Robert St. Clair - Cygne of the Times: Baudelaire and the Cut of Modernité
Few terms, especially associated with this particular proper name, are likely to strike us as so tautologically self-evident, as calling for less circumspection than these two: Baudelaire and modernity. What do we mean, “Baudelaire’s modernity”? Would this not simply be a periodicity (say, the Second Empire), or an aesthetic (say, the poem in prose)? Following the trace of the signifier through its elaboration in Baudelaire’s aesthetic essays and verse poetry, however, what emerges takes the form of a catachresis: la modernité functions for Baudelaire as the name (à défaut d’être un concept) for a direct, if stressed, relationship between art and the material - or matter - of history and as the site of a critically oppositional poetic politics which insists on the unsettledness of the present, its open-ended contingency. It is a name for History as the cut, or césure, of Revolution. Une histoire qui fait mal.

Miriam Leonard - Genres of Revolution

Hegel remarks somewhere that all great world-historic facts and personages appear, so to speak, twice. He forgot to add: the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce.” This is how Karl Marx opens his searing analysis of the failure of the 1848 revolution. In this paper, I will explore how the experience of revolution has consistently been troped in dramatic terms. In particular, the chap...
Joseph Vogl - Capitalism and Ressentiment. The Case of Brexit

The title of the talk, “Capitalism and Ressentiment”, puts the copula “and” under a critical strain, interrogating the coherence of their conjunction. The thesis it puts forward, namely, that affective states represent a central factor in the constitution of economic or, more precisely, capitalist power, calls to mind a number of theoretical and historical approaches, which will be outlined in ...

David Wills - Spoonful

'Spoonful: the Dorsal Deconstruction of Eroticism' works with Derrida's quasi-transcendental 'auto-affection' to think through a series of ideas relating to eroticism, in particular in terms of what I have elsewhere called 'dorsality'. The figure for my discussion is the type of physical embrace (of front to back) that Americans call 'spooning', and it is analyzed through the reading of a fragm...
Illness as Philosophical Method
Переглядів 135Рік тому
The phenomenological method (or rather, methods) has been fruitfully used to study the experience of illness in recent years. However, the role of illness is not merely that of a passive object for phenomenological scrutiny. I propose that illness, and pathology more generally, can be developed into a phenomenological method in their own right. I claim that studying cases of pathology, breakdow...

Hontology, hontologie, is a pun proposed by Lacan, combining ‘ontology’ and la honte, shame in French. With ‘h’ being mute in French, the two words sound exactly alike (not to be confused with hauntology, hantologie, another pun proposed by Derrida in a similar vein, albeit with different ramifications). The pun was proposed in the last session of Lacan’s seminar The other side of psychoanalysi...
