But, most importantly, you aren’t paying the skilled plumbers doing all of the skilled shop work rate wages, where, if they were on the job doing this skilled labor, you would be forced to pay them the scale they deserve. It’s funny how none of the companies who showcase their prefab shops mention this. Plumbing companies will do everything they can to keep skilled labor off of any scale-paying jobs and in the shop to avoid having to pay a fair wage to the skilled employees doing most of the hard work. Plumbing contractor to general contractor: “Sure - we can do this entire four-story hospital with just one foreman/journeyman and two apprentices. Don’t worry. We will keep up.” A plumbing contractor will bid the job considering twenty to thirty employees receiving scale wages, but only a chosen few will actually be on site receiving those wages. The rest are stuck in the shop doing prefab for the same job and only receiving regular wages. I wonder where all of those “saved” labor costs go.
