I work on gear. I like vacuum tubes and guitars. I am both a dork and a nerd, but I take the quality of my work seriously.

This amp is an absolute blast to play through, and aside from a bit of head scratching it was a pleasure to work on.

I've been waiting to get the chance to work on an old Silvertone like this for ages! So excited to get this thing serviced! I just signed up for Amazon Affiliates program and I need all the help I can get. If you are wondering what kind of tools I use to service this stuff every day I'll be adding links to products I use and recommend! It doesn't cost you any more and it helps me out! Below is ...

There's a lot more to be said on several of these subjects. Just stuff I think about a lot and decided to toss in a video along with some cool amps.
Final Ibanez TSA15H Modifications?!
Переглядів 706Рік тому
After months of playing with the circuit in my spare time I think I finally landed on the sound I was hoping to get out of this head! I’ll be working on the schematics to reflect these mods in case anyone wants to (AT THEIR OWN RISK!) try this on their own amp!

I am the builder who did the assembly work on this guitar. Some people asked for a demo. I never meant to share this with anyone but the OP so it’s not really a proper demo but will give an idea of how it sounds.

This was a pretty standard cleanup for a customer. I wanted to do a time lapse and just talk about what was involved. Appearance by Buckley the doj, and songs by....me! Slow Burn and Hard Times copywrite 2020 Ryan Verthein Enjoy! I hope you like it!
From Parts to Player, A Study on Fun!

I started building this guitar as a bit of a workout. I wanted to see what I could build and how well I could get it to play...so rummaged through my parts and what you see here is that build. Song used throughout video is "Poverty Line" by Plastic Windows, a band I drummed in as well as engineered the recording.
my local guitar store has a bunch of old fender amps right now. i wish i didn’t just buy a car so i could buy one. i need a bassman head to match my cab.
Oof, when you ran both channels. Whoa whoa wee woh
@@tylerevans1700 It’s real, real good. Needs to find a home though.
I had the 12 cab with the brains on top . Loud as hell
That's a real beauty of an amplifier, born in 1948, still alive and delivering the sweet tone, awesome !!!
I asked some questions on the marshall forum on the thread about this. Thanks
I've tried singing like this when people do stupid things on the road. It works to lessen the rage.
Sounds good tweed-era sound!
"Why would they do anything that made sense?" They did, and your ignorance is astounding. The 6cg7's are dual triode but have a different pinout from 12ax7's. They're your phase inverters here. Very common in hifi amps, and also seen in most Orange amps. The small tube is a 6au6 that's used in the tremolo circuit. UA-cam doesn't need yet another smarmy know-nothing fuck bitching about amp designs they don't understand. Read the schematic before recording video.
If you whispered this it would be a great ASMR video.
Wow great job! Perhaps you could post a schematic of the original amp design and then indicate on the schematic the changes you made. That would be a big help : )
did you compile the final list of mods? was thinking of getting mine done and would be great to have it all in one place as reference..
I did but I never did love it even after the mods. I ended up completely removing the circuit and used the transformers to build a JCM800 with 6V6’s in it. There’s probably a better middle ground in the mods for these. The biggest issue I had after the mods was there was a LOT of gain REALLY early. I could have maybe figured that out but ultimately decided to go handwired.
@@ryanintopeka fair enough.. i may just move the loop to after the channel controls and use it as it is.. i get why they wanted to make it like a "pedal loop" but i tend not to use pedals much for my dirt, but would find a 6v6 power stage useful in such a portable head.. I have a modulus 5e3 kit to build anyway so not all that bothered about vintage circuit correctness in the TSA, I am just generally a fan of 6v6s and its slim pickings when that's your jam
@@stuartbradbury944 I feel that! The JCM800 with the 6V6s is pretty cool. All that chimey great sound at a reasonable volume. Doing about 18 watts.
When the electrolyte breaks down and the layers of foil short together, the failure is catastrophic and the cost of repair is high. Forget the nostalgia and change the damn things! Collectors are weird. They belong in a rubber room, preferably with double or even triple padding. Go ahead and rant about this to your heart's content. Youre not only right, you might even save a few amps.
At 6:32 you state that filter caps block DC and allow AC signal to pass through but that's not so with filter caps: they smooth the rectified AC (which is rippled DC) by storing voltage during the upward cycle and releasing it on the downward to smooth it out. The caps you're talking about are signal caps (a.k.a. blocking caps) that pass AC and block DC.
Yes. I ramble sometimes and miss details. But you are correct!
Excellent video, thank you. Peter
nice!
Great Video- Tones are awesome. So what speaker and pickup models were you using? Is there any documentation of your mod process? Thanks
I honestly cannot remember what cab it was. The Strat has some hotter than usual Mexican Standard pickups and a cheap Gretsch humbucker in the bridge. I have since done even deeper mods on this amp and I think I am going to end up likely building a full on JTM clone circuit into it on turret board.
Thanks for quick reply . Good luck on your JTM board; I too like JTM tone/feel. My goal would be to come closest to Super / Super Reverb
Thank you for the info! Just picked one up on a steal.
Man, can almost feel the strings vibration through my earphones! Beautiful! I want to make these mods to mine as well 🤜🏻👑🤛🏻
I'm considering attempting these mods but I don't have experience modifying amplifiers. I am also considering a retube as I know the stock tubes are chinese and of dubious quality. Would adding quality tubes remedy the issue of the amp being sterile-sounding at lower volumes?
Not really. I haven’t put much thought into which part made the biggest tonal difference. I really need to add an addendum to this mod. Just this past week I pulled the chassis out again and did a few more little mods - namely pulling the little bass/treble/volume tone stack board out and changing all of the values on that board to match JTM45 spec, which is essentially what this mod is. I do have to say that since doing these mods there is nearly no clean anymore. Partially because the Volume pot on this amp has the wrong taper, and potentially also the slope resistor. But boy does it ever kick ass now. Haha
@@vertheinguitarworks3844 thanks for the fast reply! Given that I really want to preserve the clean sound , I'll probably start by putting in quality preamp tubes and go from there. I'll report the results in the comments here and probably in that thread on the Marshall forum. The clean channel is where this amp shines and since it takes pedals so well and I have some good ODs, I can always go that route for higher gain. Thanks again for all of the detailed information, it really cleared things up!
I found this video just after reading your contributions to the Marshall forum thread that you mentioned. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this and thanks for the schematic on the forum! Love the nail polish too!
Great video. Have you ever considered selling a kit, with all the parts needed for your mod, a schematic, and instructions? I just got an Ibanez TSA15 and it needs to wake up. Keep up the good work.
I’ve got a long post over on the marshall forum about it with a schematic. I could potentially come up with a parts kit but I’m weary about supplying it to other people when I don’t know what their skill level is. Modding on PC board amps takes some real patience and care.
Picking up a used TSA15H next month! Can't wait to have it slaughtered and modded! Excellent video I will search for the thread in the forum and try and find schematics Thank you for your work 🫡🙏🏻
Hi Did you get it? Any thoughts about it?
@@dimitris70I got the amp but I haven't had time to look up the schematics and/or start tinkering the the amp yet. What about you?
@@primaballerina84 okay I'm semi beginner and have a Rolland cube 30x for practice I'm ok with that amp now, don't want high gain Sometime i will try/buy a tube amp The tsa15h seems a nice clean amp But the od channel seems a little weak?? Sorry English is not my first
@@dimitris70 Indeed. The gain channel is more of an overdrive vintage style sound. If you want real distortion for hard rock and metal etc I would go for a different amp. There are many high gain combos available with decent clean channel sounds as well 👍🏻
Ive got a NOS pair of RCA 12AX7'S and 6V6's I want to swap into my TSA15 combo. Just dont know if it has to be re-biased for that though. Does anyone here know?
I would definitely check and set the bias for proper dissipation. I can’t remember if there’s a bias test point inside (been months and months since I’ve been in it now.) but there probably is.
@@ryanintopekaI havent been into it, to see if it has a way to adjust it or not. When i purchased it, i was under the impression that it didnt have, but since i got, seems like ive heard it does. So i have no idea. I know nothing about electronics. I have a 70's solid state Peavey and a 2014 Blackstar stereo amp. The Ibanez is the only tube amplifier Ive had. So im completely ignorant of what to do with it. Wish I could go back in time, and instead of getting the Ibanez, I'd have just forked out a few more dollars, and got a Blues Jr. They are nearly double the price now, than they were 5 or 6 years ago.
@@1980bwc I feel you. They’re really cool but they definitely have some issues. There is a bias pot inside but mine was glued so well it was immovable.
Hi! This is a great video!, I have an ibanez TSA30 and I need to replace the output transformer, do you know which transformer could be used as a replacement ? It does not have to be the original, just be the proper one for 30watts, thank you!
Nice work, I'd love to see the revised schematic
Did you think about changing the stock Power Tubes?

man! nice!
Nice vídeo!! Wish mine has more volume. I really like the fact that is clear all the way and gets bolder as it gets louder, but it could me more louder. I dont want it to have an earlier breakup, dont want that tweed character. What kind of mod you suggest??
There are a few things but the biggest thing is that these amps have no negative feedback loop which cleans up the signal as the value of the resistor in the loop increases. I finished more mods this morning actually and am finally fully happy with it. I am working on a schematic and a write-up explaining how to do the mods.
@@vertheinguitarworks3844 allright!! Thanks!! Really looking forward for that write-up. Nice work here. Keep'em coming!
Nice video. Amp sounds way better than stock. I've been researching mods for this amp for a couple days so the timing is impeccable. I'm taking my 1st steps into the amp modification world so I wont burden you with my inquiries. Although, if you have any documentation of your specific mods, I wouldn't mind having a look. Btw, there is nothing wrong with your speech. Great tone and playing. And I dig the silver nails. Thanks for sharing your experience and insight.
I did make a long post on the Marshall forum about it the other day. It’s in a thread about getting closer to a Princeton tone in “The Workbench” area. If you have any questions you can email me!
@@vertheinguitarworks3844 I actually had that forum open in another tab from the other night. Hit refresh and theres your post. I finally found the complete schematic but I've only ever built one pedal so I'm trying to educate myself a bit more to avoid frying the amp and somewhat more importantly; myself. I appreciate your offer to correspond via email and I may take you up on it because the improvement you've achieved puts this amp on another level.
Ryan, this is good stuff. Please continue!
