Make interesting house chords with an Ableton chord generator
Here's a method for generating chords that sound good, then using sound design to make them saucy and deep for house / deep house / minimal.

If you are going to spend time making music, just spend a little bit of time learning music theory. I think of it like knowing a map. You can go for a ride, not knowing where you are going, and that can be fun. But if you what to know where all places you are realy intrested in are, and what is the best way to get there, get a map. If you know just a bit of theory, you music will be so much more effective. People spend a lot of time learning production, and mixing/mastring. I have spent a lot of time learning about production, mixing, and mastring, but the time learning music theory is just as, if not more effective. It's like having a cheat code, knowing what notes/chords to use, and just as important what order to put them, to get exactly what result you want.
I mean I agree, music theory is extremely valuable and I'm a big fan of continually learning it myself. I don't mean to suggest that anyone shouldn't learn it. I also love generative tools like this that utilize theory on their own, because the immediacy of having seeds for ideas spit out like this can be very helpful for inspiration, whether you're well versed in theory or not.
What software or kit is this? I got komplete 15 standard electronic since I’m just making hardgroove but these sounds sound amazing. What would you recommend?
The chord generator on the PML website is different to the one on the video.
How so? I made some modifications to it that you can follow @1:25, or are you seeing something else?
@PeterRobotMusic The video shows a rack with 16 macros. The one I have just downloaded has 8.
@@kieranmchugh172 I went through the link in my description and still got the 16 macro one. Try downloading their most recent version from this link: bit.ly/abt_freeSamples
@@PeterRobotMusic Thank you. User error. I went directly to the website not via the link first time.
Damn STEPS is really clean. Ty for the tips
Yeah steps is good. I've been waiting for that one. 🙏

very cool vid, thanks!
Any video recommendations for a beginner?
I haven't seen many beginner Ableton guides, so I can't speak for their quality. But I usually like the content from this guy, so his is worth a shot: ua-cam.com/video/okhZ65RbTe8/v-deo.html
@@PeterRobotMusicthanks so much! Love your channel!
@@angelgcastro1 Appreciate it!
This is amazing, thanks for making this video!
It took me 10 months from starting out with Maschine to finally getting around arranging - and that is because of your tut. All the other workflows I saw didn´t really click with me. Your one does, so thank you for sharing it!
Glad I could help!
Thank you
That's awesome, really groovy. You should do a video on the arrangement feature too.
Glad you dug it. Here you go: ua-cam.com/video/ROZxWlYrwGM/v-deo.html
Great video! where are the samples from?
Thanks! I get most of my samples from Splice
Maravilloso Contenido con muchisimo groove, gracias por el aporte
That's my jam :o)
Like the format of the vid, very intresting to see and inspirational, much appreciated!
Why would you use that append function instead of just creating all those scenes/patterns/clips in the main view to begin with? Seems like you are creating more work for yourself without any added benefit of doing it that way.
Are you asking why you would use the arrangement view in the first place, or are you saying there's a different way to get the clips into the arrangement view?
You've got these great drum racks with a bunch of kicks or snares that let you kind of find the right sound. Are those racks you've made, or used a tool to make? Nice video! textural top loops are something I don't usually try and build piece by piece like this, but you get a really good rhythm and character this way.
Thanks! They're racks I built myself. One method, that can be a little tedious, is to grab 10 tracks you really like, then go through a large library of high quality kicks and snares and A/B them next to each track to select the ones that fit your taste well. Another method is just to find high quality sample producers (vengeance for example) or comb through sample sites for high quality samples and gradually add to your library.
Awesome groove, love the sound of this! Great seeing the creation process as well
Love seeing people make fun tracks on Maschine! Nice work and great video!
Perfect
Really nice. Keep up the good work. I also really appreciate the space you’ve managed to create for all the parts.
Do you prefer the push 2 instead of the maschine? Glad to see there are deals on the push 2 on the used market now
Not necessarily, they both have significant benefits. So far I've only been playing on the push for a couple months and I haven't worked out all the tricks and kinks yet. As far as a standalone interface, I still find the Maschine to be smoother and more complete. That said, I use Ableton a lot, and it's a better DAW than Maschine, so the push is really good specifically if you're working with Ableton.
Hey Peter happy you’re back! How would you compare maschine controller workflow with push experience? Are you satisfied with the results you’re getting so far?
Hey! It's a mixed experience so far. I haven't dedicated as much time to learn the push as I have the Maschine, but the workflow still feels a little clunkier than the Maschine. I like the bigger pads on the maschine and the parameters in devices are more directly accessible, where you have to kind of menu dive for some parameters on the push. On the flipside, I'm super familiar with Ableton, and it's a lot more versatile than the Maschine DAW, so the push is beneficial for the purpose of working with Ableton. I'm sure I'll continue working with each device for the foreseeable future
@ thanks for the reply! I recently got a push 3 controller. I produce music using external synths and a drum machine. I was looking for a hybrid setup where all track parts are not distributed among boxes, but gathered in one place and preferably it is a desktop daw. In my case it is Ableton live. I expected I could only focus on the controller as it totally works with the Machine. But in practice, the push only launches clips that I mostly operate with the mouse. So when you say ‘clunkier’ it sounds very understandable. Keep learning the workflow of course. But …
Very nice, OVE IT! noob here trying to replicate, took 2 hours to simply do your 1st 45 seconds :D Did you use any Pack other than RETRO Mashines Mk2?
Thanks! I didn't use any other packs, but I did use another device for the bass - Massive, preset: Dry n Wet. The rest of the sounds are samples from Splice.
great video, very helpfull
I ordered one of these on sale a few days ago and it looks like a lot of fun. Is it easier to program songs compared to the Ableton Push 3 or more difficult? I feel like I'm stuck trying to figure out everything on Push 3 even though it is a wonderful device.
I've got a Push 2, not 3, so I'm not sure about the 3. But comparing the Push 2 to the Maschine, there are some big differences. In the short run I'd say it's easier to program music on the Maschine just because the interface is a little more intuitive and user-friendly. As far as full songs go, though, the arrangement process is a little more dialed in on the Push. They both have a learning curve though. For the Maschine, I would look up the NI Complete Guide to the Maschine on UA-cam and that will teach you all the features, and it won't take that long.
@@PeterRobotMusic thanks!
Man I would pay you for walk through tutorials of how to get to this point in Maschine - have you decided to do learning content like that?
I'm definitely interested starting a patreon and doing more in depth educational content eventually. I just need to come up with a structure before I get that moving. I'm also down to do lessons if people are interested but haven't gone down that road yet.
@@PeterRobotMusic You should definitely do this, there aren't many courses going into this type of depth in this style of music - I'm very good in Ableton but can't get on with Maschine and I'm desperate to make it work. Are you UK based?

Dude you’re hilarious! Lol😂So good to see you making house music on the mk3. Gonna try and follow that up with my own. Please do more and speak over it. Learning a lot.
Thanks for the feedback! I'll be getting some more Maschine content up soon, just out of state and only have my Push with me right now. I'll keep that in mind with the speaking, it's kind of a fun way to make videos
FYI my first time here and I did subscribe lol. But it would’ve been nice to see you actually is in the app to learn some stuff. Just saying.
u left Maschine? 😥
I did not! But I'm out of state right now and have the Push with me and not the Maschine, so I'm making this content instead :) Also I've been trying to get well versed on the Push since I write a lot in Ableton
Track sounds great! And thanks for the walkthrough.
Still use mc707 or the maschine+ is the upgrade all around?
Nada, I switched to Maschine after about 6 months or so of the 707. Fun device, but the features on the Maschine won out for me
@@PeterRobotMusic In the same boat, mc707 has great sounds but chord mode is limited and i miss a proper piano roll somewhat. Im thinking push 3 since i know how to use ableton. I see ur on ableton with newest vids too. Maschine+ has the lock button to revert changes, is there similar one for push?
@@somtamtim I haven't found a lock button for Push yet, but I'm still pretty new to it. I haven't found as many strong features on the Push alone as Maschine yet, but the fact it controls Ableton is the key thing for me
I’ve had a watch and listen to all of your Maschine MK3 vids over the past few days and just wanted to say hats off dude - I love the style of tunes you are making here and I’m picking up some great ideas about how I can up my use of Maschine. Particularly like seeing what you do with the sustain in transient master to create space in loops, how you use band pass filters to stop melody, vox and fx fill out the spectrum too much and how you were using lock states and macros in one of the vids to keep things live and improvised. Seems like you are drawing your content from a well curated user library rather than the Maschine library most of the time - is that correct?
Awesome, thanks for the feedback! It makes my day to to hear that someone is getting a lot out of these, truly. And yup, you got it. One thing I haven't discussed much is a big part of the process is hours-long sessions combing Splice for the right samples for what I'm going for. A common sentiment I hear and agree with is that a big part of the battle is starting with the right samples
Yes absolutely - it’s a bit like properly digging in the crates for vinyl back in the day - you had to go through stacks and persevere to find those gems. Similar with sample digging you have to be comfortable that you can go through folders and folders of loops, stabs and vox and come away with just a couple… and it’s a process that only really works if you do dedicated sessions sample digging upfront coz we all know that when you’ve got a nice little idea brewing no one wants to stop that flow for an hour searching for the perfect sample - you just take the 1st one that is relatively passable so you can get back to creating - well that’s certainly what I do in that situation anyway! But in closing my waffle 😂 I’d just like to say… it stands out to me loud and clear that you’ve put a great deal of care and effort into curating your samples before setting to work - it must be a very enjoyable and fulfilling process when your in the flow creating due to the upfront investment!
after listening AFX's analord series, I was looking for something similar to it for days and now I have found something that matches it's vibe, I was creating sample based music and now transitioning to acid house for a change, I was not able to find any good tutorials for it, I really appreciate this video, it helped me alot. Do you have any other similar videos which might help me? I would love to watch them too. Thanks.
Glad you dug it! I don't have anything else on acid house specifically, I'm also not sure where there are other tutorials on the genre, it's a little less common. The song in my video "Track from scratch on Maschine MK3 - minimal tech house" has kind of a similar vibe though, and I go into a little more depth in the walkthrough so that might help
@PeterRobotMusic I only have one question, let's see whether you know about it or not, afx's made entire analord series with hardware sequencing ( or atleast that's what many people say ( on reddit )), so how come the sounds are constantly evolving rather than repeating his drum patterns are very minimal and groovy in the entire series so I just wanted to understand the thought process behind his acid house style creation, like it consumes almost 80% of my brain all the time but I still haven't received a good answer because Mr. James prefers to live a quiet life so no-one really knows well.
@@deniswastaken Hm. Yeah I haven't read up on the equipment RDJ used for the Analord series. But I can say that hardware sequencing is very capable of creating a lot of infinitely evolving sounds if you're using the right hardware, so it wouldn't surprise me too much that he did it all on hardware. As for his though process, if we only knew.
The Robots are taking over!!!!

Great to see you back. And good timing because I've just been considering a shift from Maschine to Ableton Live.
Nice! Yeah Ableton is extremely versatile. It's hard to beat the tactile immediacy of the Maschine, but I can definitely make stronger tracks in the long run in Ableton because of all the capabilities. Definitely worth learning.

Most of the chords and stabs I have I got from Splice
