Kawartha Backyard Farm’s mission is to inspire and encourage everyone to start producing food. This channel was created to support the Kawartha Backyard Farms project, a free service helping residents of the City of Kawartha Lakes in Ontario Canada set up and maintain food gardens. Thank you for checking out the channel and helping to support a more equitable food system.
COMPLETE GARDEN BUILD PART 1: BUILD 'N' FILL
It's never too late to start a garden! In this series of videos we'll take you through the entire process of building, planting, maintaining, harvesting, and winterizing a garden.
In this first video our resident Garden Gnome shows you how to build and fill raised garden beds. Raised beds are an ideal choice for anyone wanting to garden who may have mobility restrictions, wants to keep pets out of their crops, or for anyone really, you don't have to have any specific reason to want raised beds.
Thank you for choosing to watch our video. Kawartha Backyard Farms is on a mission to end food insecurity within the City of Kawartha Lakes by promoting growing food in our living spaces and helping residents start their own backyard farms.
How our project works is residents can join completely for free to receive assistance in starting and maintaining a food-producing garden. All of the labour and knowledge we provide is completely free as long as 30% of the produce grown is donated to local community support agencies that host some sort of food security program. We also host a free market where all are welcome to stop by to share, trade, or just pick up some free food. This is a barrier-free project meaning no one ever needs to provide any personal information or proof of need. We all need to eat!
To help support this project please like and share our content and of course subscribe if you haven't already. The purpose of this channel is to achieve monetization to fund this project and provide more support to our community. If you are in a position to support financially please consider donating to our gofundme campaign (gofund.me/c43ed4300)
As our growing season ramps up please stay tuned for many more videos and updates!
Until the next video, we hope you have a wonderful time in your gardens!

Come Plant Onions With Us!
Переглядів 140Місяць тому
Garden Gnomes are like Ogres in that we are similar to onions. We can make you cry, and we sometimes smell bad, but most importantly we have many layers. Last season we had a pretty decent onion harvest despite growing onions in a lot of shade. This year we are planting them in the main field of the backyard farm which will get full sun, and will be trying out some intercropping techniques as w...
Easy Perennial Herbs For Beginner Gardeners!
Переглядів 7682 місяці тому
Herbs are the most expensive produce items we buy when comparing price per product weight. Often their price per pound can reach $50 or more. Since they grow quickly, can tolerate a variety of conditions from full sun to shade, and can be grown in various soils, they are a must for all gardeners, especially beginners. They also provide great health benefits by being rich sources of micronutrien...

Kawartha Backyard Farms: Carrot Harvest
This is fantastic, can’t wait to see what’s growing on in the next few months!
@124cookiie we’ll be growing all the best fruit vegetables of course! 😊 too bad we can’t grow cookies though 😂
New method ! That is how I started shredding leave before I bought the shredder. Fo w shrtwhile in Between I used lawn-mower but gaveup using lawnmower because part of the shredded leaves could not be raked away from the grass.
it could not be anymore true lol
swim pool
Ahh if only with this early heat we are getting a pool would be so nice 😂
Lawn mower with a mulch bag! You're welcome!
Thanks for watching!
Love these videos 🧅
Are they thornless raspberries
No, they do have thorns.
cool thanks🎉
I think 🤔 I'm coming over to get me some.
Bird bathe 😂😂😂❤Hobart Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺 👌 😋 ♥️ ❤️
Do you have a lawn mower? Especially a mulching mower if so you will be able grind them very fine if you choose.
We do have a lawn mower but it was already winterized at this point.
@@Kawarthabackyardfarms my levels are the last thing I do before putting the lawnmower away for winter. IMHO it’s worth keeping out till my leaves are broken down. However if you use your weed wackier it gonna take more time as you can only process a small amount at a time. Good luck.
Nice feet. I always like to make sure that my third foot can get some air when I go outside on a chilly day
Thank you for your comment… I am beyond perplexed by what you mean though 😂
Sounds good 😊
I particularly love giant Eastham turnips, they get huge and are delicious! :)
I will have to look for those! Thank you for the recommendation. 😊
:)
You look young- well doing puns well takes a lifetime of work...good luck.
0:09 Cringe. What a bummer. Good bye.
That is the largest Sunflower I have ever seen. I bet those fresh seeds were so good.
It was definitely the biggest we have grown. We didn’t eat the seeds though, saved them to plant this season.
Well, well well, said the farmer. 3 holes in the ground. Love your humor, from France
😆 that’s also a good one! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Hope you have a great season ahead, or continue a great season. I’m curious what your climate is like and what you’re able to grow? Please feel free to DM if you’d like.
You should wear a mask, as the leaf dust will get up your nose. :D
Grazie da Roma😊
Great info thanks 🎉
Thank you so much for watching and for your comment! Hope you have a great season ahead. 😊
I use a lawnmower as well, but I don't use the mowers bag. That way I can do a few passes over the leaves to get a finer result. I chopped 20 green bins of leaves last fall and have them ready for this year's composting. I also use the mower to chop up all the weeds and old plants before putting them in the compost, makes the compost run a lot faster.
Wow that sure chops up the leaves nicely. Why get a leaf mulcher when you can use your mower or trimmer. Your yard is beautiful!
@triciac1019 thank you for watching and for your comments. This method is a bit of a shoulder workout so I have since started using a hand drill with a paint mixing drill bit that has metal zip ties attached to it. Works just as good and doesn’t leave bits of plastic in the compost.
Use a lawnmower!
That is the usual option. However, as I mentioned previously I had already winterized the lawnmower.
Mac has the zoomy😊
Hi where do you get your straw mulch in Ontario
I get straw from Peaveymart. It’s quite affordable and is free of pesticides and herbicides.
Ok thanks
😂 brilliant intro
Thank you for getting through the cringe 😬 😂
You are wonderful. Ive subscribed 😊
Thank you so much!
Asparagus! This one is expensive in my area, but I really love the taste. I assumed it would be terribly hard to grow :( In fact, I assumed it only grew in swamps xD since it looks like a grass I only see in swamps
We love growing asparagus and it is really easy to grow. But it does take a long time before it’s able to be harvested.
So many great ideas, can’t wait to get growing 🌱
Love this!!!! 🫶🏽
Thank you so much for watching and so glad you enjoyed it. 🌱 💚
Thank you for your tips. You mentioned some crops I never heard of. I really am new! I’ve been trying to find a good site to help me learn more. Am trying to learn all I can on companion planting and know better of when to start seeds in doors. I’ve purchased seed packets and I’ve had to research if it’s an annual or a perennial. Also, what can I plant next to each other. So much to learn. Makes me want to quit before I even begin. Anyway, great video. Very informative. Thank you.
Thank you for watchinig and subscribing. I greatly appreciate you joining and am so glad you enjoyed the video! There is really so much to learn and I am also learning new things everyday. Please stick with it, I know it can be overwhelming at times but it really pays off in the long run. If you ever have doubts or feeling like turning in the garden gloves please feel free to reach out. Planting love 🌱💚
Why no eye protection?
I like to live dangerously 🏴☠️
😂
great idea
The zucchini myth... i dont buy into it. I still can not get mine to grow, let alone produce to much for us.
I’m sorry to hear you haven’t had much success with your zucchini. My experience has been that they produce endlessly for us all summer and up to our first frost. If you are trying to grow them again I will send as much of our zucchini magic/luck to your garden! Hope you have a wonderful season ahead. Plant some love! 🌱 💚
Wow, glad to find out I am not the only one. The last time I tried zucchini, I had 5-6 hills, and got 1 zucchini. When I saw it, it was about 3 inches long. It was dead and gone the next day. I haven't been brave enough to try it again.
@@Kawarthabackyardfarms I have tried like 3 yrs in a row. My summer squash doesn't do very well as of yet. My winter squash has done ok. I will keep trying till there is no seed left. Lol
@Kawarthabackyardfarms Maybe I am feeding them to much animals 💩 🤔 In my planting holes. I have clay dirt so it's a working trial
Tks for promoting purple potatoes ❤🦋
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment on my video. I greatly appreciate your time and support for this project. Plant some love 🌱 💚
It's really nice what you are doing! Thanks! I've shared your video.
Thank you for watching, subscribing and sharing. I greatly appreciate you taking the time to do so. 🌱 💚
Thanks!
😆 LOL

Facts!
Quite a few times
In the series called The Blue Zones, they review the lifestyles of people around the world who live in the places where the largest percentage of people live to the age of 100. Gardening was a common trait.
Absolutely it is! It’s a great way to stay physically active and produce highly nutritious foods. Both of these behaviours are associated with not just long life but also aging with vitality and maintaining quality of life.
This is way too accurate 🤭
We’ve seen somethings, terrible things! 🤣
