All Aboard! Jamaica's School Train Program Breathes Life into Railway Revival
Some time ago, the Jamaica Railway Corporation (JRC) entered into a partnership with the Ministry of Transport and Mining, the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC), and the Ministry of Education to transport students from Old Harbour and Linstead to Spanish Town by rail. In this school train programme, students, teachers, parents, healthcare workers, and other essential personnel were prioritised for the service initially.
The Transport Minister at the time, Robert Montague, stated that under the agreement, the JUTC would pick up the students at the Spanish Town Railway Station and drop them off at various schools in Spanish Town, and the reverse would take place in the afternoon.
In this test run from Spanish Town to Linstead, representatives from schools and various ministries turned out in numbers to participate in this buzzing revival of the passenger train experience, which had been inactive for years. It was clear that many people were taking the Jamaican train for the first time and did not know what to expect, while seasoned campaigners who knew this route well also joined in.

Mark spring ur deduction here is phukry Pause here 😡 Jamaica was 1 of the 1st country in the Americas to have a Railroad This Railroad is a part of our history (historical site) just like Port Royal ; Runaway Bay Caves Bob Marley Museum Should've remain open as a historical Site for visitors/tourism bringn in revenues n jobs for our masses of poor Ur suffering myopia
Just open up the Railroad Let China build bk the railroad What country in the world would closed dwn its ONLY train line Blk does not make good leaders 💢😡
Some PPL are idiots Dem Respect the DANGER ?? That's coming there'way 😕
Janaica is the only country on earth who would closed dwn ur ONLY railroad system when less than 80% of ur population own a reliable transportation It's likened to NYC closn dwn thier subways Only blk keadets does this
Wasn't economically viable with the advent of minibusses...furthermore in 1979 hurricane Allen permanently destroyed the lines going to Portland. Minibus , market trucks and busses took over as the main transport industry and was more efficient as the train stations were farther away from the destination easily reached from roadways.
Honestly, the most fascinating part to me was the bauxite train. How many cars did that thing have?! ☺
Waste of time and money sincerely.
Jamaicans not easy Eeh no sah 😊
love to see the train come back remember my day travelling from may pen to St Elizabeth and Montego bay. fond memories
Is in still open in 2024😊
Yes, everyday!
This information is very interested for us generation who don't know these information
You people on here only see the negative in something that potentially is the start to something wonderful! Some a unnu deh a foreign and comparing. . Looking down on our island. . how shallow!! Have you not seen poverty in other parts of the world ? Have you not seen other train services in India , Africa and other parts of the underdeveloped and developing countries ? Even in developed countries ?! It's only Jamaicans bring down Jamaica.. especially those of you that migrate and think that you are now better than us. It's terribly sad...
I didn’t know Jamaica have train. Well I left Jamdown from I was young
Wow !! That's was absolutely incredible! 😄Thank you Soo much for taking us on the ride and for sharing your past experiences with Jamaica railway services.. 🙏🏾 I thoroughly enjoyed it.. and your commentary is A+ Super !! 💯👍🏾👏🏾🙏🏾
Glad you enjoyed it!
It's a start...
Why do jamaicans think it is okay to throw garbage in the streets. Poorer countries still manage to be cleaner
My favourite memory as a child was riding the train from Kingstown to Mount Pellier. I loved going through the cane, citrus and banana fields. Those days we had the JOS bus service. We were poor but independent. Everyone was working, had a trade or some kind of entrepreneurship and crime was at zero. Jamaica was on top but some evil forces sabotaged our country. I just wish the leaders would lead out of love and integrity not just for gain. I love 🇯🇲!🙏🏿❤️❤️
This belief it was the India migrant from India and the Chinese who built the railway in Jamaica.
Can you do a video from Stone Hill to Lawrence Tavern or from Stoney Hill to Glen Cove?
Haha that's interesting! I'm actually planning a trip from Stony Hill to Notto Bay soon! Where is Glen Cove?
It’s not only the people in charge seem to accept it, but also the people who drive on the road,
If they have enough money for the train then they should have enough money to make it safe for the people. Peace
Need to promote train safety. For people in the area.
Could we promote a ba kyard competition?
Tha nk you for this tour.😂This could be a good tour to see Jamaica & provide better transportation nationwide 😂😂😂 Tourism maybe????
fROM i WAS 6 YEARS OLD TRAVELLING TO AND FFROM kINGSTON, i HAVE WANTED TO TRAVELL ON THIS ROAD - NOW i AM 84 (ALMOST AND 20,00 kM FROM jAMAICA) - sO MANY MANY THANKS
Man sound like andrew holness narrating
Joke!
Let's see. Car vs train. Train wins, car loses. What would help is if there were more controlled crossings with automatic gates because for some reason many of these drivers don't like to obey the signals of flagmen for one reason or another. Some of them were so blatant in running the signals. What is it? Is it a case where the train is seen as an inconvenience; preventing the from going about their business? I mean just waiting a few minutes for a train to go by isn't gonna make you super-late for your appointment, work, or school. People should do research on how long it takes trains to come to a safe stop because unlike cars, they can't stop very quickly due to their mass and weight. The larger and heavier a vehicle is, the more distance it's gonna need to be able to stop
One hundred percent correct !!
Kendal still hurts me.

My first journey on this route was on a school trip from Spanish Town to Ewarton, and then back to Spanish Town.I was in grade 3 1A at age 9 and attending McCauley's Primary School in the Spring of 1987.It was the blue train that has the double humps at the top of each coach that shaped similar to that on the back of the camel.
For real !! I remember those coaches the moment you mentioned it !! Jah Jah !!

Couple years ago, I got lost on this road trying to find my way to Lloydsville, because Mount Hood and a huge accident that blocked the road so we turned back to bar walk to go on this road we went to this one location that we got lost with nowhere to go because the GPS didn’t work at that point. lol… eventually we found our way. 😂

So once more. Many thanks. I should mention that now I live in Thailand. Since 2020
How is it over there? All the best
Hello. Thanks for your video. On 26. December I will be 84 years old. When I was 5 years old there was a very big hurricane in Jamaica, at the time I lived with my mother in Kingston - My family decided that my mother - who was the youngest should return to Flint River, St Mary and take care of my Grand Father and Grand Mother. - So at the age of 5, I went through this tunnel for the first time, and subsequently many many times
Man! Happy to hear from you. Wishing you a great day on Dec 26 and definitely many more years to come. Take care
Seems like a good investment would be automated gates at all the level crossings so the train can run uninterrupted. Here in London even on the tram it gets priority at traffic lights. I hope those who can see that the investment in and expansion of the railway is important as support for the road networks. A few weeks ago the traffic in Montego Bay and Long hill of people commuting home was awful. If there was a rail service you know some pressure would be taken off. We know from the USA that just building more and more roads doesn't solve the problem and we know from the rest of the world that a multi transport network works.
Vintage This brings back lots of my early teenage days back in 1991
How long was the actual trip?
About 1hr15mins with all the delays, but actually 47 mins thereabouts if we hadn't stopped.
Oh maaan i wish this video was longer
I remember that ride from Kingston to Balaclava.
As a fan of Jamaica railway, and a dreamer the that it will one day be restored, I commend you for doing this video. I hope that with continued exposure of the wonderful history; it will motivate the public and government to know that for Jamaica's long term development and viability the rail system must be restored.
Please ensure that factual information is provided in your videos, or when third parties make incorrect statements they are corrected. The Spanish or Spaniards did not build the tunnel or the railway for that matter. They had left Jamaica about 200 years before when they lost the island to the English. The Bog walk section of the line was completed in the late 1840's.
Good stuff. I will prepare a feature in the future with facts
I'm can't find my grandfather backyard in Crescent/Damhead the train line runs exactly behind his yard but I use to it from the front
What timeframe in the video?
I sent the video to my nephew an he said it is 38 minute an some second in the video just before you reach the first tunnel. The road you mention run thru Damhead you can take from cow market or the one in front of the dam carry up there
I rode on that train as a youngster with my dad, from Kingston to St. James.
