AP Statistics: Selecting a Non-Linear Model by Analyzing Residual Plots
Here we consider some data on the weights and lengths of a sample of fish caught in Finland. We will look as residual plots to decide if the true form of the association is linear, exponential, or power.

AP Statistics: Creating an Exponential Model

Here we first looking at how to make an exponential association linear using logs. We then take a look at how we can predict the gross box office revenue for a Christopher Nolan film based on how many weeks its been released.
AP Statistics: Normally Distributed Random Variation (Residuals) from LSRL
Переглядів 249Рік тому
In this video I look at how we can describe random variation away from predictions in least squares regression using an "error term" a Normally distributed random variable describing residuals or variations from our predictions. Big Ideas: We always assume that residuals are Normally distributed with a constant standard deviation for all X. In another lesson we will see how this leads to the co...

AP Statistics: Random Sampling Techniques

Here we define and distinguish the basic random sampling techniques described in AP Statistics: simple random samples (SRS), systematic, cluster, stratified, and multi-stage cluster. I go through a couple of problems to help us better understand the details.
AP Statistics: The Difference of Two Independent Random Variables, Example
Переглядів 4962 роки тому
Good day, statisticians! Here is a motivating example for why we need to know about the difference of two independent random variables to answer interesting questions. Here we attempt to find the probability that a randomly selected banana is bigger than a randomly selected apple. In retrospect, I wish I would have compared apples and oranges.
AP Statistics: Variance of the Difference of Two Independent Random Variables - Prove the Formula
Переглядів 4762 роки тому
Here I try to non-rigorously prove the formula for the variance of the difference of two independent random variables. Most folks want to subtract variance, but is that right? Do we ever subtract variances? Nope. Never. We only add. Why? Well watch.
AP Statistics: Combinations and Transformations for Sums of Random Variable - Formulas and Examples
Переглядів 1582 роки тому
Here I introduce the formulas for the sum of two independent random variables. I briefly contrast this with the transformation of random variables and do some examples. Sorry for forgetting how to add two numbers - not edits or fanciness here. Just working through the lecture.
How can we find the equation of the LSRL using regression to the mean?
Переглядів 3722 роки тому
In this video we find the equation of the LSRL using the correlation, the means, and the standard deviations of our variables. We start with practice making a prediction for a response variable using the principles of regression to the mean.
What is Regression to the Mean?
Переглядів 1,6 тис.2 роки тому
In this video I try to make intuitive the method regression back to the mean when making predictions for a response variable based on a known value of the explanatory variable. Did I succeed? I don't know. You can let me know! All things being equal, we would always predict an individual is average. However, if we know about another variable highly correlated to the response variable, we can st...

Plato's Republic, Book 4: Justice in the City and the Soul
Переглядів 1,2 тис.3 роки тому
Plato clarifies that justice in the city (or political justice) is analogically the same as justice in the soul (or ethical justice). Here we encounter Socrates' metaphorical account of the nature of justice and his reasons for thinking that an unjust life is not worth living even if you had everything possible external good the world can offer.
Plato's Republic, Book 2: Is Justice Good? The Ring of Gyges.
Переглядів 3,4 тис.3 роки тому
Here Socrates takes up the question of justice with Glaucon and Adeimantus, two young philosophers eager to find satisfying answers to their questions. Glaucon frames the question, "Is justice good?" by distinguishing three senses in which any act could be called good. We then hear the story of the Ring of Gyges which shows the "many's" view of justice. This ultimately will be contrasted with S...
Thrasymachus' Definition of Justice in Plato's Republic: Freedom, Happiness, and Wisdom

We being taking up the question you considered in the first discussion board: what is freedom and why do we desire it? I've met many westerners who suggested to have language without "is", because "is" only works with the abstract thats uncountable hence unparsable. They call it E english, I guess. Almost always we fail to keep track with that wich time(past and future) don't alter, hence the usage of Is is almost always falsifiable. Yet, if we only care to talk about changing things, simply because they provide us the sport of measuring increments so we can better predict and decide, our lives would be useless! Because Plato said truth can only be recollected. It cant be made nor deduced from the moving shadows on the cave's wall.

Timaeus Timaeus Timaeus If we read the book and not recognize that Timaeus is the first demigod (who created the universe) paying us a visit, and ofcourse wearing the human shirt so we dont just freak out, we would be missing the content of it. If you read Aristotle, it is obvious that Aristotle is God who authorized and provided for Timaeus to create the world.

The content of this video is great! A note on production. When you turn your head to read your notes the sound drops off about 50% and becomes mono-left. The slide "On Definitions" below your live feed is great. The free hand writing and drawing on the right is very hard to make out and it's why you turn your head. Also the printed page that you are showing us with your pen is impossible for us to read. So I would recommend dropping that part of the video and just have yourself on the left and the slide on the right. That way you can just tell us what documents you are reading from. We don't need to see it anyway, we trust you. That way your voice stays on the microphone and we don't see you going back and forth with the sound dropping in and out. Everything in the right side of the video is just a distraction from what you're saying which is critically important. Not trying to criticize, I truly appreciate the information you share. Wish you and your the best!

Your attempt to help a modern mind understand a simple concept by interposing the virtual unknowns of ancient thought processes is baffling, John. Time is certainly what it takes for an object to move from one point to another. There is also no point in claiming that something 'changes' by the passage of time (or movement) when we are focusing on the meaning of 'time'. Better, I think, just to realize that time cannot be created or altered, but can be measured by linking it to processes that consume energy in exactly measurable quantities (clocks, for example) Time and Eternity and not 'opposites', any more than 'kilo' and 'weight* are opposites - but I speak as someone who has lived in Greece for over 20 years without thinking that Plato and Socrates had much to offer on this fascinating subject. Thank you for for your thoughtful posting.
