      @OlympiaPiano 28 днів тому

      Thank you so much for your support both of my channel and of me as a composer! Wow--so grateful (I just finished the recordings of the Jazz Nocturnes which will be on streaming services soon). With regards to editions, I would suggest investing in something good--either Henle, Paderewski, or the recent Chopin National Edition edited by Jan Ekier and Pawel Kaminski (which my friends tell me are great). As you know by now I always suggest that you try several fingerings to see which works for your hand, and still makes all of the articulation markings possible. Best wishes and thanks again-Jennifer

      @@HusadMarak-ho3hn I am not sure of my favorite but there are lots of great recordings by famous artists and artists that may not be that well-known. Thank you so much for this series of videos. I came across it to confirm my fingering in measure 52, and learned much in the meantime, including what was going on with the bracketed A flat/natural in measure 13. I'd like to move on to 27 no. 1. Any thoughts on how much more difficult it would be? Thanks again for all your hard work on this page. (Writing from just north of you in Federal Way, WA.)

    • @OlympiaPiano
      @OlympiaPiano Місяць тому

      Thank you for subscribing and taking the time to comment. Federal Way is beautiful BTW. With regards to Op. 27, No. 1 it is difficult in a different way: 1) managing the volume of the LH while having the RH tone soar above but in a soft way and 2) the middle section is hard to get accurate so approach it slowly and 3) just be really careful of the rhythm in the middle part it can be tricky. So I guess degree of difficulty depends on what your strengths are. I find No. 2 to be much more difficult, but my strength is not all the filigree stuff so that's why, the middle of No. 1 is more athletic and that is more my strength as a player--hope that helps Jennifer

    If it's not too much of a bother, may I ask your opinion on this, in what order would u have someone learn the following - the F minor nocturne, the C# minor one and this waltz. most will say that this waltz one grade higher than the other two, is it about the pretty fast tempo of this waltz? structure doesn't seem harder than nocturnes

      No problem. Thank you for subscribing BTW. I usually take a look at the royal conservatory syllabus if I am looking to get a general idea of "grades" or someone is doing the testing. rcmusic-kentico-cdn.s3.amazonaws.com/rcm/media/main/about%20us/rcm%20publishing/piano-syllabus-2022-edition.pdf On page 82 you will see that all 3 of the pieces you mentioned are in the same grade (9). I think the order of what you learn should be based on what you are interested in working on. C# minor nocturne--light LH touch, singing Right Hand, nuance, pacing. F minor nocturne--lots of sections some fast, some slow, lots of LH jumping that needs control, fast passages that are awkward, C# minor waltz--very famous, fingering and fast notes are difficult, trills can be tricky, lots of little articulation things as well. They are all amazing pieces. So good luck and let me know what you decide!

      @@OlympiaPiano thank you for such a detailed reply. I'm stealing this pdf ) very helpful 😀 since there's no rush and this is my hobby I'll ease myself into Chopin's music by starting with b150 waltz in A minor Which is grade 6. I can work on my rubato with this " easier " waltz. I think personally the C Sharp minor nocturne will give me less of a panic) the last 4 scales might be the hardest part there. The F minor one and the other waltzes are more awkward with fingering or too fast or all of the above like you said before. Saving them for later for sure.

      @@OlympiaPiano, thank you, Ma'am. At around 0:42 seconds in (the first exercise of group one). "...explore how your fingers and wrists are working together as the notes change." I am genuinely curious.

    • @OlympiaPiano
      @OlympiaPiano Місяць тому

      I see--when you incorporate your wrist, you are incorporating arm weight into the notes, and developing a sense of which motion creates which type of tone (not just pressing the keys--it is more connected). This bouncing or rolling the wrist is very useful for playing with a full tone. As you get more versatile on piano, you will use different sorts of touches to create different types of sounds and moods and you can start developing that skill in these seemingly simple exercises. Hope this answers your question.

    Hi Jennifer - I've really enjoyed this series and will be working on it for a few more months. I'm in Glasgow, Scotland. I had piano lessons when I was about 12 - some 40 years ago. Since then I've not played much piano - I have done a lot of playing jazz - guitar and sax though. I started looking at piano again last year - I've been working on Chopin's Nocturne Op9No2 and can do about 3/4 of it - I wanted to start a new one before I finished it so I'd have something underway - if that makes sense - so I started on the Nocturne in C# Minor - and found your 30 day series. I like the way you start with a harmonic analysis - I'm used to looking at a lead sheet with chord symbols and then figuring out what scales I'm going to use to improvise over it. While I've been doing the Op9No2 one I was doing that - I found it easier to memorize if I could remember the chord progression. The 3/4 section in the C# Minor one is unusual - I like it - but it's kind of unexpected - I don't know how you'd describe it. I've heard some versions where it's played almost with a flamenco like flourish. I don't know if Chopin was thinking of that. I read that in Op9No2 Chopin wanted the left hand to sound like a “like a chorus of guitars” but I can't really hear anything I would consider guitarlike about that.

      Thank you for sharing your story. My sister went to Glasgow last year and is ready to move to Scotland! I have not made it yet, though I am going to UK for the first time in a couple of weeks. Great that you did so much jazz. Chopin certainly used several interesting chords and I do my best to get them "right" in the analyses. The tricky thing about OP 9 no 2 is trying to remember which inversion the chords are on even though it tends to be the same progression. As for chorus of guitars, I have never heard that one. Wow. I can say one of the trickiest things about Op 9 No 2 is playing the last chord on the group of 3 softly as you move back down for the bass - so maybe he was referring to the bass note being more prominent and the chords being lighter. And yes the 3/4 in the C#m is tricky. (pacing, keeping soft, etc.). Let me know how it goes for you!

      @@OlympiaPiano I'm self-taught. Been playing for a year now. It's highly likely my technique is appalling, which is why i struggle to get up and down the keyboard at speed without hitting the wrong notes. I notice when you play that scale, your hand is almost tilted a little to the right, and then pivots a little to the left as you come down. Are you using your wrist? When I play, I am flat on, as in , always directly above the keyboard. Perhaps this is why I find it hard. It's like your hand is an agile spider quickly scurrying up the keyboard, and mine is a flat footed gorilla. If you see what I mean!

    • @mabdub
      @mabdub Місяць тому

      @@OlympiaPiano The Chopin Prelude and Schubert Scherzo are both worth considering but I think the Tchaikovsky piece, although very beautiful, tends not to appeal to a wider audience. The Bach Arioso from the GB Variations seems to tug at people's hearts. Perhaps a Chopin Waltz would be suitable, one that isn't a concert waltz such as Op 69 No 2 or No 1. You might also consider presenting another Chopin Nocturne. The Op.9 No 2 is played very badly by a great many people who might benefit from learning how to play it properly, either from scratch or as a project for people who would like to refine their interpretation. The Op 9 No 1 is also worthy candidate for many of the same reasons. A playable movement from a Mozart Sonata might be a consideration too; I'm thinking of the Sonata in G, K 283. You could go out on a limb and present the Adagio from the Pathetique. Many people find Debussy's Reverie interesting as well, it is beautiful, playable and it isn't a walk in the park. Good luck, glad I don't have to chose.

    • @OlympiaPiano
      @OlympiaPiano Місяць тому

      I think you are right about the Tchaikovsky. I was thinking of a Mozart as well, but F major KV 332. Hmm. Well I will figure it out. Reverie is a good idea, that one is pretty hard though (not that the others aren't) JB

    • @mabdub
      @mabdub Місяць тому

      @@OlympiaPiano The KV 332 is a good choice. Given that your tutorial does not require playing at top speed and your focus is simply developing an understanding of the details in two measures per day I think your range of choices is actually quite broad. In your last presentation you gave people options of how to understand and execute ornaments and scales in the Nocturne before you showed people how to play the piece and as long as you adhere to that formula you should be able to present just about any piece of music. You are not preparing people for exams you are enlightening them so they can learn to play the music sooner or later. You might consider recommending a half dozen or so pieces and asking your viewers which one they would be most interested in learning or ask your viewers to suggest names of pieces that they would like you to present.
