Any chance to get your plater profile?
I think that, frankly, 5e2024 is scam because the work they've done on it is *bad*. The book flows like trash, the language is poorly executed, the roleplay aspect has been torn asunder rules as written. It is a nothing burger not because there is nothing in the book. It's a nothing burger because the quality is shite. Want an example? Let's look at the level 3 life cleric "Disciple of Like" feature. The features reads: "When a spell you cast with a spell slot restores hit points to a creature, that creature regains additional hit points on the turn you cast the spell. The additional hit points equal 2 plus the spell slot's level." I can rewrite that a lot more clearly: "When you cast spell of first-level or higher which restores hit points, the targets of that spell regain additional hit points equal to 2 + the level of the spell." Or, hell, use the 5e language: "Whenever you use a spell of 1st level or higher to restore hit points to a creature, the creature regains additional hit points equal to 2 + the spell’s level." That language is clearer, more concise, and easier to read. It also gets rid of a time-travel paradox. With RAW in 2024, if I cast a healing spell into an Ioun stone of Reserve (remember, it's supposed to be backwards compatible), it is "A spell you cast with a spell slot" at time t=0. Later, at time t>0, that spell is used to heal a target. I cast that spell, and it has restored hit point at t>0, but because "that creature regains additional hit points on the turn you cast the spell" it also gained hit points in the past, at time t=0. The change in language also makes no sense because there is no reason to nerf a life-cleric's healing abilities with edge cases. Right now, no healing spells are of lower than first level. Potions are not cast either. So that leaves active spell casting, scrolls, and magical items which cast spells. If the cleric is divinely ordained and empowered to heal, then having those items benefit from their effect makes sense. But the RAW now means that a cleric using their spell casting ability to use a scroll - which can only be used RAW by classes which have the spell on their list - does not benefit from their ability. Which means that they loose their USP as a build. Which is prima facie bad design. The fact that the people writing this book have had *10 years* and are churning out dross like that is one example of many of why it is a scam. They moved scores out of species, notionally out of sense of moral obligation - but moved it into backgrounds that now create socio-economic normative expectations. Why are "Nobles" more intelligent than "Farmers" now? And, in the process, they've added even more which differentiates the species, but which also breaks balance. Aasimar and Dragonborn both have access to flight as a species trait - which makes them massively more robust compared to, say, a Dwarve's tremor sense. At every page, this book is a mess. It is poorly laid out. Seriously, read the 5e "Step-by-Step Character's" chapter, and compare that to 2024's "Creating a Character". 5e centers roleplay and player agency. It encourages, explicitly, creativity. It explains why each part is important. It gives an example. At each step is laid out clearly and concisely. 2024 gives a lazy a glib summary of Bards as "liking performance." That's a literally meaningless thing to say. Instead they should highlighting the bard's roll as a support class. And what detail is given doesn't explain what you're doing. It just tells you what to do. The lists of items are often interrupted by their own tables, where are in 5e they are either small inserts right where they are needed, or they are kept in one of the four corners of the page such that text is allowed to flow around them contiguously. The book is *actively bad*. I'm fine with changing how the action economy works. Whatever. That's a tweak to the rules. But the actual work product that they are now selling - that will make it impossible to buy a 2014 PHB first part in a few years - is abject crap. So yeah, I'm kinda pissed. Because what everyone forgets about the "Well, you can always play the old rules" attitude is that you can't go out and buy a 3e or 4e rulebook new. Because they discontinued them. And that is what is going to happen here. That doesn't even touch on the fact that, as an object of art, it is a worse book, lacking in a coherent visual voice. It's also, somehow, *less* diverse. There is a much greater sense of *cultural* hegemony in the art in 2024, compared with 5e, where the Fighter and Wizard in particular stand out as not ascribing to traditional Eurocentric depictions of those classes. And the intrusion into my *manual for my fantasy tabletop game* of art depicting *the very real world* is also not in keeping, as it breaks the immersion of the *roleplaying* aspect. It's just... it's bad. It's not well done. It is obviously flawed. And it is, frankly *less* inviting of diversity, less encouraging of creative voice, and less proactive about the presentation of a rich and multicultural fantasy world. So, even on the style points they're trying to win by changing Race to Species (something I've done for years anyway) and removing ASIs to some other, even more regressive place - it falls flat on its face.
Can you add Hex dmg to witchbolts bonus action damage? Or conjure elementals extra dmg, other extra dmg?
This is the content i needed 👌
True strike got the biggest glow up, It went from almost completely useless, to breaking thief rogue. Bonus magic action scroll of True strike, Action True strike, add sneak attack.
Did not think I'd see a Hi-Rez shirt on a D&D video! Great video man, keep it up 😊
I work in esports/gaming full-time so I've been there to their offices a few times! haha. I even casted some Rogue Company tournaments from their studio. Thank you!
If you have a weapon with the nick property you can save your bonus action for witch bolt if you're holding two weapons which is a decent use of a 1st level spell slot and bonus action for a Eldritch knight fighter if you're going against something tanky
Flaming sphere is better.
Map making skill would be interesting. As you explore and based on map making skill level you start to develop a map. Details are dependent on the skill level. Hmm. Something to think about.
This was amazing for healers! TY TY TY. Please tell me you’re coming back with new guides for New world 2.0 release? I’m gojng console and need controller targeting healing help !!
buff procs ftw
Everywhere I look says a different stat priority. Haster is always either first or last.
This is from Dragonflight Season 1.
This has been updated it seems? Just unlocked talents and now I can pay to unlearn a talent for another.
Yeah, this is from before the game even launched.
" you don't have to player" this argument sucks
Okay
I have check 3 places in 2024 for Backwards compatible, Character Creation, Character Origins and Free Rules. And wasn't able to locate a Box or section talking about using 2014/older options.
I just wanna know how to get the helmet transmog in the thumbnail.
No idea lol :X
Gotta make sure I add aboleth bait
haha this would be quite the surprise!

They removed the Gods phanteon? Did they just killed the entire dnd universe? Yes, they are
They didn't remove. I think the plan is to make the PHB setting neutral as much as possible and then they plan on releasing setting books separately that will probably have details like that included. They already have 2 setting books planned for the forgotten realms
Spoiler, dont buy, still in 5e
These are nerfs. Trying to lipstick on these pigs just makes everyone look bad. People who like the nerfs and say so, at least acknowledge that these are nerfs...I can respect their opinion even if I disagree and wont be using them. That said, those who try to make others think these ARENT nerfs are lying....and there is no need for it...Sleep is terribly nerfed.
Why Witchbolt when I can Call Lightning?
You're using Call Lightning at low level? haha.
@@LevelUpmmo Rule of cool my man. Rule of cool.
the lower games are the interesting part not the top ones
Fair enough!
I would love nothing more rn than a solid dnd mmo with no pay walls and pvp similar to ESO (only thing I liked about that game)
I'd be happy with any good D&D mmo! haha
Sharpshooter already allowed you to attack at long range... so all it did was take away the possible increase to damage while adding a close range option... so I think it's a pretty massive debuff
Yeah, I said that in a comment somewhere when it was pointed out. I had it confused with something else.
@@LevelUpmmo Believe me I understand, I get called out for every mistake in every one of my videos at least 30 times
*Most* of these spells are huge glow-ups and get a certified Thumbs Up from me. My only real hesitation here is with Sleep - it seems like it might now be slipping into the same design space as Tasha's Hideous Laughter, which for me raises the question of what makes them distinct? When do you pick one over the other?
Tasha give your friends advantage (because of prone) but it's for 1 round spell if your party hit target for every hit target repeat save with advantage.Sleep didn't give friends advantages but it's gor longer controlle plus it little aoi
One issue I am having, which I haven't seen addressed anywhere. Is that you can use 2014 characters in a 2024 game, I've seen Jeremy state this many times, but what happens with your spells and feats? Do I have to use the new ones? Like for example, I know spirit guardians has been changed to do damage at the end of a creatures turn, which is much less powerful than the old version where they took it at the start of their turn or upon entering the area. If I bring a 2014 cleric into a 2024 game, am I restricted to only use the more powerful, 2014 spirit guardians? Or do I have to update it to the new version? And if that's the case, that I have to update, how is this any different from "picking and choosing" what versions of feats and spells I want to use? Which Jeremy has said you can't do.
It's not so much you "can't" it's that you shouldn't based on how they built the game. You can 100% do it, but you're more likely to find broken combinations, things being tuned poorly, etc. if you do that. It's not as intended.
I don't think the books themselves are a scam. I think it is clear Wizards want it's VTT to function like a MMO (ie a live service with subscriptions) with microtransactions. They want D&D to shift to mainly being played online. They are not hiding they are going to push that over physical books. There are quotes in interviews where they are pretty open about it. One dev even mentions Fortnite. That's where I see the issue.
I've seen just as many intervews where they state they have no plans to discontinue the books. I think they're aware of the future and are trying to keep D&D relevant for years to come and into the new generation. I don't fault them for trying to make sure D&D doesn't become a thing of the past.
@@LevelUpmmo Hasbro execs have been clear. The point of this is too make more money. D&D is "under-monetized" was the quote. They will still offer books because they make money. The VTT is the focus though.
@@Carblesnarky and I think, we, as folks who have been playing D&D for a long time and grew up with in-person pen and paper as the only way… Have to realize that there is a whole massive segment of people who play today who have only known playing online. I think playing in person is better. But having started to use an iPad for my character sheet while playing in person… The efficiency it brings is unmatched compared to a sheet of paper and a pencil. My point is we can still play in person and with paper and books… But there’s a whole new world of technology that is only going to keep coming and a lot of modern D&D players, it’s what they want.
@@LevelUpmmo I have been playing a long time as well (since 81). I don't really have an issue with what WotC is doing. This has been coming for a very long time. I agree this is easily avoided and that different folks play different ways. However, being well versed in video games and distant tt play, I know what's going on. Hasbro wants a D&D to at least partly function on a live service mmo business model. That's not a secret. They want as much of the game in their ecosystem as they can get. This is business. This is about more money and more control. Hasbro is following the same strategies that AAA video game companies follow. I am not pulling this out thin air. I am going off of the comments from developers and the well trodden path of mmos. You mentioned keeping D&D relevant. Relevance equals profitability in entertainment. Yes they want customers for as long as they can get them. Will it be good for customers? Depends. It's going to overall cost more for the average player mostly likely. The quality of the VTT looks good and could make it a good value.
It's a bit much to say Witch Bolt is super powerful. It's significantly better, but the only reason it seems insane is because of where it started from. Between the range and other changes, it has just reached the point of being viable to pretty good at lower levels. Which is nice.
This is specifically about lower level (even says so in the title :p), so I think it's super powerful haha. Level 1 dealing 2d12 on repeat is intense (bolt BA + toll the dead as the example).
The -5/+10 was bad design. It makes it so that the feature is usually only used when the penalty is mitigated/doesn’t matter.
Depends on the player for sure. I know people who once they had it, they ALWAYS took it. Win or lose. It was just how they liked to do it.
Thank you for the Fantasy Grounds mention. My VTT of choice. Love Dungeon Alchemist and Fantasy Grounds for map making.
Hey everyone! First, thanks for watching the video. Second, I'm just getting started with D&D/TTRPG content, so please consider subscribing to get more! If you want to be able to discuss D&D/TTRPGs in real time with folks, my Discord is going to be a great place to do that - discord.gg/8egztgPsVD
Characters were already basically Super Heroes compared to original D&D's. Honestly, tired of action, bonus action, this or that. Let us attack and try to work together to beat the enemy. Hopefully DM's don't play as they really could. People you fight will have those powers too. Most bosses have a room before theirs that you have to defeat people. But I have had most of the DM's treat it like the boss don't hear it. This really works in any room. You cast a loud spell in a cave and most of the people in the cave would hear it. May not know where it comes from. But everyone is now on alert.
No doubt, there are plenty of ways to add that level of "immersion" but oftentimes they can make it even more difficult for DMs to plan something themselves. Definitely two sides to most options.
As a Druid, Conjure Elementals makes the Spore Druid the BEST subclass.
Curious about this. Thanks for the comment!
Spore druid doesn't have extra attack. Conjure minor elemental is a moon druid spell
@@lukorama10 All Druids and Wizards get that spell.
@@acephas3 yes, but your comment said the spell benefits spore druid a lot.... which is not correct. The spell benefits having multiple attacks, moon druids can get up to 3 attacks per turn, spore druids only get 1 without multiclassing or using very bad TWF
@@lukorama10 The Spell benefits a Spore Druid, period, and all the more so with Polearm Master, even more so when it is upcast. I retain my 4 temp HP per Druid level, and still have access to ALL of my spells without needing to change shape. With the new rules, I can no longer be knocked out of Symbiotic Entity.
as a 1e and 2e player, I do not understand concentration. I understand how it works, but it's a crap rule. I don't understand why the writers wanted to nerf spell casters' ability to buff their party.
Well, there's plenty of concentration things that last an amount of time, but don't buff the party. I think the idea here is that you can't stack multiple things that last for a period of time that they deemed as being too strong if you could.
Its a good rule. In 1e casters are extremely weak so their spells are stronger.
@@coldstream11 better to limit the number of buffs or debuff a target can take than to use a sledgehammer like concentration. I used to limit the number of de/buffs by category: body, mind, enchantment, armor, weapon, spirit, etc.
@@whoisjYou're complaining about an oversimplification of a limit to spellcasting, but your solution imo is an overcomplication, adding way too many "variable bonuses" that either make it questionable of what counts as what, what stacks as what, what the bonus should count as (if designing an item or ability or enemy as a DM), that just add to crunch and open the door to confusion at the table and/or munchkining from a certain crowd. If that's your style, that's perfectly fine. Honestly 3rd/3.5e is right up your alley mechanically I think. But I think this gives meaningful choice to spellcasting instead of just spamming/cycling through the same bonuses. As well as the fact that 5e is *much* more forgiving to casters (beyond just the cleric) being able to cast without any issue in armor as long as they are trained/proficient in it (no %failure chance or anything like that) and generally being far more survivable even early on.
@@whoisjWhat you're suggesting is adding a lot of bookkeeping, and it doesn't solve the issue of the combination of powerful continuous spells that aren't just buffs/debuffs. Like spells that cause difficult terrain, do turn by turn damage, or summon creatures for instance. They'd have to severely nerf continuous spells in general if they took away the concentration limitations. I mean, I remember 3/3.5/PF1e. The bookkeeping and balancing around buff stacks and summons was obnoxious. So I'd rather not go back to that.
Sleep kind of feels like more of a nerf then a buff. Sure, you can target stronger enemies now, and you kind of disable them for 2 turns, but now they get a save. Before if you cast it on the right targets they would just fall asleep with no save, so it was a sure thing crowd control option for weaker enemies. The other spells sound really good now.
No doubt. There’s definitely an argument, depending on the situation
Witch bolt was definitely improved, but I think it remains to be seen how much of a banger it is. One aspect of the improvement is that is not mentioned is that you don’t have to use your bonus action to do the d12 damage on subsequent rounds. Sure, most of the time you are going to do it, but it no longer ends the spell if you do something else with your bonus action, giving it an increase in flexibility. Of course, changing the secondary damage to require a bonus action rather than a(n magic) action was a huge boost as well.
I think at levels 1-3 it's going to be VERY good. No need to hit again, just say you deal 1d12 + as you said, you can skip it if you really need to use something else.
@@LevelUpmmoEven level 4, it has a fun little interaction with the reworked Spell Sniper feat. Increase the range of all Witchbolt by another 60 ft, thus increasing that tether range the enemy has to run out of to escape, and ignoring cover and casting in melee to make it basically inevitable. Looks like fun on a Blue/Bronze Dragon Sorcerer due to limited lightning damage spell options, while also synergizing well with the new sorcerer "mage rage" giving advantage on your spell attack rolls as well as with Chromatic Orb.
Barkskin looks good, and I like it. But the wording suggests that your AC is now a 17 regardless of what else you have going on. So if you receive Barkskin, your AC jumps up to 17, that's fine. Now, what happens if you don a shield? Does your AC go up by 2, or does it remain at 17? I'd like some clarity on this one.
Works the same as it was in 2014 - it ignores everything else you have that effects your AC, and sets it to17, unless your AC would be higher without it, in which case it does nothing.
For witch bolt, you missed a bit there... it's not 2d12 per turn at 1st level. It's 2d12 the first turn, with a successful hit, and 1d12 each round thereafter, no attack roll necessary, whether the initial attack hit or not. That's an average of 13 lightning damage initially, with a successful attack, and an average of 6 damage each round thereafter as long as you continue to concentrate. It's also useless against multiple foes, so once the target goes down, the spell is over. Still very good, especially at low levels, but hardly overpowered.
Yeah, I was talking about combining it with another spell (the example was Toll of the Dead) hence the 2d12 every turn. I was saying, you do 2d12 (or not -- you can miss) and then get 1d12 for free every round (BA), and then hit with Toll of the Dead for another 1d12 (wisdom save) and be hitting for 2d12 every turn at level 1 relatively easily.
@@LevelUpmmo Yes, that would do it, for that specific build. I thought you meant just using the one spell you were discussing at the moment. But I suppose the same could be said of any damage dealing cantrip (although none of them do quite as much damage as TTD)
@@davidarmstrong1617 Yeah, low levels, combining it with just about anything puts out fantastic damage given the free 1d12.
A sneaky nerf to Great Weapon Master is the damage only gets added when you take the Attack Action on your turn. No extra damage to the Bonus Action attack or Reaction attacks.
The new diviner favor is also a great spell, it's way better than hunters mark but it does less damage
A 1d4, right? It has a space, especially if you can get it off just before combat starts, but it's still not a GREAT sell for min-maxers who number crunch for best results haha. I like it though!
The difference is Divine Favor only costs a bonus action and Hunters Mark/Hex could cost multiple bonus actions to swap targets. If you have a bonus action attack you’re getting a lot more out of Divine Favor. And because you cast divine favor on yourself and not an enemy it’s also easier to cast it before combat. But I saved the best for last. Theres no concentration so you could use Divine Favor and a concentration spell like Hunters Mark, Hex, Spirit Shroud, Conjure Minor Elementals… well maybe not that one.
Neat video to give a quick summary on the buffed spells at low level. I do think Ray of Sickness is worth noting since it automatically applies the Poisoned conditoon on hit instead of requiring a Con Save which is a huge buff. I'm assuming you didn't mention them because you plan on doing it in a different video, but the Ranger & Paladin exclusive spells got a ton of buffs as well. Still wish they got new spells, but the enhancements are appreciated.
I would agree, Ray of Sickness is a much better spell now. Hitting a creature with it dealing solid level 1 damage AND make it have disadvantage (via poison) from that point forward is a huge improvement. Thanks for the comment!
Great video I think Great Weapon Master was both a nerf and buff. In that it's now usable at low levels, but with a lower damage bonus. And at higher levels and particularly at level 17 the damage bonus is close to the old Great weapon master feat, without penalty. I think Counter Spell was nerfed, since the old Counterspell could automatically counter level 3 spells or lower. And the spell slot of the countered spell was used up. From a player's perspective, I think Counterspell should've remained unchanged from it's 2014 version. One of my favorite Counterspell stories is when I counterspell a Fireball, and an ally countered my counterspell. So we all got hit, and I went down from damage. As for Sharpshooter, it was nerfed. It got a +! to Dex and added being able to shot in melee, but removed the damage boost. I would've added Proficiency Bonus to damage for ranged weapons, without the heavy property, instead of firing into melee. Since Great weapon master's damage bonus works with heavy ranged weapons now. .
Fair takes! Thanks for the comment. Glad you liked the video.
one thing Fighter's Barb's Even hexblad's get more than one attack a turn a caster gets 1 lvled spell a turned ........... gotta keep up with dmg somehow
Not normally at level 1, 2, 3, or 4 haha
Sleep+Portent is overpowered. Unless the enemy has a legendary resistance, any encounter can be made trivial with a few good portents and a wizard with the alert feat
100% definitely some combos that can make it be VERY good against non-BBEGs. Thanks for sharing!
