Thinking about moving to Copenhagen but don't speak Danish? Does that even matter? No, but also yes.
In this video, I talk about the ease and challenges of living in Denmark without being able to speak Danish. I also compare the different approaches in Denmark's two major cities, Aarhus and Copenhagen. And how Danes in those cities expect foreigners, immigrants and expats to learn the local language.

If you ever want to learn Danish, I suggest ignoring what they write and listening to what they say. Language teachers, as well as people who just want to help with Danish, pretend the spoken language is closer to the written language than it is, but if you try to learn the Danish they pretend exists, you'll never be able to understand people in real world situations. The YT channel DR P3 has subtitles on all their videos and you can view the transcripts. It's an infinitely better resource for Danish learning than language schools.
I am a Dane who has lived and worked In 5 very different countries and been a traveler/tourist in several more. Even for a short visit in any country I have found that showing a little effort and respect goes a long way. How much effort you put into learning the language of your host country depends on several things. How long do you plan to stay? Do you have children who through your choices are forced to the privilige and difficulties of dual language/culture/school systems etc? For a short or longer time? And how much do you respect that aspect of your children's lives? I find your rant quite arrogant, mostly towards your children. A few times in Copenhagen restaurants I have been met by nice and enthusiastic young American employees in American English. I asked for a Danish speaker. Received an offended no. Though I have no problem hearing, reading or speaking English in its various forms, I cannot and will not accept such a business model in my country! Where both the naive US-youngsters and customers are scammed. While refugees who do not have the choice to stay in their own country struggle to learn both Danish and English and so much more to get even the lowest paying jobs.
Yeah, everyone should just learn English.
You are aware that Norwegian (bokmål) is in fact Danish with a twist from the time that Norway was Danish????
I mean that was kinda the joke…👀
Norwegian is West Norse, while Danish is East Norse. The orthography is based on Danish orthography, but Danish orthography doesn't have much to do with spoken Danish.
Pfff, danes don't care. We will gladly speak english with u haha
No Danes - No Denmark, so thats fine? Thank u fo yer sacrifice 👍🏽guess yer soldiers really died fo no reason..
@@Goldenfish-o5p i Guess so 🤷🏼♂️
One of my greatest motivation to get good at Danish was all the Danglish I was forced to endure. I'd much rather talk to people in Danish than listen to their broken English.
@@matt92hun broken english? Most Dane’s speak better English than native English or Americans? wtf 🤣
@@jackpetersen7231 That's what they seem to believe at least. Then they suggest going to the "soo", where you can "use some hours".
One benefit of learning Danish is that you will understand Norwegian and Swedish pretty well too without any training, so you get 3 languages for the work of one. 🙃
Did u just call our dialect norwegian? ....
it might be fine in CPH, so pls stay in CPH.
have multiple friends who do not speak danish at my uni, also friends who prefers english to danish despite them being able to use the language (danish is not their mother language)- I study in cph :)
Have you learnt Danish yet?
Is that really you Marketplaceman?
I've lived in Copenhagen for nearly 6 years now and while I've put a lot of effort into learning Danish, it still feels like a "cute gimmick" when I actually try to speak Danish to people. My accent isn't great - and I definitely only speak like I'm a 6 year old, but I feel quite often that as soon as I make a mistake, or almost - as soon as I open my mouth and someone can tell I'm a foreigner, I can see the excitement for them to practice their English on me and they'll immediately switch. Quite often I'll have conversations to a Dane where I'll be speaking Danish and they'll be replying in English. It definitely makes it feel a bit pointless sometimes and I've only once in my entire time living here met someone who couldn't actually speak English. Maybe I should visit Aarhus a bit more, as perhaps they're a bit more open to forcing foreigners to speak their language if they're telling you to learn it, but at least in Copenhagen, it's not just a matter of wanting to learn the language, but a matter of not being able to even practice it 😅
One of the problems with Danish is that they aren't really exposed to more than one way of speaking (or maybe two, if they still have a regional dialect). You either speak standard Danish, or wrong. Many don't even tolerate Danish dialects and look down on people who speak jysk/fynsk/bornholmsk.
I am native danish, and whenever I hear someone speak “danish” with a heavy accent and mispronouncing words, I really try to understand without switching to English. And that can be difficult, because I am not very good at “guessing” what people are saying, if the pronunciation is wrong. And I really try not to be arrogant or rude.
@@jakeforrest Thank you for helping us foreigners out! 😅 I actually came home from trying out a martial arts class today and the first time, I felt like I was actually using Danish as a way to properly communicate and also forced myself to not just fallback to English (which is also admittedly a bad habit because as soon as I can see someone is struggling to understand me, I'll switch to English), so I guess another issue is that Danish is so hard to pronounce with all the extra vowles so the barrier to entry to even get to the point where a native could figure out what you're saying is perhaps harder than someone speaking bad English, where people are so used to hearing weirdly pronounced English. (I guess I've just rehashed @matt92hun's point here though, so I'll stop there
@@jakeforrest It's difficult, because most varieties in Danish are extinct, or nearly extinct. People don't get the same kind of exposure to different ways of speaking the same language as with something like English, German, or Arabic.
Danish is so so so so hard, it would take me many years to learn it. No thank you.
Any other language would also take years to master...
I know all the vegetables and fruits already, I just don't know how to pronounce them correctly...
have a romanien friend who speak it fluently after 2 years - and his accent is good
Its easy, you just sound lazy..
It's not so much that it's hard, but they teach it wrong. They focus on writing and grammar for a language where writing is very different from speaking and it has maybe the simplest grammar out of all Germanic languages. When they try to teach speaking, they teach a form of speech that no longer exists, so you can't use what you learn in the real world. I could already read and still nobody understood me, then I found a single book about Danish phonology that used the actual international standard for phonetic transcription instead of the impressionistic mess most textbooks use and I went from everyone switching to English upon hearing my pronunciation to communicating fluently. What makes it hard is that you're forced to self study if you want to be any good at it as an adult.
What is the WORST excuse not to learn Danish? 👀
That in the first five years where they pay you the language course you are too busy getting your life up and when you had finally done it it is too expensive.
I have heard people say, in the presence of Danes, that it is "a waste of time" to learn Danish. Flat out disrespectful! The excuses pretty much always the same: "too difficult" (like anything new you are picking up), "I don't have any place to use it" (and you will never get to use it if you don't start), "I have a trip planned so I can't sign up for this module" (they will usually have another trip planned for when the next module starts and it will be the same excuse again)... But the best one has to be "I don't know if I'll stay", said by someone who has been more than ten years in the country, with Danish partner/kids and even owns property.
@@markrichardson21 haha that's actually a pretty well crafted one...
@@daro8921 I will flip that one around and say that it is absolutely fine if you want to learn my native language... but it should never be a necessity to function in Denmark. I would argue that English should be an official second language in Denmark, especially with how internationalized the Danish economy is.
@@daro8921 I think you have more important matters to be offended over currently with the increase in crime over there, get well 👍🏽

No dude, I'm not eating natto to survive.
Ohh yess you will and you gonna love it…
Thank you from Australia!! We will be in Denmark next year and now not apprehensive in being Vegan! (Even though this video is 2years old)👍👍👍
@jamesbaxter4360 for better or worse not much has changed in the past few years aside from all the Irma supermarkets closing down... But I am not so sure about things outside of Copenhagen. Thanks for checking out the video 🙌
Sorry to be the insufferable Vegan Purity Police, but I wouldn't want to buy natto with the bonito packet in it because whether or not I eat it, the money supports a meat product. I would rather try to find plain peanuts or beans or whatever might be available (I've never been) if I'm unsure about finding natto with only the ume or kelp seasoning that they sell here in my Asian grocery. But I commend you for appreciating natto and trying to find options for people! 💚
It's all good, I get where you are coming from. The video is focusing on "surviving as a vegan" in Japan, and admittedly are cutting some corners. For example none of the brands - aside from T's - mentioned in the video are vegan brands, therefore one could question buying anything from them. I love travelling to Japan, and I think a lot of other vegans do too, but it is a real challenge to eat vegan over there. This video was aiming to help with that. Thanks for checking it out!
Hello, great video, could you please advise on nice suburbs to live? I’m thinking of moving over with my family (two kids, 3 and six) Thanks!
It's a bit tough to answer this without knowing much about your situation and preferences. I would recommend having a look around the Copenhagen subreddit. This question pops up from time to time, but if you are willing to share a bit more details about your needs, you can always ask in there. It's a mix of locals and expats and people are generally helpful and of course very knowledgable about the city.
@@viktor-farkas Thank you!

Hey Viktor, thanks for nice video. Do have another video or can you share your experience with DK health care system in the context of baby's. E.g. like how easy is to access to the children doctor? Where will you call/go in case of urgent cases, etc ? Thanks
This is a complicated one. Your experience will greatly vary depending on how 'nice is your GP. They will be your first contact and the person who can give you references for specialists such as paediatricians, dermatologists and more. Some specialists do not require a referral such as ENTs, but most of them do. You will have to make your own appointment by calling around specialists, which is a bit of a lottery sometimes, to be honest. This system is a bit of a frustration for us because once your kid is sick you don't want to spend a day getting a referral, and calling around for an appointment that might be 2 weeks away, but that's how it works unfortunately. Alternatively, you could look into private health insurance that will get you seen faster. My company offers this as a benefit, and my children are covered within my policy. We have relied on this multiple times in the past when we just couldn't wait weeks for a specialist thru the public system. For urgent cases like life-threatening stuff just call 112. Other than that call 1813 which is the acute number within the Copenhagen region. On 1813 it's doctors or nurses who take the call so sometimes they give you a prescription on the spot, other times they send you to a hospital depending on your location. I love how so much of this is actually online e.g. bookings, your results and more. But having a non-helpful GP and the hunt for specialists when you need one can be a bit of a challenge.
Hey Viktor, thanks for the nice video. I am considering moving to Copenhagen area with family with 2 small children and a lot of luggage with us. Do you have any tips/advice for the moving process? - e.g.how much luggage would you take and how would you move it from the airport to the apartment cause the taxi seems expensive... thanks!
The airport is very well-connected with a train and metro station, so if your apartment is close to one of the lines it is going to be super easy. Taxis are indeed very expensive. You could download one of the taxi apps like TAXA and use their calculator to give you an idea for the price for the trip. I am not sure where are you moving from, but there are plenty of smaller moving companies that offer cross-country services within the EU, so maybe that could also be an option?
Really good vid, the honesty is great👍
Thank you for sharing this Viktor!

Maybe it is because its been proving that recycling really doesn do much, that some dont care. It is only like 2-3% of the sorted plastic that actualy gets made into new items. Just a quick example i do recall. Alot of paper and cardbox cant be reused either. Alot of glass and metal cant be reused either. And then there is the cost of recycling being so high they lose ALOT of money on it, so it aint worth it. And we all know what the greedy firms needs each year. So some places dont follow the "laid rules" to save cost. And improve there stocks ! Its just some fancy s**t they refuse to admit has failed in the end. So the view of thsoe in pwoer looks good in people eyes. Clearly some thing does get reused. Which is great honestly . Sadly there is barely any impact of the major trouple sorting is for the world either. Im so glad i'll be dead before it goes totally wrong.
I know that me peeling off the paper label from a metal can and putting them into separate bins will not do much to save the sea turtles. But I won't be a defeatist, I have children and I will do everything I can to try to set them a good example ✌️
hey nice channel. I discovered you thru vegan/japan stuff but really enjoying your other content. As an Aussie I loved Copenhagen, however I don't know if I could handle the winters
I lived in Melbourne for ~6 years and while the winters are definitely shorter, I really do not miss the poorly insulated houses in the cold months... Thanks for checking out the channel!
great video. I did Tokyo a few years as a vegan and while I did all the research, and knew all the places, even then it was still challenging. Having this would have helped me so much to know what I could just buy at the 711! Coincidentally the best veg ramen I had on the trip, wasnt mentioned in any guide book or you tube video. I was just randomly walking past it and it looked like a normal Ramen place but I noticed a gluten free option. Then on closer inspection of the menu they had 3 veg options. I ended up trying 2 of them they were amazing. Unfortunately that place closed during covid :(
My favourite restaurant ever has closed down during the pandemic. It was run by the most wonderful people and while the nothing much has changed on the outside, they still haven't opened up in years. Such a shame
When it is dark for 4 months of the year, what lamps you have in your home becomes very important. I love lamp!
Could you please talk about the conscription too? I'd like to know the reality of it. Not just in law.
Do you mean enlisting in the army? I do not really know much about that to be honest 😐
Very useful information . Thanks
Hi Is Aaman sandwiches vegan? Three of them seems to be vegan but is written vegetarian Have you tried Aamman sandwiches?
I never tried them, but I just had a look on their website. 1 of the 3 has sour cream on it, so that's out, but the other two doesn't list any ingredients that isn't vegan, but maybe they use regular butter on all sandwiches? I heard of Din Nye Ven having a few options, but never tried them.
Thanks for this! <3 I'm visiting Japan in a couple days for the first time EVER and along with being vegan, I'm pretty health conscious so the Natto and Kagome juice are great recommendations! Since I'm sure I'm going to be eating sooo many different things that might not have all the nutrition I need.
Thanks for watching, hope you had a fun trip!
Very cool video well done! How do you tell if the natto you're eating is the vegan version? As you know some have a meat based protein used in the culture medium and some use a non-meat based culture medium for fermentation. Obviously the non-meat based culture medium would be cheaper so presumably this is what's used in the cheaper natto, but unsure.
I heard of this before, but to be honest I’ve never came across it as far as I know… (My kanji game is not that strong so I usually ask for help) The natto I am showing you in the video is “okame natto”and they are using bacillus natto for the fermentation which is not animal derived. This brand is everywhere I usually just stick to it if I can. I never buy natto rolls from the convenient stores as those usually have some bonito or some other fish products :/
@@viktor-farkasthe bacteria for fermentation often comes in what's called a culture medium. This is a solution that contains the nutrients for the initial bacteria culture to feed on and often shipped in vials to manufacturing plants from a master batch producer. As it's not a main ingredient of the process not all manufacturers are required to state it on the packaging. Likewise the same thing labeling-wise happens with some cheeses like mozzarella rennet; some use plant some use animal rennet. I was wondering if you knew concretely that this natto was vegan; I wonder if there is a way to find out? Anyway keep the videos coming!
I know Miyako Natto and Natto Meijin are confirmed not to use any animal products. I went thru lots of conversations on several vegan FB groups for Japan and I couldn't find anything suggesting that the natto that I am shown in the video uses any animal products... Sorry for the super late reply!
@@viktor-farkas Many thanks for the reply that's very useful information; thank you!

Hi Viktor ! Really like the quality of you videos. I am considering moving to Copenhagen with my family so that's why I came across your channel. Can I ask, u mentioned you live in the suburbs of Copenhagen, did you manage to rent through KAB, and if so how long was your waiting time? Were you renting from a private landlord while waiting? Thanks so much !
We've moved since I made this video but yeah we used to rent from KAB. The place was in the Husum area, a two-floor townhouse (plus basement) and we paid around 6,500DKK per month. We got the place as a temporary student accommodation, so there wasn't really much waiting time, but only because we had a contract with a semi-fixed end date. These houses are being renovated now, that is why we had to move. Once renovation is finished the waiting time is around 20+ years for a place like this for a permanent contract. I heard from a friend that in the past (like 10 years ago) getting a place from KAB in the outskirts of Copenhagen wasn't that difficult, but I am not sure what is the situation now. I hope this helped a bit!
you are from hungary? so you don't actually need a residency permit or not?
You are right. Getting PR was mostly an extra layer of security for us, just in case things go really bad for Hungary in the EU. It is very unlikely, but with kids and all, I just wanna play it safe.
