Honest Review Of Lutterloh Pants Pattern

This video is a review of the Lutterloh pants pattern found in supplement 306. For size reference, my waist measures at 35 inches. My butt measures at 42 inches. I have received some advice on how to fix the short crotch, and I do plan to do another video using the same pattern to sew some shorts using the adjusted pattern to see if the crotch problem can be fixed.

On commercial sewing patterns you don't go with the pattern size you chose, you go ofthe finished measurements either on the bottom on the pattern envelope or on they're printed on the patten its self .... if you cut them out from the sizes on the top ... they will be way too big ... thats just a guide for buying the pattern

For someone who doesn't sew pants very often the Lutterloh method was an excellent choice! I would recommend that if you want to sew another pair, the crotch needs a bit of adjusting. I'd add about 1/2" to the "Rise" and they will fit a lot better. That was one measure that the Lutterloh system seems not to use and yet that is so important. Take your tape measure and run it from where you want the waist to sit down through your legs and where you want the pant waist to be in the back. That is the amount of the rise. Or measure the "rise" in a pair of your pants that fits well and doesn't give you "camel toe" when you stand straight. You are doing very well with your sewing so I sure wouldn't be discouraged in any way. The first pair of pants that I made were pajama bottoms and I can't tell you how many times I had to rip out the seems as I got the legs mixed up!! My mother, who was an excellent seamstress and pattern designer, had me chalkmark all the fronts which helped me get the pieces in the right places. I like to repeat a pattern almost right away if it is a wardrobe staple, so I can incorporate all my notes where I maybe went wrong or could make it easier for the next pair to come together. For pants and jackets, I've gone to a stretch lining and I've found it more comfortable. Keep up the good work and let us see your next project! It's refreshing to see sewing as it really is instead of like a TV show where it all comes together without a hitch.

finally an honest review! i was thinking about getting a kit but i am new to sewing. This made me decide to wait till i am more advanced before attempting trying to sew garments with out proper instructions. It seems great to make your own patterns but if your new to sewing i can already feel the frustration. Esp with the cost of fabric and the cost of the kit. thank you for making up my mind.

While the back is a good fit, the front crotch is not good. This confirms to me the defect of the system.

Yes! I agree. I would love it if Lutterloh would re-release patterns from each decade. I have the same desire to recreate fashion from popular TV shows like "Mad Men" and "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel".

If you've never changed a needle before, then the needle may have simply been too dull (v. material to thick) to penetrate. Needles, like rotary blades, have a project life. (And when I started sewing, I didn't really understand that!). And needles that break can be an eye hazard. I need my reading glasses to sew now (sigh), and a good thing as they have deflected more than one broken needle tip. I have the Lutterloh system, but I have not had a chance to make anything yet with my crazy work schedule.

Just take your time and go step-by-step. You will get it tovwhere you know yourvown tricks. It just takes practice.

Why didn't you make a muslin first? I've learned to ALWAYS do that in fabric close to what I'm going to make whatever clothing item from. Then I know which adjustments to make. Takes a little longer, but then you have a pattern you can keep & reuse

Which pant pattern is right for you? This depends on what you want. Do you like wearing loose pants? Or rather tight ones? For which occasion are you sewing? Do you want your pants for sleep wear? Do want want to wear it at home? Or at work? Or for sports? Or only on special occasions? For all these cases you will probably need separate patterns. You said you were so mad about the pyjama pants. But i have to say for sleep wear these pyjama pants are perfect. The loose fit is intentional for sleep wear. If you want to use a pyjama pattern for day wear, then you might use 1 or 2 sizes smaller. The Lutterloh pants fit you perfectly, they are quite snug in the waist and hip area, this looks very good on you. However I could imagine that the pants become uncomfortable after some hours of wearing. And the wrinkles in the front could mean that the front crotch is a little bit too short. But nevertheless these pants look great on you. :-)

Unfortunately in my Lutterloh kit there are no instructions for anything so you have to have sewing knowledge to use the system. But you did a great job with trial and error...You might want to check out some of the online sewing schools....that's what I did. Mimi G has a great one that I'm still in at the moment...I also looked into the beginner sewing school from " Sew Over It" All the sewing schools are really affordable, Mimi G's in 9.00 a month and you work at your own pace. She is a great teacher too..I have learned so much with these courses and have worked my way from beginner to intermediate now...check them out, I think you'd like them.

I just got my Lutterloh set, plastic templates and their large book with 280 patterns. I am impressed with the quality of the materials. I was amazed at how quickly I received this set once I ordered it. It was delivered on a Sunday by DHL carriers. I've been a long time sewer, as I am a 72 year old grandmother and am anxious to make my first outfit using this method. I am not able to buy a dress off the rack that has a defined waistline, as I have a longer bodice and always have had to lengthen the top part of a dress as well as make the shoulders a bit narrower. I think I will really enjoy using their 'patterns". Having so many patterns in one book will also allow me to sew for my significant other as well.

The system assumes you have a basic knowledge of pattern construction. Ike everything else one needs to do a mock up and tweak before cutting. You should also take other measurements of your waist an crotch length just to be doubly sure. Even when you draft your own pattern you might have to make adjustments just before sewing.

Good for you attempting a not-so-easy garment as a novice. Nobody mentioned the front crotch winkles that NEVER should point to that part of your anatomy. That needs some adjustment but the fit across your bum looks great. Also a big tip is to press your seams after you sew them for a guaranteed professional, not- homemade look. Keep going. Practice does make perfect.

thank you for the video. I had just ordered the system so was interested in your comments about it. I love sewing and came across this on you tube. It is expensive but not if it works well as they say it does. I rang a UK number which I found on the website and spoke to a Mr Lutterloh who explained lots of things to me. I asked him how it would accommodate personal idiosyncrasies for example I have a curved high back and sloping shoulders. He said you have to make a muslin and alter it to fit. I bought Surefit designs at the beginning of lockdown last year as I wanted to learn pattern drafting and I made several patterns and then loads of muslins but now I have a good fit. The patterns offered by SFD are really old fashioned but I have been drafting my own. I am hoping this system will be better than that. Many thanks again. I have subscribed and will keep checking in

One great tip I learned in bra-making -which has lots of little bits- is to use tiny different coloured dot stickers to keep pieces labeled and to help with matching up seams. With larger items you can use post-its, tape, different types of pins. Try not to worry about sewing mistakes. If they still fit and flatter I often leave them in now, so I can “prove” that I make my own fabulous clothes.
