    Worked cranes for 20 years, never had or seen a catastrophic rope failure. Seen damaged strands and bundles, but with 100 % safety factors on the ropes rated capacity from the crane manufacturers its just a replace ASAP. Interested to see the outcome of this.. Could have easily been another Orion disaster.

    I was working on this vessel November and December of last year (2021). Unfortunately this accident didn't come as a surprise to me. A real shame that's has happened and so glad no one was injured. Apparently the Saipem 7000 has a few nick names,. The widow maker and the death Star, to name a couple.

    Saipem 7000 is old and should have been scrapped years ago. No company will want the 7000 on their project and who could blame them. There looks to be quite a few serious safety and integrity concerns that need addressing asap!

    • @DRchilton
      @DRchilton 2 роки тому

      I agree with you 100 % I've worked on her and the health and safety culture was a bit dodgy. Don't think many companies will be looking to hire Saipem. They have only just been let back in the North Sea to operate apparently.

    • @DRchilton
      @DRchilton 2 роки тому

      The vessel is ok, it all depends on the way the company utilities it. Yes it's old and has a bad rep for safety and it's not a cost effective vessel by any means. Just needs a good company to run it more safety. On the other hand, it prob has no more years than 5left till decommissioning it.

    Very nearly much worse. The crane jib nearly goes over the top in recoil in which case it would have taken out most of the equipment and people on the deck. This perfectly illustrates the downfall of floating cranes. The buoyancy is stored energy like an elastic band. When the main wire broke all that energy was released. I work in the offshore industry but you could not pay enough to get me to work on one of these. When something goes wrong it goes very seriously wrong.

    • @stefanotranchellini9673

      I believe that the inclination of the boat was due to the ballast tank filled with water to counter the lifting weight. Once the load has been released those ballast tanks made the vessel to heel.
