Is there to figure out the alcohol percentage if we don’t have a hydrometer??
Does it matter if it’s dried or fresh?
If it is dried or powdered make sure it has both the mycelium and fruiting bodies but all the figuring she does is removed if you use powdered you can stick to the 1:5 method but you will still double pull
Have you written any books? If so please advise
Thank you so much for explaining the alcohol ratio
Does the math change if your mushrooms are dehydrated?
I realize this is an older video. I have just now discovered it. I am new to herbalism this year. I’ve been hunting and preserving wild mushrooms for years now. Specifically lions mane. I have sense broadened that to include more variety and plant matter. Thus the reason for becoming an herbalist. I’m not any where near the nerdy wife you are but I 100% am beginning my journey to be. I love it but am so rusty on the math. Ha! My point I actually want to make is that I truly appreciate how you present the video. You are a FANTASTIC teacher. I haven’t seen anyone explain it the way you have so that beginners like me can understand and grow. It’s exactly what I needed. Thank you!
Does it matter if someone starts with the water extract first vs the alcohol extraction?
love it thank you!
Interesting❤
I really appreciate the way you explained in this video. Is there any herb or herbal medicine good for anal fistula, if you know please share with us. Thanks
Try sitz bath.
I don’t like how your calling it a plant 😢
I don’t either
Awesome video 🙌
I probably missed it. But what was your calculation for amount of water to use when beginning the hotwater decocktion? Great video overall, very well articulated! Beautiful control of the English language.
I get this question a lot so I added this info into the description
Now this is how you make a video ! Right to the point, very informative , and well explained .
Thank you! I appreciate that!
Can i give my 4 year old cleavers to clear his throat of mucus or any advice on herbs to move the lymphatic system thank you
Throat mucus I’d use elecampane root, mullein, licorice for any irritation. Tea is best for kids but you can also give them small doses of tincture.
@@HerbNerdSchool thank you😊
I just found your channel - it's wonderful, thank you for sharing so much valuable information!
@@DeborahSophia369 hi! Happy you found me, and welcome!!
Dehydrate it first, then grind it up in a coffee or herb grinder, then put in the alcohol solvent, and spend $80 on an ultrasonic cleaner, takes 90 minutes instead of two weeks.
Hello, and thank you for sharing the information. My question is also about the Dynamic Mini Pro homogenizer you referenced. There are a few homogenizers to choose from in Dynamic; can you specify which model you refer to in the video? AC560, MX069.1, MX070.15,... Thank You.
In Arizona we dont have fresh Comfrey. Can I use dried Comfrey?
Wondering the same thing. Also, what the ratio would be then? Were you able to figure it out?
Yes, works great!
Great question. For dry herbs it’s usually anywhere from 1:3 to 1:5
Great tutorial! Thanks so much. Been wondering for years about ABV, ratios and the math.
If I’m making this tincture, & my Lions Mane is dehydrated would I use half the volume in liquid? Thank you 🙏
She speaks clearly. She gets straight to the point. Take notes UA-camrs : THIS is how you do an instructional video!!!
@@kennetharmbruster awe thank you!!!!☺️ I have get a lot of negative comments so this is very well received 🤙🏼💐
Excellent content. Thanks a lot. How long do you simmer the LM in hot water (at a max of 175 F degrees right)? Do you have to stir the preparation during the 4 hours?
Anyone using Ultrasonic machine (bath or probe) to exctract both alcohol and water solubles?
Do you have to shake your tincture (considering it's already in the 60ml glass) every time before taking?
Fantastic presentation great teacher 👏😁
I double extract all of my tinctures whether it’s an herb or fungi to get down to the % of alcohol I prefer I vacuum distill to remove the alcohol. For people that may read this and don’t know distilling under a vacuum drastically lowers the temperature needed to remove the alcohol.
Thanks for this video. You started with 580 g of fresh mushrooms. If I start with 200 g of dried lions mane, what ratio do I use to determine milliliters of water? Ex. 1:2 ratio of 200g is 200g X 2 = 400 ml of water?
I have read in a few places that alcohol extraction will deteriorate the potency of the Beta-glucans, whereas hot water extraction won't. On the other hand the single water extraction step will not make the erpenes and phenolic compounds bio available. What is your opinion on this ?
I read the same thing in different places. The consensus is that one should do the hot water extraction 1st then the alcoholic one afterwards(then I suppose they should be mixed when in liquid form). Some use two different batches of mushrooms, one for each method on extraction(costly). Ultra-sonification at low temperature is claimed to extract both types of compounds at once. However the proper ultrasonic equipment is price prohibitive to produce one's own consumption.
What a nice video!!! ❤
What would the daily dose be for that solution, where do you store, and what is the shelf life? Thank you...
1-2 ml/dropperfuls 3x a day
@@HerbNerdSchool what is the shelf life?
Can you not just eat the mushroom for the benefits? Do you have to make a tincture?
Yes, absolutely! That’s probably best!
Soon as you said »put it in the bowl » I started laughing because she did exactly what my son did when I said the same thing. We forgot to say gently. Thanks for the laugh 😂❤😊
Haha!! Totally didn’t even cross my mind and then an instant after, it was so obvious 😂 glad I’m not alone!
what is the name of the homogenizer?
Very nice video. I hate to be picky, but I think you were supposed to add 875 ml of pure water to the 750 of decoction. You want to more than half the alcohol %. The volume of diluent should be more than the original decoction/menstruum/effluent. That is why your final hydrometer reading is at 35%, not 30%. Sorry, I used to be a Chemistry teacher. :)
I just purchased this today...do you go by the external temperature instead of the internal temperature instead? Like is the external temperature a more reliable reflection of the sample's temperature?
Herb Nerd Thanks for the video, is very interesting can you give more info, like prices and how long is going to take to complete the course, and so on. Thanks
For decoction do i need distilled water or tap/filter water is ok?
All of those are fine.
I want to make a his for my son that has a brain injury but he is only 5 years old. Can I use organic glycerin instead of alcohol and if not, would this be safe to give him?
Great explanation. However I find 15% alc to be the best for tinctures. I make a normal dual extract using 500g of dried fruit, 1l Ethanol and 1l water. Soxhlet extract with each for 8 hours and then I distill off all the ethanol and weigh the total decoction and add 15% total volume ethanol. Leaving a pretty good extraction with 15% alcohol content. This can be replaced by vegetable glycerine if you do not like alcohol
Thank you so much for this video. I’m in the process of making a lions mane tincture using freeze dried mushrooms and I didn’t know how to do the math
Would love to know how working with a dried product would be different
Great video! One question -- wouldn't the alcohol basically just destroy the b-glucan? So hericenones, erinacenes and whatever other alcohol soluble compounds would be available but not the water soluble. Also, doesn't the lions mane have to be grown on wood?
Most guides I see say to use 99% alcohol
Hey, Brilliant video, well explained, very clear and easy to follow! Thank you for this! You are the first one I found in loong time! I have 2 questions, there is so much confusion out there about this, and I trust you can bring light on this. 1. Fresh or dried? 2. 95% or less is enough? What exactly are we extracting with the alcohol?' 3. What is the equision then for double extraction Using fresh lion´s mane I understand it is essential to use 95% alcohol or else it will be like trying to extract the components in beer. Btw, what are those chemical we are juicing out? Is it possible to use dried lion´s mane (does it still have all the goodness?) and extract it in vodka (is it strong enough to extract those chemicals?)? Let´s say it is possible. How do I get to a double extraction? Using the same equision? I assume, the % will go down to 35 already during the 2 weeks. How do I have space then to introduce water extract into my tincture? Is it possible at all? Thanks a lot! This will solve the last bit of the mushroom-riddle! :)
1:5 is the final mix ratio I should be aiming for or just the alcohol extact ?
Thank you for showing what you do, i just harvested some and put it in a jar with water to go put in the sun. Kinda like sun tea. It's what The Lord told me to do to deal with my swelling. My old place had so many 😭 I'm so sad
so what was the "pressing part"???
You're right it isn't magic.... But it's definitely not the way a chemist would do it. Without complicating things too much.... first instead of using a press, you should use vacuum filtration. After good filtration you should put everything through a rotovap to get rid of your solvents (alcohol and water) only after you get rid of your solvents, you will know how much you have actually extracted (otherwise you're just guessing) and then you can dissolve your extract into the appropriate dilutant at the appropriate percentages. If you're not doing this and you are giving it to actual medical patients you are negligent and quite possibly doing more harm than good. Now that you, know please do better!
For an o/w emulsion and for w/o, how long do you have to mix the IKA ULTRA TURRAX 25T basic? I just bought one on Ebay and I don't know how long it takes to get the smallest particles possible, for a stable emulsion. I know that stability depends on several factors, but now I am referring to the mixing time. Thank you!
