"What Could Go Wrong?" by Cennydd Bowles
Technology ethicist and interaction designer, Cennydd Bowles, comes to the University of Washington for a guest lecture. After a range of embarrassing and sometimes dangerous slip-ups, technology companies have been quick to defend themselves. These impacts weren’t intentional, they argue: they were mere unforeseen side-effects of innovation. Perhaps. But technologists weren’t exactly looking too hard. The industry's resolute faith in progress has meant the few voices of internal dissent have often gone unheeded. Now a dramatic AI leap forward poses even greater opportunities and dangers. Can designers and technologists anticipate the social and ethical impacts of their work before they occur? And are we ready for what they might find?
Cennydd Bowles is a technology ethicist and interaction designer, author of Future Ethics, and a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Elon University, North Carolina. Cennydds views on the ethics of emerging technology and design have been quoted by Forbes, WIRED, and The Wall Street Journal, and he has spoken on responsible innovation at Facebook, Stanford University, and Google.

The Art of Living in the Nuclear Anthropocene: Sasha Welland Katz Distinguished Lecture
Переглядів 2497 місяців тому
"The Art of Living in the Nuclear Anthropocene" is a story of kinship, grief, and place that asks an impossible question. Is there a connection between a sister’s illness and Manhattan Project nuclear waste in North St. Louis? It is a story of commingled histories of harm that plume outward, across boundaries engineered to separate and contain, and of community activism challenging norms of “se...

In 2018, the Maple Fire burned more than 3000 acres of Washington State’s Olympic National Forest, making national news. Federal prosecutors alleged that a local man, Justin Wilke, started the blaze while removing a beehive from a tree he planned to steal. Justin, prosecutors claimed, is a tree poacher. Late that summer night, Justin was in pursuit of figured Big Leaf Maple, a rare wood coveted...
How to Write a DEI Statement in Only 50 Years: Shawn Wong Katz Distinguished Lecture
Переглядів 270Рік тому
UW Professor of English Shawn Wong has been working on his DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) statement for 50 years (38 years at the UW) and is almost finished. He began writing it when, as an undergraduate, he was told that Asian American literature did not exist, that his writing had too much style to be written by him, that his first students could not get English credit for taking his Asia...

I haven't listened to the full lecture, but I'm somewhat confused by his 'three conditions' for democracy, which he appears to define as Liberty (speech, association), Equality (each voice heard), and High Standing (?). It would seem to me that he really meant: Liberty, Education (ability to reason and deliberate), Equality (of standing, dignity, - each voice heard).

Do you agree that we are all living in 'anthropocene'. Justify your answer, while referring to the works of Donna Haraway and Anna Tsing.

Thank you for sharing. This was beautiful. I want so much for all the earthworks, mounds and the history of this land to be protected and respected. There should be more done to preserve and more education and knowledge shared about the peoples of this land. The ancient and wonderful people that live and died on this land and their descendants that still live. We have lost so much, I hope we don't lose any more, but rather discover more.

There are four different theories about how the universe was born before the Big Bang The problem is that we need only one theory We need one theory that explains what happened before the Big Bang The first theory is the collision theory of cosmic membranes This theory says that the birth of this universe was caused by the explosion caused by the collision of membranes every trillion years The second theory is that the universe is the hologram world It is that the universe is a stereoscopic image of black hole information This means that our lives and our self-consciousness are just an illusion We are just an illusion and not a reality ‏ ‏ ‏The third theory says that the universe is just a bubble between an infinite number of bubbles of random inflation ‏ ‏ ‏The fourth theory says that the Great Bang created our world 14 billion years ago of white hole energy ‏ ‏ ‏‏But is there scientific evidence of the birth of the universe from this white hole? ‏ ‏ ‏ ‏The Continuing Problem There are four different theories about the birth of the universe ‏ ‏ ‏ ‏You must create a new satellite ‏ ‏ ‏‏In order to discover the oldest light in the universe ‏ ‏ ‏In order to discover the signs (Waves of initial gravity) ‏ ‏ ‏In order to provide scientific evidence on the validity of the ‏theory of inflation bubbles ‏We need to create a number of new satellites dedicated to exploring scientific evidence ‏ ‏ ‏ ‏To confirm the hologram theory or evidence of the collision theory of those cosmic membranes ‏ ‏ ‏Or evidence supporting the hypothesis of inflationary cosmic bubbles الكون
