Mix them together, add a little oil and you have a great gun cleaner. That's the basic formula for Ed's Red, the most effective and aggressive bore cleaner I use: 1 part each acetone, mineral spirits, kerosene (which is similar to mineral spirits), automatic transmission fluid (light oil with detergents and other additives).

I would love to see a how to build please. Currently modifying an old dining table with: - Built in felt lined dice trays (just glued felt onto a thinner bit of wood for the "box". - TV (smaller that that one lol) on top with a border. Need to see if it's too tall next D&D night. - Expanded panels out sides so we can hold all of our snacks, maps (TV above now, hopefully) dice, mini's etc. It's a goal of mine to build a table from (relative) scratch which has the indented game table with screen and plastic too. Thank you.

    • @FridayWorkshop

They aren’t though. We did a video on this. Paint thinner can include mineral spirits but not all are mineral spirits based. Also the mineral spirits paint thinners are typically less refined and less pure than mineral spirits which makes them a little less expensive but also a little harsher.

In the coatings industry, solvents are key to everything. The two that you have shown here are very common, and speaking loosely from the stand point of chemistry they are kind of at each end of the spectrum from the standpoint of "speed". Meaning that acetone is the VERY fastest to evaporate (therefore most flammable) yet it is fingernail polish remover and mineral spirits is pretty slow. I worked on coatings in the food can business for more than 20 years so sliding up and down the scale of solvent speed was a daily activity, depending on the application. To a large extent, every food can on the market shelf is customized to the product. Therefore the coating characteristics vary and so does the solvent requirement. Getting to my point (actually two points), there are other solvents on the shelf that are just as useful but represent slower speeds relative to Acetone. While there are many on this scale, generally I would offer this scale. #1 - Acetone, #2 - MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone), #3 - MIBK (Methyl Isobutyl Ketone, #4 - Xylol, #5 - Xylene, #6 - Mineral Spirits. At the beginning of the progression, they are plane solvents and when you get to mineral spirits, you can think of part solvent and part light oil. The most important thing to remember is that these are all very flammable. Note: There is a cousin to Acetone often sold in aerosol form as carburetor cleaner - DAA (DiAcetone Alcohol). It's similar to Acetone but SLOWER, and lower on the list of flammability. Now to my second point, there is another class of solvents that are great around the house (from the point of flammability) that DO NOT BURN. While all of these solvents can be very unhealthy to be around, it is really unwise to use flammable solvents if it is not necessary. What is different about this group is that they are Chlorinated Solvents. In no particular order: Chloroethane - 1,1,1 Trichloroethane) often sold in aerosol form as some cleaner like brake cleaner. It has a very similar cousin called TriChlor - 1,1,2 TriChloroethylene. In my lab days, we got these in 55 gallon Drums for cleaning up coater machines. One more of note is Ethylene Chloride - 1,2 - DiChloroethane. Again, all of these are suitable for cleanup, but in the case of coatings and plastics, IT IS NECESSARY TO TEST FOR ATTACK, as some may dissolve. All of these are available in the box / hardware stores, ether around paints and coating or in the automotive / aerosol department. I strongly urge the use of respirators that are intended for use with organics (employ Activated Carbon) as part of the filter media. When used and fitted correctly, YOU WILL NOT SMELL THESE SOLVENTS OR COATINGS THAT THEY ARE IN! THE USE OF NITRILE GLOVES IS ALSO A GREAT IDEA, AND KEEP THEM AWAY FROM CHILDREN, CLOSE THE CONTAINERS TIGHTLY, AND STORY IN A SAFE COOL PLACE !!!!!

I used to paint new homes 20 years ago and looking at your list I don’t see Toluene, Lacquer thinner, & paint thinner. Are these 3 already included under the solvents you named? I know Toluene was “hotter” than Xylene because I have used both for cutting fast dry oils in the winter time and xylene made me wait 60-90 minutes longer before it was dry on the door and I could rehang them. Just curious, thanks

About 60 years ago I was taking a university level organic chemistry class with lab. Acetone was the cleaning solvent that we used for our glass cleaner. Turns out that acetone is a known contact skin irritant-that wasn’t known to me at the time. I woke up one morning the day after a lab with blisters running from my finger tips to my elbows. The blisters were extremely itchy, painful and debilitating. I was unable to write and barely able to use either hand. I dropped out of class and lab(the class and lab were only offered together). I retook the class a year later. This time I put a compound called Kerodex on my hands, followed by cotton liner gloves and finally surgeons gloves. Even after 60 years I am uber paranoid around acetone.
