About Rice Field Records
I'm an American and when I first came to Japan, I lived in a seaside town in Okayama Prefecture in western Japan. Since 2023, I have been living in Saitama Prefecture, a commuter area of Tokyo. I mainly collect records of British and American blues, rock, soul, jazz, zydeco, etc. from the 1960s onwards.
Recently, I have been introducing various types of record stores on UA-cam, from newly opened stores in Tokyo to long-established record stores with a long history, specialized record stores for jazz, Latin, punk, and classical music, to world-famous superstores in Tokyo. Please refer to the link details and locations in the video description.

Looks like a great store! And I ordered the album shown at 4:34!
Barrelhouse, Boogie & the Blues! I loved that jacket cover and I knew you would too! I loved the Judy Collins paper head at the entrance. His taste and mine are so aligned. He gave me complete run of the store for the camerawork.
Wow that record shop was gorgeous! {Although I got a little bit worried about those steep stairs with the shallow tread} I really enjoyed seeing the second and third floors with the lounge areas and everything so beautifully displayed with attention to aesthetic detail And café/record store/music publisher/bookshop is basically my dream space Walking around the neighborhood with the great old buildings and lovely shrine was so very pleasant and peaceful vibes Your camera work and technique is always stepping up as well Anyway thank you for a very pleasant hang out at the shop, the neighborhood and the shrine
Thank you!! I borrowed a smartphone gimbal from my friend. He used it out in the field documenting Japanese gardens. You can pick them up used on Yahoo! Auc if you’re curious. And yes, it’s completely upped my game. Thank you for noticing. Kawagoe reminds me of my walks around Okayama Station.
@ the neighborhood seems so pleasant and I was talking to my wife about "gosh, I would love to explore those areas" but it seems like such a daunting trip for me… One of these years though, I just keep getting better
Thanks for doing a record shop plus local area visit in one. So much to see in Japan. Never gets boring. I didn’t know about those historic clay sided houses will put it on the list for my next visit.
Kawagoe is a great day trip for people visiting Tokyo, as you don’t need to book a hotel if you visit for a day. Lots and lots of inexpensive restaurants and fantastic photo opportunities. Thanks for commenting always.
STONES RULE ❤
This was so enjoyable and fun. Harry looks like he'd be a scream to hang out with over a pint of Asahi and chat about his shop!
@@retromusings He is such a character! I had gone there in April and found the store closed. I’m so glad I tried again. I hope he likes my video. I can’t wait to show him.
wow X-Japan. That would be cool to own on vinyl. Really nice looking store. mr. Finglish (Bäd English Recs)
A friend of mine was a huge MERZBOW collector.....he probably had everything the artist produced....not my cuppa though!!!!
@@VagueRANT100 not my cuppa either but what a shop interior!?! Wild, right? I need to go back there again.
CUTE!!!
Always happy to hear your dispatches Mr. Rice Field
The next dispatch is as close to Okayama as Saitama can get. Very excited.
@ circling back to say "yeah it was very nice vibes and felt very familiar to your old neighborhood :-)"
Thanks for showing us another unique Japanese record store. Harry is a real character.
Usually when I’m alone with them, it’s much easier for me to make my pitch. I asked if it was OK to take photos and I showed him my YT Channel; but he was thrilled to show me that footage and when we exhausted the fact that our immediate needs were not in sync (he wanted to sell and I wanted to shoot), he launched into hambone mode. And of course I exasperated things by charming his manager who I don’t think was the woman singing with him in the video; but I have to go back & visit and find out for sure. There will be a Records Harry II someday…
Thanks for showcasing Harry. I tried to visit in August, but on that particular day he was closed and I couldn't return later.
The same thing happened to me back in April. My facade footage shows a closed store. When you visit again, you should definitely check him out. Either Harry’s or Daruma-ya; in terms of used record warehouses, those two are top of my list.
@@ricefieldrecords I will definitely visit these 2 stores in Dec, thank you.
Skankin Pickle....I've got one of their LPs,they're an american ska punk type band 👍
Interesting & fascinating as usual 👍👍👍
Someday, I’ll find a store that is amenable to me Live-streaming from and we can do a Q&A with the owner.
The man in the record store was certainly a happy chappie . That particular store looked a veritable aladins cave 👍👍👍
The single aisle couldn’t have been wider than 14”
@2:38 The Fool Guitar !! Cool !!
Im gonna say it again, i love these vids! Do you have a favorite go to store to sell/trade in your records?
@@deadite83 I typically sell my used records on Yahoo! Auctions. They allow for 10 photos to be included with the listing and I have a 100% approval rating from buyers. A buddy of mine flips records and he brings lots of 10 to Disk Union to sell. They offer an extra 10% payout to sellers with lots over 10. In terms of favorite stores; it depends. I’ll default and say Disk Union(s) but in fact, there isn’t a single bad record store in Japan.
Another great store! I am so jealous of the number of record stores around you. And thank you for putting price and condition notes. We often stop record store vids to see how things compare and you saved us from struggling to get the perfect pause to read the records😜
Thank you so much for always watching and acknowledging my intent. in the case of Japan, owners took such good care of their records; that the used shops are always overflowing. Additionally, over decades the records stayed in Japan. Also, the drivers for starting a shop in Japan were for sharing and neighborhood which is different than other countries. Isn’t it amazing they rate the Obi at that store? I was electric when I saw that. Usually it’s “has it/ doesn’t have it” or “ripped”.
I am always impressed with the care taken to beautifully sleeve every single item. What a cool concept for the store. Excellent vid as always! Love the convenience store item clips throughout for the complete picture. Thank you for bringing us along.
@@BeaSides my pleasure!
You delivered as promised thank you. They have been very active on socials so I was keen to get an unfiltered look in the store. I love the concept, because the combini is a community hub for many in Japan.
It’s pure fusion, isn’t it? The downstairs room was such a surprise.
@ricefieldrecords if time permits I may make a visit when I arrive in a few weeks.
@@stixxaus5373 He officially opens at 8 PM and has a lot of evening events. If you need any logistics help, shoot me an email by way of my about tab. Otherwise, have fun and happy shopping in Tokyo!
Cool store. But ain't no way I'm crawlin' around lookin' at records on the floor!
O, c'mon! No pain/no gain. I've brought kneepads with me to some warhouse record stores in Japan. BTW- I had to edit out my grunts and groans when I stood up from those deep squats. Did you see the DJ workshop in the final third of the video?
@@ricefieldrecords I did see the workshop. Not my sort of thing, but I do appreciate the skill.
Nice video, i would brought that Brian Wilson cd 👍
There was a Brian Wilson 7"; was there a single CD? I don't recall it. Will take another look. Is there much of a market for single CDs in the UK, Simon?
Ah, maybe it was the 7" single, the album too is called imagination, it looked like the cd cover, there's not much of a market for cd singles in the uk
Love ❤️ Charlie and his simple drum kit slamming away. So young all of them 60 years ago.
I really need to go to Japan!
Great Stuff .......though I can"t but help thinking that the Annette Funicello album cover could have been parodied by MAD MAGAZINE ....her "sensual" smile is eerily like that of MAD mascot ALFRED E NEUMAN🤣!!
@@VagueRANT100 I know! It was MAD who last made her relevant. Sometimes you see these objects in the wild and 50+ years have gone by and your brain gives up these memories. And they’re all over Japan. Yesterday I came across the soundtrack for Zabriskie Point in a cluttered shop. That movie had a huge impact on my older sister. I’d forgotten all about that. Happy to have you comment, David.
@@ricefieldrecords What twisted minds we children of the fifties must have! The only good thing about ZP was ROD TAYLOR as the rich businessman....my father was at the same high school as Rod in western Sydney at the same time!!
Oh MAN......HOME RUN!....box sets such as these are right in my ballpark!!!
@@VagueRANT100 I asked them to pull out their rarest and they obliged me for the purpose of this video.
@@ricefieldrecords You handled them with great care....the sign of a true connoisseur!
Wonderful records. Thanks for bringing them to us. I’ll mention the video/channel/store on our livestream. Looks like they ship world wide. Thx again.
Yes! Export is a specialty for them. One of the best independent classical record stores I have discovered to date. Thank you very much for mentioning them.
Are You a fan of fairport Convention an Richard Thompson?
@@davidmorgen4558 I am, 👍 yes
The place we rented for our trip to Japan was right down the street from Daruma-ya. The shop owners were super nice, let me practice my rudimentary Japanese although they also spoke English and struck up a nice conversation. I ended up finding some rare stuff there. Would absolutely go back. The one thing that struck me about Japan is how much appreciation they have for artists that America and Europe have forgotten or just generally don't give any attention to.
YES! It's truly amazing and they often study so much about the artists themselves. And they reissue the recordings, on CD and sometimes vinyl. And as collectors they are passionate and humble. Daruma-ya is one of the best inventories in Tokyo. I need to go to one of his evenings when he's serving microbrew beer. Thanks for your comment. I'm gonna pin it.
4:12 $9 sounds good for classic redneck jazz👂👏
8:41 original, ' finger' cover. Was retouched out after first press- taste of the time found it obscene
And it's priced at the equivalent of $30USD, is an original pressing and in VG+ condition. And THAT is Japan on any given day....
This store is right up my alley. I'll be visiting Tokyo in a couple of weeks, and have used several of your videos to help plan my vinyl shopping travels.
Fantastic! So good to know. Have a great record shopping experience in Tokyo.
Sorry to ignore the visuals but WHAT was that music playing in the background? Excellent groove!
First track: “How Long Before I'm Gone” by Ten Wheel Drive w/Genya Raven from their second record entitled Brief Replies. Second track: :”Mad Dog” by Lee Michaels from his record entitled “Barrel”, Third track, I don’t know. Thank you for watching and commenting!
@@ricefieldrecords Many thanks. It's the Lee Michaels track. Must check him out!
Excellent work as always!
and Thank You as always. Seriously.
Holy shit I knew great White did it and knew it was a cover but I didn't know who had done it first and frankly it's pretty groovy
I just got back from Japan and hit up Hal's Records on your recommendation. While I didn't find my ultimate grail, I was floored to be able to pick up stuff from some pretty obscure artists at decent prices. Small but mighty. Thanks for the video!
My pleasure! Sorry you did not find your grail on this last adventure. I hope you have another chance to visit again.
Nice one!
Thank you! Cheers!
Love it! Thank you for these vlogs.
You are so welcome!
Great tour!!! It amazes me how clean and tidy even the used stores are. Places like Ella are lovely (even down to the chair design), but seem stuffy to me. LOVE the murals and vibe of Flash. We watch lots of record store vids and Dave is often commenting that it would be awesome to have the community support for a tiny, specialized store here, but I think we are just too far from a major city to see that as a sustainable option where we live.
Thank you always! Ella has other locations that I’ve yet to visit. They have a completely different vibe. Wait till you see one I’m editing now. It’s wild in terms of the store setting. I’ll give you a hint: it’s in a bodega
Caught your epic show on RG Jimmy made a fool of himself..truly embarrassing.. Wants to get away from drama but now spends him time at RG? Makes ZERO sense I wouldn’t waste another second on that Lastman nonsense You’re better than all that Michael We all get caught up in these disputes and trust me they are a total waste of energy Thanks Michael
I was in Jet Set when we visited Japan
I have yet to come across another store in Japan that is 100% new records. If I do, I'll make a video. Thanks for your comment.
@@ricefieldrecords I love watching your videos. Makes me want to go back. This year it's England/Liverpool again and then 2026 Japan.
You obviously checked out my video of Vinyl in Shinjuku 😉 Incredible, right? Thanks for the kudos. Very much appreciated!
@@ricefieldrecords yes.
Hi, sorry I missed this at the time - I just got a notification now, a year after the event! Have subbed.
Thanks for the sub!
This explains why Waxed hasn't been to Japan , besides being financially strapped, there's no estate sales for financial gain
@@arniezanzibar5123 Indeed! I shan’t be his tour guide. Welcome Arnie!
I went to Flash Disc last year, not as a collector but to find some interesting 7 inch sleeves to put on my wall back home. I found some so was very happy. Thanks.
What a great tour of Shimokitazawa, we were there in August (braving the summer heat). Masa at Flash Disc Ranch is a wonderful human, I visit him every time we are in Japan. I did notice the trend of cafe/listening bars popping up in our last visit, it is interesting. I found a Combini-themed record store online, so I am keen to check it out. Again thanks for making the content for others to enjoy.
Thanks always for your comment contributions on my channel. With regards to that Combini-themed record store, I will have a nice video surprise for you in a few weeks. Stay tuned.
Thanks for a grand tour. Very interesting stuff.
Thank you Mariusz. I had a lot of fun with this one.
A Dylan store! I need to go there and buy me a case or two of Dylans! I'm about all out of Dylans! They wear out after a while, doncha know. The aesthetic of Ella Vintage is fabulous. I love it. A whole section for Bonnie and Delaney? Heck, I know folks of our vintage who have no idea who they are!
Delaney and Bonnie never get their own section, so I was pumped, Uncle Dan. I let out a big hee haw in the store and a couple of the shoppers made a beeline for the exit. You can always get a gift pack of Dylan's or a gift card. Operators are standing by. Se habla Espanol. I hope the Ella Vintage people are receptive for a vee dee oh.
A store selling Dylans? I need to go there and buy me a case or two of Dylans! I'm just about all out of Dylans! They wear out after a while, ya know. Great video, as always!
A comment so nice, he wrote it twice!
@@ricefieldrecords I had to edit it . . .
Haaaa lovely… makes me want to come back to Japan asap…
You mentioned visiting rural area in Japan. There are some wild record stores there too. I've seen pictures of one in a log cabin style structure and even in those places; the records are in good condition and sometimes graded....but it's going to be vintage stuff. Cheers Fred and thanks always for commenting.
Beatnick Filmstars? What the heck! Nice channel.
Lovely chilled out crate dig Michael. Jetset self released albums look interesting.
Thank you, Mike! It’s a very tiny space. Maybe 100 sq feet or so in area.
