The PlayStation 2: All About Emotion
In 1994 Sony launched the first in a long lineup on Home Video Game Consoles titled the PlayStation to resounding success. Consumers, developers, publishers, media, and the world decided the PlayStation should be a household name.
Fast forward 5 years to 1999, with the next generation of consoles hitting homes with the Dreamcast, Sony was finally ready to unveil their brand new device, once that would hold Emotion in the center of it's DNA.
The PlayStation 2 is quite possibly the most influential console ever, and was the most culturally significant video game machine at the turn of the millennia.
Today on VideoGameDocs we go through the history of the PlayStation 2.

Luigi’s Mansion. Officially shown off at Spaceworld 2000, was shown with many other games as In Development titles for Nintendo’s newest console: The GameCube. The game featured Luigi, starring in his own solo adventure. While it wasn’t Luigi’s first go at being the protagonist, it is certainly his most memorable. The story? Luigi must go through a haunted mansion filled with nasty ghouls and g...

The Dreamcast was fantastic, I loved it so much. I played the hell out of that demo disc. I cant remember when I first got it exactly, I feel like I got it in 2000 when I was about 9/10. I do however remember the $200 price tag being expensive for my mom, and then remember it dropping to $100 not long after. She was not too happy about that part.😅

Finally Nintendo started to get a reality check and be paid back for their mistreatment of 3rd parties for the previous two generations, it's no wonder they had iwata become president soon after given the relationship yamauchi had with developers, they had to have someone who you know is likeable.

Aw the GC. Crazy optimized little lunchbox just for Nintendo as always. Only thing I truly technically dislike about it is how little fast RAM it has and the “narrow” SIMD capabilities of the PPC750 CPU. The CPU SIMD capabilities never seemed to hold it back against the PS2 or Xbox though…….

People hate this game because they say there’s too much stuff, but back when I was 4-5 years old playing n64 that was a great thing. You wanted as much possible in every single game. This, ocarina of time, banjo kazooie, Mario 64, all of them were like entire worlds to me as a kid. And with no internet and only access to game guides from friends at school, you spent hours just exploring these games thinking there was more than there really was in them. Obviously had no understanding of the limitations of game development and what consoles could produce feasibly at the time, so friends and I would spend hours trying to find secret places / characters and sharing what we found / didn’t find. Plenty of exaggeration or misunderstandings provided even more hours of trial and error testing what we each said or misexplained. It was a different time back then. I didn’t beat this game until I was in my teens so that says it all right there. There was always more for me to find / do and that provided me with years of entertainment and nostalgia for this game and others like it from that era. Game developers really tried to pack games back then before everything was explicitly about milking every game for as much money as you can possibly make. Yes, the market is extremely different now, and the budget for some games is on par with movies in terms of production, so that profit is key to companies surviving to keep making games, but besides the quality of how they look / feel, the actual substance in a lot of newer games is lacking cause they know they can put out half finished shot and add more later. Back then this would absolutely tank a game if it had bugs or lacked content. It’s as if complaining about games like dk64 indirectly allowed a subconscious acceptance from the masses that games have less now and we don’t complain we just waste our money and hope they add more later if people like it enough

A few things would have to change to have Sega still making consoles today. 1) SoA and SoJ would have to get along. 2) 32x would have to be cancelled. 3) Saturn would be released on release day in America, not the surprise release. 4) A sonic game would need to be a launch title for the Saturn, at least in the west. 5) Bernie Stolar not make his "Saturn isn't the future" comment. The first item is the most important, as without it, the others wouldnt be on the table.

I bought the GameCube at launch(I'm 50 today so I was already a working adult at the time) and it was a real internal struggle for me whether to buy the GameCube or Xbox, but in the end I did not regret my decision because I loved that little cube! Even the launch games I was really impressed by and just the overall design and feel of the device, down to the elegant splash screen loading. It's a beautiful console and even though I also had a PS2, whenever there was a GameCube version of a 3rd party title I was interested in(like a Prince of Persia game or Beyond Good and Evil), I always opted to buy the GC version of it just for the cool factor of playing it on that device instead.

I’m a lifelong Nintendo fan (though I play many consoles an handhelds) and to me the PS2 was the most flawless console in history. It is what comes to mind when I think of a game console and I think Sony nailed the design on all variants. I wish they would go back to the simple and functional console shape and form of the PS2 and PS2 slim.

Dreamcast was a great system that was held back by its awful controller but it was dead on arrival thanks to the failure of the Saturn and the PS2 came with the purity of oblivion to the Dreamcast.
