Mutton Tallow equals Lanolin. Used to hold polishing and sanding grit in polishing bars. Used since the Iron Age to protect and lubricate swords and blades and tools. A blue ballpoint pen is far easier to see and to cut to than a pencil saving a great deal of time. If you have a lathe you can center clamp a dowel or a square in using 3 or 4 jaw chucks or wooden or metal holed draw collets you can center drill from the drill chuck in the tailstock. This works because the drill bit will self center in the wood - because the middle of the wood is turning at a lower speed than the outside.

Great information and I like your take on handplanes and experience with them. I agree a number 5 is a great all around plane and it was my first and my goto. I only have 3 planes at this time. A type 16 #5, a type 11 #4 and a number 60 1/2 block plane. I use the #5 and small 601/2 most of the time. I would like a low angle jack plane next.
