100 NOT OUT! Argyle Shearing 2023
I made this video for our neighbours so they would have a memento of the 100th shearing by their family at "Argyle" and they have kindly consented to let me upload it to our channel.
Not only was it the 100th shearing but it was the first time they had entered the Ermenegildo Zegna Wool Trophy Awards and they came 5th! A tremendous achievement!

Sheep Classing and Stick Reader

We thought viewers might like to see a bit more about how we use the stick reader to help with sheep classing. And Sarah shows our daughter Kate some of the finer points of sheep classing. And we get some help from the grandchildren.....
Drenching and Classing using the Combi Clamp Sheep Handler
Переглядів 1,3 тис.8 місяців тому
In this video we talk a little bit about why we decided to buy a sheep handler and why, after much deliberation, we chose a Combi Clamp. We also show how we use it for drenching and for classing sheep.
Crutching Cradle 2024
Переглядів 1,7 тис.8 місяців тому
Crutching costs have become quite expensive and there is often a shortage of shearers at critical times so we investigated crutching cradles which would allow us to do our own crutching. We evaluated two types of cradles the Harrington and Perkinz. The Harrington type was developed in Western Australia (ours was made in Dubbo by Holt) and the Perkinz in New Zealand. Our view is that the Perkinz...
Vaccinating Lambs for Barbers Pole Worm
Переглядів 6022 роки тому
It is a common misconception that flies are the biggest animal welfare challenge for sheep farmers but in our district Barbers Pole Worm is a much bigger issue. Barbers Pole worm thrives in our hot wet summers and unlike flies which usually only affect a few animals in a mob, Barbers Pole can be deadly to the majority of the mob. While flystrike is visual and thus easy to detect Barbers Pole is...
This old fence needs propping up!
Переглядів 2922 роки тому
This bit of boundary fence is getting old and has been knocked around by the roos so its leaning over and needs propping up. The fence really needs replacing but that requires co-ordination with the neighbour and its not in the current budget so its just a rough and ready job that will hold until we can do the job properly.
Lamb Marking - Slow and Steady
Переглядів 2,4 тис.2 роки тому
This year the biggest issue with lamb marking was mustering the sheep through all the long grass. Not a bad problem to have! Last year we borrowed the neighbour's self tipping lamb cradle (made by Harvestaire in WA) and we were so impressed we decided to buy one. The old one had done nearly 40 years service so it was time to pension it off! With just Sarah and I it was slow and steady so we jus...
Shearing a ram and pressing wool
Переглядів 1,8 тис.2 роки тому
Day 2 of shearing. Shearing rams is hard work. They are big so its hard for the shearers to catch and drag them, extra care is required around the pizzle, the horns make it difficult to clean up around the head and if they decide to kick they can be dangerous. Our wool press is quite an old one but its adequate for our small clip. We show a bit of wool pressing and explain what the bale stencil...
Day 1 of Shearing 2022
Переглядів 1,8 тис.2 роки тому
Its shearing time and as usual we are keeping a close eye on the weather. Rain is threatening and the sheep can't be shorn when they are wet. And if there's too much rain the river will come up and we won't be able to get across.
Pre-Lambing Multimin Supplement
Переглядів 9032 роки тому
There is now quite a bit of evidence that a multimin supplement can improve lambing percentages by increasing lamb survival rates. However, it is always worth being skeptical of claims made by the manufacturers of these products, so we sought some independent advice which seems to support the claims. At the end of the day supplements are no substitute for ensuring the ewes have good nutrition t...
Scanning the ewes for pregnancy status
Переглядів 5212 роки тому
Its been 3 months since the ewes were joined which is the optimum time for scanning. Tim brings his ultrasound scanner and drafter and scans for dry, single or twins. We mainly do this to identify the ewes with twins so that we can give them the extra nutrition that they need. We also use the information to cull the dry ones. This year we have a high proportion of maiden ewes (ie ewes that have...
The Vet Removes a Cancer Eye
Переглядів 7802 роки тому
One of our ewes has a either a cancer eye or a pink eye gone bad. Either way the eye will have to be removed which is a job for the vet. For many farmers this is not a practical option and the ewe would have to be put down, but luckily for us the vet is not far away. I managed to film most of it but had a malfunction near the end so missed the final stitches and clean up. And a warning for view...
Sheep Farming - Trimming Feet and a Footbath
Переглядів 7532 роки тому
We've had two unusually wet winters in a row and combined with the usual high summer rainfall has meant that our sheep have not worn their hooves down as they normally would. This makes walking harder and increases the chance of infection between the toes. So we are running them through a footbath of zinc sulphate solution to harden the hooves and reduce the infection risk, and trimming the one...
Its the end of Joining so we are taking the rams away from their girlfriends.
Переглядів 6412 роки тому
After 5 weeks of joining we take the rams out. We check the condition score of the ewes which will let us know if we need to make any changes to their nutrition and will give us an indication of the likely success of joining - or not. One of the rams is reluctant to leave his girlfriends and Sarah and I have trouble telling the difference between rams and ewes.....
Sheep Farming. Lamb Fecal Egg Count is 1080 - Time to Drench!
Переглядів 6232 роки тому
Last Sunday we did a Fecal Egg Count (FEC) on the lambs and the count of 1,080 epg exceeds the treatment threshold of 1,000 epg, so we need to treat them. Because the eggs are a mix of worm types we will use a broad spectrum drench rather than treating just for Barbers Pole. If it had been just Barbers Pole we would have used BarberVax. Worms are by far our biggest animal health/welfare issue. ...

That's an interesting comment Chris. There's a lot of Australian clips that skirt lighter (or not at all...) but this wool is a traditional crimping style at 15-16 microns with a very high curvature so it all goes to the Italian trade which demands a very high standard of clip preparation. Also the Australian Wool Exchange (AWEX) have a Code of Practice that the Wool Classer must adhere to (or they get a please explain letter) and if the job is done properly then AWEX give it a tick and the buyers then know the wool has been prepared and classed properly so they can bid with confidence and hopefully that results in a better price for the grower. But at the end of the day its up to the grower to decide what standard of clip preparation they want.

But we have been pleasantly surprised because they do run fairly well despite our temporary lead in race. And yes after a very ordinary season in 2023 we have recovered a bit since Christmas!

As long as there's no pressure and they have the time to think about it Merinos are usually fairly easy to move around. The difficulties arise when you're in a hurry and try to push them along. Ewes with young lambs in a mob will go round in circles looking for their lamb. I haven't really noticed that shadows give them problems but sometimes they will shy for no apparent reason. Maybe they see a snake?

Thanks for this video. Very pleased to see that you are using NumNuts - I bought one of the first applicator units (in Australia) and very much want to use it. My issue is, with only a few breeding ewes and fewer than, say, 5 lambs a year, a near whole bottle of the anaesthetic is wasted. So I need to find a work around for that. Having said that, having now observed vet administered injection with ring use, and ring without injection, I was not able to observe any difference in lamb response. Indeed, the lamb with injection displayed more discomfort than those without, which is curious. I have two ram lambs to do this weekend and I am dreading it. They are only 10 days old so, I'm hoping, that will lessen their discomfort (I'd prefer to do under 7 days).

      @kalgaramerinos7085 2 роки тому

@@merinofarmeragriculturewor4623 To get the best out of the app its probably best to have done the Lifetime Ewe Management Course. So down the bottom there's Paddock, Mob and Supplement. Go into paddock and add the name of one of your paddocks and Save. Then Tap on the paddock name and if you have a Perennial pasture tap on Perennial. If the pasture is even a bit green tap on green and decide whether the pasture is Low Medium High or Very High quality (This is where it helps to have taken the Course). We find we are usually in the medium range, so we tap medium. There's a whole heap of numbers which are Kgs of Dry Matter Per Hectare (Kdmh) per hectare. If the pasture is medium quality then every 1cm of grass height = approximately 200 kdmh. (that all varies with quality and you learn that on the course). So you go across the paddock and estimate the average height of the grass and hence the Kdmh and enter that number in the app. say the height is 5cm then 5x200 = 1000. The app then uses that to work out how much energy the sheep can get off the paddock. Then tap on Mob down the bottom and add a mob. Currently we have twins and singles. Tap on the mob. Tap on the EWE SRW and PREG and tap on Edit to enter the joining date, the average weight of the ewes and the number and whether they are scanned as singles or twins. Then go back a page and add the condition score like you saw us doing in the video. Tap on the target score you want the ewes to be in 30 days and the app will calculate the daily energy requirement to get them to the nominated condition score. Tap on ME Intake (Mean Energy Intake) and select the paddock they are in and (based on your assessment of the pasture) the app will calculate how much energy they are getting from the pasture. If there's more than they need no need to supplement but if there is a shortfall you need to make it up with a supplement.. Tap on Supplement down the bottom and add whatever supplement you are using. Say its Lupins. Tap on Lupins and add the Amount, the Cost, percentage of Dry Matter and the ME value. (The last two are sometimes an estimate but if you buy your feed from a reputable supplier you should get those figures). Our last lot of Lupins had 90% dry matter and ME of 13. Go back to Mob and tap on Supplement Intake and select the supplement you are using (you can combine 2 supplements just change the % of each) and the app will tell you how many kgs per head of supplement to feed. If you tap on Mob it will tell you how much in total to feed. I think I should do a video on this it might make it easier to follow....!! Hope this helps
