Makin' Bacon | Smoking Meat, Firewood and Chainsaw Carving
Well, the weather is still on it's kick of being fussy but that can't stop us from continuing on with spring chores. We recently made another batch of pork belly into several pounds of bacon on the smoker as well as started plugging away at restocking the wood shed with firewood for next year. John also finished creating his latest work of art - a chainsaw carving of a great blue heron which he donated in support of our local community. It was able to raise an astonishing $1,000! A huge thank you to that winning bidder on supporting the community and winning his beautiful carving.

Mother nature really can't get it together! We've been having beautifully warm and sunny days followed by extreme wind storms, snow and multiple power outages. In this video we experience our third power outage in 3 days, pull the taps on our maple trees and wash up all of the pails. We also get up to a few other things like starting some seeds that I like to start indoors as well as smoke some...

The bucket brush is the bomb!
We love it! Never going back
It seems the weather has been topsy-turvy all over this year. We had some snow, days of rain, a nice little stretch of sun, and now cold rains have returned. Looking good...one step at a time! Have yourselves an awesome weekend.
It really has been! We had a beautiful day at work on Wednesday and the past 2 days here now have been steady rain with zero breaks at all. They’re even calling for a few cm of snow overnight and another potential wind storm. Hoping that light is at the end of the tunnel soon. Thanks for watching and likewise!
Great video thanks to both of you guys here from Ontario Canada ❤️❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦🇨🇦😎
Thanks for watching!
Adding more stove stack pipes make for a hotter fire, better boil
Good video, showed different pictures of the sugar shack ,and equipment
Thanks for watching!
We loved sharing sap secrets and THANK YOU for letting us use your RO unit, game changer! Every year one improvement (big or small), that's the fun of it.
Wonderful...you know you're Canadian when you have a few iconic Canadian Tire buckets on hand in the sugar shack! Oh man, I can taste it now!!
You bet! The first year we started doing maple syrup all of our pails were Canadian Tire buckets! We purchased 25 of them and ran hoses down into them with lids. Maple syrup is always a great memory making, sociable and iconic hobby for many! Thanks for watching
@@OurLifeLakeside Indeed, my last few years of teaching grade 7/8 my class tapped a few of the trees on the school property and made syrup...didn't end up with a whole lot, but I think the kids made some pretty amazing memories.
Great video John and Rainey it was last Tuesday was 21 degrees Celsius here in Ontario Canada I thought it was spring here but I was wrong Wednesday it was - 3 degrees Celsius what a change in temperature and today march 16 2024 it was -8 degrees Celsius we haven’t had snow since November that is crazy
Thanks for watching! It was a very mild winter in Ontario for sure. We got a couple big snow storms here but the snow never lasted for long. It actually has been snowing here all day today! But it won’t stick.
Buy a sawmill and turn the logs into lumber softwood is great for building build yourself a sugar shack out of all the lumber you get
A sawmill is definitely on the future list! Just not in the cards right now. We have an Alaskan mill for small projects and we sell off any good saw logs to people that do have mills. For now though we don’t have one ourselves though so the softwood gets donated to whoever can use it for outdoor burners, campfire wood or we sell the saw logs. John also is a chainsaw carver so some get used for that! Thanks for watching.
