are to be found in pianola arrangements, European avant-garde movements, conservatories and in the district of Tin Pan Alley. The Novelty genre equally draws from the most diverse inspirations (especially Late-Romantic repertoire and popular songs), but appears formally and content-wise MUCH more consistent and less varied than Rag-Time (of which countless regional forms can instead be distinguished), since it's (generally, but not necessarly) Jazz-oriented. The natural evolution of Rag-Time is not Novelty Piano, but the Harlem-style Rag-Time (the one vulgarly known as "Stride Piano", although it is not a historically attested name). The connection between Rag-Time and Novelty Piano was only made by academics in the 1960s - incorrectly. But there is NO document from before the WW2 (in the U.S.A., Europe and Soviet Republic) that describes Novelty as "a kind of Rag-Time": because they're very different genres of Music and they were historically perceived as very different ones. Also, Rag-Time is primarly dance music, while Novelty is primarly listening music - and a skill test for any pianist. This is clearly evident by the compositional writing: Rag-Time is formally square, while Novelty is freer. And, because of this same freeness, Novelty tempo is WAY more higher than the one of Rag-Time. Novelty Piano has been summarised by the broadcaster Christopher Stone, in 1932, as "the maximum of notes in the minimum of time".
Thank you for your comments. I am interested in making sheet music copies available for people to play. Pianos in in the early 1900's had quite light touches and you are correct that most novelty music does need to be played as fast as possible. Nola I think is an interesting piece for 1915 in that it is played in a swing style and notated in the conventional wisdom of the time. perhaps a 12/8 version would look better on the page?

This is "Nola" as played by the composer himself: ua-cam.com/video/Ho8_Tlf-EF4/v-deo.html. And this is another wonderful rendition by Paul Whiteman & His Orchestra (Roy Bargy at the Piano, one of the Novelty genre pioneers): ua-cam.com/video/-gKms9FYiqk/v-deo.html. In any case, "Nola" didn't sound "modern" at all, in 1915. Audiences had been accustomed to far more "futuristic" works since the last quarter of 19th century. В девятом такте должна быть доминанта - A7
great video, thanks!
Glad you liked it!
I fucking hate solo ensamble
Is it really an arrangement when you just take a keyboard score and write "clarinet in Bb" at the top staff and "Bass clarinet" at the bottom staff?
The keyboard score is the starting point but quite often the voicing has been to be changed for the instrument in the arrangement.
When do they take a breath?
Bach is fairly uncompromising music to play.
Excelente.
