Very insightful interview! 💡
Thank you so much
Any special considerations when using the nucleus m with the mini lf? Special adapters, cabling? 🤙🏽
Sound like Phase 1 IQ4 achromatic 4cmX5cm sensor.
Thank you for this❤
Absolute pleasure!
No Joe Swanberg mention?
Love this interview - as far as cinematogrpahy insight around episode 6 one thing I noticed that episode was doing - and that highlighted what I only just noticed the show hadn't been doing - was much more closeups on the characters during the dialogue scenes specifically. The camera was framing them closer and closer when they were shooting back and forth. I didn't know I was missing it until the scene where Joel wakes up in the morning and the camera is right on him in his talk with ellie. Overall much closer and intimate framing during their conversations and this continues through the episode. It's kind of hard to explain but it felt like someone splashed my face with delicious cold water when they did it. The camera always kept its distance from them during these scenes in earlier episodes so seeing it change felt soooo good and really changed the feeling of the relationship between Joel and ellie.
Thank you so much for your insightful comment! I'm glad you enjoyed the interview and noticed the changes in cinematography in episode 6 of the show. It's fascinating how a simple adjustment in framing can have a significant impact on the viewer's experience. The decision to use closer and more intimate framing during the dialogue scenes in episode 6 was a deliberate choice made by the cinematographer and director. By bringing the camera closer to the characters, they were able to create a sense of intimacy and emotional connection between Joel and Ellie. It allows the audience to feel more immersed in their conversation and enhances the overall impact of their relationship. It's wonderful to hear that this change in framing had such a powerful effect on you. Moments like these, when a subtle cinematographic choice can evoke strong emotions and enhance storytelling, are what make filmmaking such a captivating art form.
I enjoy these type of insights, very helpful.
Is it used often within a constructed narrative made to appear as truth? I have heard people describe it as just "truth in cinema" and that seems...incorrect?
Hi there. Thank you for the comment. Within today's cinema landscape the techniques used to achieve the stylistic approach we call Cinema Verite is completely integrated in modern filmmaking. 🎬 In regards to "truth". The purpose of these techniques were to make the viewer feel present as a participant in the story, as if they are witnesses. This is why it has roots in reconstructions in documentaries. Ultimately, even with these approaches a film is still "made" by people or a person who have a subjective view on the subject, even when they try to be as objective as possible this bias finds its way into the construction of the media. Etc etc. 😪 Hard to fit everything into a youtube short. 😂🤣😹
@@WildShadowsZA Thank you!! Actually you did a better job in a few seconds than the two 10 minute long dissections of Cinema Veritae I watched. They seemed to not even know themselves! You've helped me a lot. My confusion started when Werner Herzog said he "hated" cinema veritae but then totally (imo) partakes in the practice, as opposed to direct cinema. I think this must be one of the most incorrectly used terms in all of filmmaking from the way people throw it around without tying it to their "definition"! Even the Film school article I read seemed lost haha😅
Thats a great compliment. Im here to help. My suspicion is that Werner Herzog's objection was actually more about being grouped in with his contemporaries who pioneered the style of Cinema Verite. He wanted to stand apart, but still not miss out of the advantages and opportunities new technologies brought to the medium. These technologies then enabled the style to emerge.
the 44x33 sensor you include in this comparison is still smaller than the sensor in the H6D which is 53.4X40. I know this is just a little marginally bigger but still makes a difference in the final outcome.
Agreed
Noticeable difference? Why they make it smaller?
I feel like the bmpcc6k is a better choice at this price but this fx30 is very interesting
There is a place in the market for both, no doubt. Having shot on both I must say I prefer the FX30.
@@WildShadowsZA May I ask why? I'm definitely considering the FX30, so I'm curious about your reasoning. It's definitely the more convenient pick!
@@botbot3698 The BMPCC is a great option, but I find it to be an awkward camera to operate and not entirely reliable. Both with the battery life and the camera's OS. The FX30 has the bit depth I need and a much nicer to camera to operate, even when shooting solo. The reliability is a big deal to me.
You always be dropping such fascinating knowledge! I especially liked that they were used as a work-around for possible safety issues amongst its uses for technical issue problem solving with light
She’s a superstar and has zero ego.
This is such a nice camera but I'm worried about the grain, even on the launch trailer for the fx30 it had grain in some parts of it and I'll definitly be shooting a lot in lowlight
I wouldn't be worried. I believe the trick is understanding how the FX30 specifically performs at certain ISO levels. The low-light performace is best in class.
@@WildShadowsZA but the fx 3 tho 👀
@@Orangeme I agree but at double the price.
@@WildShadowsZA but 12800 second base iso 👀
Great points! My favorite 'criticism' of the FX 30 were the UA-camrs who dismissed it immediately because it was 'only' Super35 - clearly intended for amateurs only - just like the new Arri Alexa 35 at $80K!! Bit depth is the key 10 bit in Slog3 is very gradeable - and the downsampled 6K sensor produces beautiful images form what I have been getting. The other key feature is the DR of over 14 stops (and I just saw another review where they actually tested and found over 14 stops of DR as claimed- in fact the DR tested to be the same as the FX 3 and FX 6!) The noise level is very acceptable and organic until you get up to extremely high ISO's ....
So true that and wow that DR is amazing! Camera of the year in my opinion
I've got my hands on one and can't wait to stress test its dynamic range. Are those 14 stops perceivable in real-world conditions or are they "lab" stops? This is what I want to know. Regardless of the results: the DR at the price is an incredible deal. 📽
Thanks so much I agree that your apsc observations have been overlooked, even by big UA-camrs, and thanks for all the subtle well hidden tips in your why's explanations and I'm also predicting that in the not too distant future, that most people who didn't like Sony's focus mapping feature, will all of a sudden do haha 😂😉! Thanks for all that please keep up the good work 👍🙂
Totally. I think as soon as people spend the time to learn how to use Focus Mapping it's going to be a massive selling point. Incredibly useful on smaller screens. 👽 I'm glad you spotted my tips. :) Hope you found them useful.
@@WildShadowsZA I totally agree too and never thought that your small screens idea, but come to think of it, that's where it'll really shine and cheers much and sure did When I've got enough money I'll get one I never thought I'd ever get an apsc but this is just too good to pass for the money lol
Incoming b and w youtube videos
😆 Even I was tempted
The X2D is making it really hard to even consider this one.
I know what you mean. The company has such a rich and interesting place in the history of cameras. The X2D will regardless be one that's spoken about. 😉
So insightful! I loved it!
Glad it was helpful!
Thouroughly enjoyed this interview, lots of insightful Q&A throughout and a really broad range of topics covered. As a part-time colourist looking to progress my experience, it was great to listen to this. Jill is always so enthusiastic and willing to give her time and insight in all her interviews. Thanks for sharing!
Very interesting thank you !!
Hi Kay. Very happy you found it useful. Which part was most valuable to you?
Helpful video, especially after watching The Batman and seeing what type of intimate atmosphere a shallow depth of field can create
Very happy you found it useful. 👽
came to watch for Jill...heard a South African accent and it made the video so much better!! AWEH!
Great to hear! 😆 dankie!
Any specific fixture you would recommend?
You can use ALMOST any fixture at its lowest intensity and use distance to adjust the size of the glint in the eye. (Obviously doesn't apply to very large size sources) Recently I've been using a 6inch LED tube at 1% and blacking out the sides until it's giving me the desired effect.
Another cool fact is that Jon Favreau was in Seinfeld as a clown 🤡 and he is in the Spiderman movies
Haha. That's right. Season 5, episode 20...poor George.
🔥🔥🔥
This is an excellent interview. Thanks for this!!

Does Mr Robot episode 5 of season 3 also classify as this?
Yes. 100 percent. One of the many techniques Sam Esmail uses to lock the viewer into the hyper reality of Eliot's perception of the story world. Esmail is particularly deliberate with this.
@@WildShadowsZA he surely had me locked in. Thanks Taiteezy💪🏽
