    1.5 rivet length is ok for thick aluminum. Like .050" 2024-T3 and thicker. When you're riveting thin material like .016" 2024-T3. 1.5 rivet length is far too long after driven. It stretches the aluminum sheet giving terrible results. This is even worse when driving monel rivets. My rule is generally 1D length max. Even a little shorter with monel rivets in thin SS or ti sheet material. I always use rivet rubber to keep the shop head side sheet material flat. Very little gun pressure and I always use a tungsten bar. I'm 29 years in the business. And a transport Canada licensed sheet metal AME. Most of my experience is in very thin material. Anybody can drive rivets in thick material and make it look decent. Not so easy in the thin stuff.

      I’m doing a partial roof repair on an inclosed trailer.Roof is thin galvalume with .040 al going overlap.Using 3/16 1100*F soft al brazier rivets.Cut 1/2” length down to .350” Big bottoms I tell you after setting.The 1/2” would just bend over.I’ll put 2 rows being 2” apart.Should be good.Kinda fun learning all this stuff and tricks of the trade.Thanks for you comment.

    • @lenBrill1971
      @lenBrill1971 Рік тому

      @Scott M Yes. A 1100 series rivet is soft aluminum. They drive and finish nicely. A double row of 3/16 diameter rivet is more than sufficient for .040" sheet. I love solid rivets compared to blind (hollow) rivets. Your joints will never work loose.

Does anyone still make and sell the bolts and washers as well as the tools to fasten them? Are they sold under a different name, maybe?

I'm rebuilding a rowing erg and I have to have it as drag free and balanced as possible. Thinking of using domed Aluminum solid rivets and anneal the ends? don't want expansion in the plastic, just clamping. Well thats the plan. Mahalo

He was very proud of the plane and the work they did their on it. He spoke of all the letters and card's they received from B-17 crews in the war zones thanking them for a great plane.

    Can brass solid rivets be installed using a manual press (like the one used to make holes or ring rivets)? Or it always has to be done using air punch hammer ? (I plan to use brass rivets to reassemble blades on antique fan propellers... the clearance is always the same and could performed on a bench. I don't need a mobile air hammer, except if really necessary for the rivet...)

    • @thesheetmetallab260-saitsc6
      @thesheetmetallab260-saitsc6 3 роки тому

      I guess you could attempt it and let us know. The instructor in this videos is retired and hopefully healthy at home. We post the videos for students to have the material online and easy to access. So as longer as those antiques are flying and are whitin airworthiness. Do as you feel it might work for you. Brass is very easy to work with.

    There is always that darn flat part because the roller that is causing the bend is a certain distance away from the dual squeeze rollers. I guess there is a way to make fully round tubes with this tool, but how?

    • @luca9130
      @luca9130 3 роки тому

      Tap the sheet the opposite way to put a slight bend the other way then roll a few times flip the sheet around and do the same with the other end. Doesn’t get the flat spot out entirely but makes it a lot better.

    • @dontnubblemebro
      @dontnubblemebro 3 роки тому

      My usual way is to weld the edges, grind flat, then put it through the roll again

    • @mrmont2000
      @mrmont2000 4 місяці тому

      The way to get the bend to the end, is to just barely get a bite on the end of the metal, then you would have to push/pull the other end up above the rollers to apply the bend to the end.
