Living in BELLINGHAM versus SEATTLE | Should I MOVE to Bellingham or Seattle?🤔
Living in Bellingham Versus Seatlle! Should I Move To Bellingham or Seattle?
Are you considering a move to Washington State but unsure whether to choose Bellingham or Seattle? No worries! In today’s episode, we’ll explore the key differences between these two vibrant cities to help you determine which one could be your ideal new home.
🔎Here are the Key Difference of Bellingham and Seattle:
🔑 Population & Urban Density - Seattle's larger population creates a bustling urban environment, while Bellingham's smaller community fosters a more relaxed atmosphere with familiar faces.
🔑 Cost of Living-Bellingham offers a more affordable lifestyle with lower home prices and living costs than Seattle, which has higher expenses.
🔑Transportation & Commuting - Seattle has a comprehensive public transportation system but faces traffic congestion, while Bellingham provides smoother local commutes despite fewer transit options.
🔑Employment Opportunities - Seattle boasts numerous high-paying job opportunities in major industries, whereas Bellingham offers a more balanced work-life dynamic with fewer employment options.
🔑Cultural Scene - Seattle has a vibrant cultural scene with diverse entertainment options, while Bellingham offers a growing arts community and easy access to larger cities.
🔑Proximity to Canada - Bellingham's close proximity to the Canadian border makes it ideal for frequent trips, compared to Seattle's two-hour drive to Vancouver.
🔑Climate Similarities - Both cities share a mild, rainy Pacific Northwest climate, with Bellingham typically experiencing slightly cooler temperatures.
🔑Education - Seattle offers a wider variety of prestigious universities, while Bellingham provides local educational options through its institutions.
🔑Community & Lifestyle - Unlike Seattle's more dispersed and diverse neighborhoods, Bellingham's smaller size promotes a tight-knit community atmosphere.
In conclusion, whether you’re drawn to the vibrant pace of Seattle or the laid-back charm of Bellingham, both cities offer unique lifestyles. Watch the FULL video to Learn more!

    I was in Bellingham this past week and per your recommendation went to “The Black Cat” and had the Gouda Chicken Pesto (great call). Also visited Anthony’s at Squalicam Harbor - thanks for your continuous videos; great content! Keep’em coming! Homes are definitely more affordable compared to Seattle and especially the east side (Bellevue, Kirkland)… but the Bellingham area has also become less affordable now. I don’t know why the PNW has always been so expensive compared to the Midwest and the South. I was also in Vancouver, B.C. and the cost of living was lower comparatively (Walmart, restaurants, everyday essentials - homes have become more expensive but the government has taken steps to stop foreign sales) even after factoring in for the exchange rate. Anyway, I will be revisiting the Seattle area again in March; will swing by Bellingham again. Last observation… I noticed there were are a lot of senior citizens residing in Bellingham (I saw them on the boulevard boardwalk, at the parks, near chuckanut drive lookout points) not a problem for me, just an observation considering there is a university in Bellingham so I was expecting a younger crowd. Anyway, have a wonderful weekend and my best to you - take care ✌🏼👊🏼

    Another problem is you can no longer tub the south fork of the nooksavk river because the natives decided that people floting on tubs kill the fish so if your white no floting the south fork ....but if your native it's all good you can tub the south fork ,ive lived in the area my whole life and the south fork is a good safe place to bring your kids to swim float on a hot afternoon. The city of bellingham sided with the natives so no floating the south fork unless your native. ...the north fork is to cold and swift it's to dangerous for kids and young teenagers

    I live in everson about 20 minutes from bellingham. Mostly I like the area but the city counsel sucjs and the department of ecology sucks bad right now thay are suing everyone who has a water well. We think thay are trying to make everyone who uses water from the watershed to pay for water from there own property , it costed me 20,000$ to install my well and get it up and running , so if you move to the area bewere of the A holes that run the city and county. Thay really like your money and thay try at every corner to take it from you

      Hi @stevepearson6316 I’m sorry to hear you’re having such a tough experience with local regulations and the city council! It’s frustrating when it feels like the system is working against you, especially with something as essential as water. Your insight is really valuable for anyone considering moving to the area. Are there any local groups or resources you've found helpful in navigating these issues?

    The cost of living started going up the day the Georgia-Pacific pulp-n-papermill closed, since that reduced the air pollutants, risk of chemical disaster and import of known carcinogens on an industrial scale. I moved here to finish high school (BHS, '89) and started working local Labor Union during the oil refinery turnarounds down south, but the city still had intermittent disaster tests that were attuned to possible train wrecks of multiple chlorine tanks, tidal waves hitting the oceanside paper mill (that expanded operations here during '90's because of shutdowns elsewhere) that is still an environmental risk despite closure due to some serious chemical operations happening on "infill", which is created land in the bay that turns to soup during an earthquake or volcanic tremble....certain siren patterns blared at night in public downtown, and thanks to Union employment, I learned that meant being prepared to head safely and carefully upwind w/enough supplies to await further news, and without looking back. Atomic war (50-60's) and chemical attack shelters were a set of archaic tunnels that met up under the high school I attended and I only know of their existence because I was assigned to assist the janitor when I first got in trouble after moving here from a major multicultural metro area (aka Sea-Tac). The end of high school and the start of adult life here also led to acknowledge myself as a cultural and racial minority the jocks and farmboys couldn't intimidate and the cops had no reason to profile, though they did anyway and obviously. The art and music scene enlivened the social scene into an actual community, one that includes WWU, whose graduates often remain in the community while describing plenty of deteriorating factors in those communities they've lived in elsewhere. Western Washington University attracted some intelligentsia that upgraded the collective community mindset just as the terrain and climate had attracted previous generations of flat-plain food growers and processors of oceanic resources (aka farmers and fisherman) w/out totally displacing the local Native/Coast Salish peoples, including Lummi, Nooksack and other canoe-carving Tribal societies, becoming truly familiar and sometimes family to itself. Now I have metal architectural works around downtown, where some friends have opened restaurants and others have played as bandmates and/or DJ's, the creative factor is undeniable among the locals, the social attitude is "laid-back metropolitan escapee", we're about as far North and West as you can get (until you board the Alaska ferry) on foot, there's still plenty of room and lots of work to do while appreciating that independents do well while collaboratives actually succeed and corporations only visit during summer break.

      Hey @Jason-hg1pc Thank you for sharing such a detailed perspective! It’s fascinating to hear about your journey and the unique history of the area. It sounds like you’ve been a part of some significant changes in the community, especially with your work as an artist-blacksmith. The blend of art, culture, and the natural environment creates such a rich atmosphere. What do you think is the most important aspect of the community's evolution over the years?

If you’re open to it, sharing more about what specifically makes it challenging could help others understand better and maybe find solutions or support. Hang in there and take care

    Bellingham is by no means is a major metropolitan area. I doubt thta many people would expect that Bellingham would have public transportation and an arts scene commensurate with most major metro areas. Your arguments about unemployment rates falls a bit flat. How many areas of the country do not have a major employer or dominant type of employment. Earthquakes are an issue anywhere out west just as flooding is in the plains states and back east or hurricanes along the eastern seaboard.

    • @movingtobellinghamwashington
      @movingtobellinghamwashington 29 днів тому

      I appreciate your feedback @stevehunter291! 💯 Many places don’t have a single dominant industry. As for natural disasters, every region has its own risks. AS IF a realtor is going to tell you anything bad about Bellingham. Two things are guaranteed to happen: ONE: The cost of housing will to continue to rise even above its current extremely high level, meaning that TWO: Huge numbers of wealthy Californians will continue to move here, and Bellingham residents will continue to detest you. The only people who will welcome you are people like this guy who are making a fortune off ruining this city and turning Washington into the mess you thought you were leaving behind in California.

    • @movingtobellinghamwashington
      @movingtobellinghamwashington 29 днів тому

      Hi @Armond2013! I understand your frustration. Real estate agents might paint a rosier picture, but it’s no secret that rising housing costs and the influx of new residents can definitely change the character of a place. It’s understandable to feel frustrated about how these changes might impact the community. Balancing growth with maintaining the city’s unique vibe is a challenge, and it’s important to have conversations about how to address these issues while considering everyone’s perspectives.

    • @Armond2013
      @Armond2013 28 днів тому

      @@movingtobellinghamwashington Thanks for the word salad response. "Everyone's perspective" would include people who are being priced out of housing, sometimes working two jobs and struggling to make the rent or mortgage. Yes, this is a considerable "change in character," and they are "understandably frustrated," about the "vibe," but it will be a cold day in hell before their concerns are "addressed." Growth is not being "balanced." Bellingham is becoming a city of the wealthy and people who are not wealthy need to prepare for even greater future struggles, or get out. Unless, like you, they are positioned in a field where you benefit from this state of affairs. Too bad about that NAR lawsuit though. Could be that your own vibe will become a little less unique.

    Anyone comparing B'ham to SF or Vancouver has no idea where they are moving,-- B'ham is not in the same urban category as those major cities, and even more than that, it sits in its own isolated bubble, contained by geography and... I-5.I really feel that your negatives about it, for the most part, aren't true, but you then didn't cite to any of the ACTUAL negatives, many of which really ARE killing Bellingham right now. So first, the things actually killing B'Ham, and then I responded to your 6, because I think it only fair to hear "the other side." Major issues: 1. Homeless population: people can pretend it is not an issue, they can try to ignore it. Whatever you want to do, but it has seriously rotted out the downtown core and has caused the overall "feeling" of B'ham to dramatically change since the start of the pandemic. Millions have been pumped into B'Ham to solve the key issues, but where has the money gone? In addition, the RV cities, like down Cornwall, State St by the trail, etc. really started to give a black eye to the community. Yes, this is a nationwide issue, yes it needs to be addressed, yes, there are humane and good ways to address it. No, B'Ham hasn't done it. 2. Influx of condo owners: B'Ham for some reason gave the approval for high-rise condo/apt buildings everywhere. So now there are high-rises all over Sehome and other places where there used to be gorgeous trees and a nice, low line of sight. It completely destroyed the entire character of the neighborhood. With the builds have come even MORE out of towners who are using the units for weekend crash pads. We know this because the roads in Shame, South, and Fairhaven are so clogged on the weekends, you no longer dare to drive unless you want to sit in traffic for 20 min -- ACTUAL traffic. 3. B'Ham was not made for the number of people that are now here. Period. Infrastructure size, support services... nothing. And nothing has kept up with the growth. That means things like medical care, etc. are very difficult to obtain in a timely manner because evvvveryone is just overloaded with people now. Also, things that used to have the personal service touch simply don't because... numbers (I am not talking about automation). 4. All these changes have pushed the actual locals out, so B'Ham has quickly, and continues to quickly, bleed out its unique culture. And that..... truly sucks. Your 6: 1. Your weather data is a bit out of date. The summers have been much warmer recently, with mid-summer being frequently in the 80s many days. Most homes don't have A/C -- never needed it before-- this is a consideration because it's $10k+ to install it for most people. It is grey-ish a lot of the late fall through early spring, but the highs slide down from 50s in fall to about 20s mid-winter and back up again. A few years ago, we got that massive Christmas dump of snow, and other than last year, there's been a massive snow dump every year. 2. Job market really depends what industry you are in. Health care? Booming. We have the refineries as well. Education is booming. If you are in IT? Not as much, no. 3. Public transportation CAN be great around the core, but peters out as you go further out. And the buses come as frequently as every 15 min in the core. WTA has done a lot of work to improve. 4. Entertainment: This point is bogus. There is SO MUCH incredible entertainment, AND if you are desperate for city-level entertainment ,get season tix in Vancouver (an hour away) or SEA (90 min away). People do that all the time. I worked with people who have Seahawks season tix, etc. Also? The Bellingham Belles minor league baseball team are a big summer favorite in town, so not sure why you are so dismissive of them. The Mt. Baker Theatre has brought in huge names as well. All THAT said... B'ham's greatest draw is the outdoors, so THAT is its entertainment. 5. Earthquake: Grew up in CA. Survived Loma Prieta, Napa, etc, and house straddled two major fault lines. You get house insurance for it, you prep, and ... you move on. You can't obsess about these things. Everywhere in America there are natural disasters of some kind waiting to gobble you up. Actually, I am surprised you didn't mention the wildfires, which are devastating the entire PNW this year and the last few years. MUCH bigger threat to B'Ham -- look at all the trees everywhere. 6. Truth.
