What makes us good friends?
A reflection on our friendship, and the strengths and weaknesses in our friendship skills. Tree podcast remains a valid premise indeed. I will pick better trees and camera angles and try to improve every iteration. Thank you David for supporting my antics and for being my rock these past few years. Thank you Hailey for filming us, and thanks for all your feedback and advice.

    I really resonate with the concept of a third place in your life. I know personally as a child my third place was secluding myself into a game world, similar to your experience playing Hades. This is such an easy way to separate from your home and work life, and that convenience is important in a life where the world is at your fingertips. Now as an adult, I advocate for more social versions of this experience. Specifically, I enjoy using Dungeons and Dragons as a tool to both create a third place for my friends and I to escape to, while cultivating the social aspect of friendship. Though being the game master who writes their own stories is difficult, it's currently the best way for me to have a convenient third place, and hopefully provide that opportunity for my friends as well.

    From an American perspective one thing that infuriates me about the whole college system is the sheer cost of it all. As someone who actually did the whole “pay your way through college” schtick to not get saddled with loans, the whole process was so scarring it turned me off from getting a Master’s Degree.

    I find that as a kid, the educational system was funneled towards college in the sense that I always thought "well, I will finally be able to learn what I want to learn when I get to college" and when I was in middle school and already severely mentally ill, I failed to see the value in much of my education. It was always "when I get to high school then I will start working hard because then I will finally have a motivation to go somewhere (college)" I was a child in gifted education with undiagnosed A.D.H.D. that had no idea what I was doing everything for. It felt pointless from the beginning and I left school when I was 16, but the hard part is that this is extremely frowned upon. I tell people I dropped out at 16 and it has a negative connotation, I tell people that I got my diploma at 16 and suddenly I am ahead of people my age and seen as smart. It is so weird. This year I started to take college seriously and I noticed the lack of passion my peers had for their careers, the uncertainty and lack of confidence coming from young students in their careers is something that you just have to power through. I decided on community college and online university for my bachelors. There is another negative connotation there, but I quickly discovered that my passion was derived from wanting to talk to other people. I would not have been able to figure out that I want to do social work and eventually become a lawyer if it were not for the ability I currently have to connect with people from all different age groups and walks of life. To me, the idea of a university always seemed to restrict my ability to communicate with all kinds of different people. I find that this is not something that a typical university with students my age could have ever given me. As someone on the outside looking in, I have a negative view of university as a whole. Not that I believe that university is not full of extremely intelligent people. But the debt, the empty promises, and oftentimes the culture is something that I never felt a need to have. It is scary to think about how many students I have talked to that are not and have never been in it for their actual education. Being taught that university is just the natural course of things should not be normalized in the way it is. I can really understand when you mention how you feel lesser than for not contributing to certain conversations. For me, this was what deterred me from ever being who I was in a classroom setting. I am about to be a senior in university and not being in an actual college classroom has allowed me to be authentic in any outside setting (even if that means an overinvolvement in student life). I feel free! But the idea of speaking up is intimidating and then seeing the same people every single week is perplexing. To stop the yapping, I will break it down to, we need more communication in every area, we need more hands on experiences, we need less elongated lectures that allow for little critical thinking or discussions, we need more passion! Where is the passion! Why are we passionate and too afraid to show it? When did we all stop talking? But yes, this was a long video but I am glad it popped up in my feed, it seems to me like this was something you have definitely wanted to get off of your chest and I understand why. Stay safe!

    Touching upon the clip and ideas presented in reason 4 to me seem to be predominantly the largest motivator for the Key Shifts in the Electorate as well as dominance of the "alt-right pipeline". I enjoyed the video. One major thing I believe you to have unfortunately left out were the environments created out of covid. Stimulus to help the economy when the largest squeeze on it was not from the side of demand. My friend and I received all three stimulus and I can tell you we never should have gotten them (we had and many others I know just put it in savings which helps no one in the context of it being given by tax dollars). Good sentiments and aid was probably the right call, but the stimulus weren't very discretionary. Immunity from liability being granted to the likes of pfizer and moderna in addition to being paired with mandates from the government on a state and federal level to take the vaccines strongly helped breed distrust and enable conspiracy. Overall weak representation and messenging from the democratic media to correctly tackle the real world explanation of funding of Ukraine allowing right wing (and russian propaganda) platforms to control it. And to top it all off high rates of inflation from Q1 2021 all the way to 2024 all fueled anti-incumbency. It's easier to be less influenced by the perceived hardships committed 4+ years ago than the hardships felt within the past 3 years. I think democrats had a good chance, but running an incumbent was not the right call since that administration could never get it's messaging effective to the american people. Kamala endorsed to be the Candidate subverting primary vote, President Trump being granted immunity on top of what seemed to be filibustering his prosecution and Biden pardoning his son just makes it all feel like it's all one big club and we aren't in it. $2.5B being spent on 2024 campaigns alone churn my stomach. Who are the major donators hiding behind 501c4s? SUPER PACs working with 501c4 non-profits (and other methods of anonymous funding) have undermined our elections for years and will continue to do so until something is done about it. I mean due to shit like this a great example would be from a linked GOP PAC running a contradictory ad on Kamala running her as pro-israel in Michigan and pro-palenstine in Pennsylvania to present her as two-faced. Realistically how are the American people supposed to combat this propaganda. This is just one example but a perfect one to illustrate the distrust that really is beginning to seep deep within our people. So much money spent to divide us through ideology, race, sex, and lies.

    • @TreetopTreaties
      @TreetopTreaties Місяць тому

      Thanks for your insightful comment, I agree that we haven't really processed covid and the distrust that spawned, but for this video I just wanted to share the narrative that felt compelling to me and put it out there instead of letting it fizzle out in my head. But these are all topics I'd like to cover and discuss with people in the future. I don't really know how to combat the propaganda, but this is my effort in trying. I choose to be a delusional optimist. Thank you again for your thoughts and hope to see you in my comments in the future :)

    It's an elitist perspective to imply that the critique from the right ought to be dismissed, and that you await for the left to weigh in before lending any support to reforming higher education.

    • @TreetopTreaties
      @TreetopTreaties Місяць тому

      I believe the critique from the right is just as necessary as from the left, I meant to imply the figures that want to defund and boycott higher ed entirely and have everyone go to trade school, those critiques should be dismissed. I can see how you would interpret that from my video though, so for that I apologize, and thank you for your comment :)

    • @ParadoxPerspective
      @ParadoxPerspective Місяць тому

      @ those critiques can be steel-manned with a degree of practical validity, though. Educational structures today, as you have pointed out in your video, serve to sort and define class distinctions much more than they serve to disseminate the relevant information necessary for solving real problems in the world. In fact, they always have. This is the Oxford model of education at work for its intended purpose, which was a framework for training the English nobility sufficient that they could administrate an empire. It is increasingly evident that with the advent of information technology in particular we are sacrificing competency attained by more efficient but less official methods of practical learning for the sake of preserving our class structure. Especially so if you consider that the extreme outliers of performance will self-select for the most efficient methods, and the current social structure applies false negative pressure on competent autodidacts. What would be principally wrong with disposing of this notion of class-attainment through institutional participation entirely, and focusing solely on optimizing practical education, and unburdening the working classes from the yoke of supporting their social upper class? After all, our technological society has progressed immensely recently, and this has accumulated social and environmental inequities that are unsustainable by our current institutions.

    I was thinking similar thoughts as you. I think a debate forum should be made an integral part of universities it should be done on two levels By individuals who debate eachother or face the student body and present their case and group debates where people can freely switch sides based on their individual position and temperament. And have it mandatory for every semester to participate and it be across year levels. The rest of the students' classes should be focused on vocational studies and skill certifications that are pass fail by industry standards in consultation with what businesses want from entrepreneurs and employees. Because at the end of the day most students won't admit it but everyone wants either recognition or economic comfort. Having finished a stem masters in biotech. My opinion on the outlook even with changes is really bleak. Frankly, anyway, you shake it to universities or any alternative that becomes central to people gaining upward mobility economically is going to be dogmatized and gatekept and most ideas to get around that will be ill concieved. And if economic insentive is the only motivator, then there is just something wrong with the culture itself that's only going to self correct with hard enough times. It could just be like with rat universe 25. A society beholden to a eldritch beuracracy over community, responsibility cannot succeed.
