Day one started with a 13 mile gravel road climb before dropping onto Lower Porcupine Single Track. I fueled according to my plan, but still suffered a few leg cramps on the single track, but I was able to recover while riding and had a decent day on the bike! #cycling #mountainbiking #biking #race #moab #utah #porcupinerim #moabrocks #stage1 #otterhausracing #thunderbearrides

Great for the trainer! Good to hear you struggling on that back third of the course too!
Yeah, it was a rough one!
Thanks yet again. Super footage. Love the shot of you with Syd and Macky. Hoping to hook up with Syd's dad to chat about the race. He's done and is closer to my age and lives near me in Santa Fe area.
Thanks for sharing your "director's cut." I'll be doing Moab Rocks 2025 and your videos are helping me visualize the race course.
@@jamesglover3301 That’s awesome, you’re going to have a blast! I won’t be able to make it there this year, so I’m pretty jealous!
I can hear those drums a pound and what is the greatest feeling in the world isn’t it. I am out bike ride myself since 1990. I’m 70 years old now and I’m not gonna quit. God bless good luck. Watching your head cam doesn’t do it justice. That’s a very technical trailer. I don’t know exactly where this is in Moab. I ride in Moab a lot.

Hope you add stage 2 and 3 as well.
Stay tuned!
That’s where mtb looks fun
Moab is an absolute blast on a MTB.
7:00 Your totally good to keep asking for chances to pass. And just looking at the footage they should have done a better job at identifying possible spots for you to get by. Anyways Nice vid and good job 🤙
Oh, this video took me back to September 1994. This was my very first hike down, camping at Indian Gardens. I had to book a site 5 months in advance. A hike to Plateau Point gave me an awesome view of the river. On this occasion i didn't go to the river, but continued down to the start of the zig zags and returned to my campsite, big mistake. Made up for it since from both rims down to the river, Rim to Rim. Oldtimer Englishman reliving past adventures with you now. I've enjoyed your journey so much, I've saved it to watch during the drab, dank winters here in England. I'm now eighty, so visits to your wonderful Southwest are over, sadly....ps., it did seem strange watching your thighs/ legs whilst walking over the Kiabab bridge though ??
Beautiful panoramic views my friend! What a stunning place 👌

Much appreciate the bike support! We missed you at Meeks Mountain though and hope all is OK!
Unfortunately I had car trouble and had to abandon my trip. Congratulations on the win, both at Meeks, and the overall series! Maybe next year I'll be able to place in the series...lol
Great video!!!!!!👌👌👌👍👍👍🙌🙌🙌👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
Are you riding a mountain bike designed for downhill? They usually have really soft floaty suspension with lots of travel. Your suspension seems pretty rigid.
I was riding a Yeti SB150
@@trihalfmatt The Yeti SB150 looks like a beautiful bike. I know that you can adjust how soft and rigid the front and back suspension are. Perhaps you could have adjusted them to give you a smoother ride. I've only rented downhill mt. bikes and they've been pretty smooth over trails like that. Of course a softer tire pressure can also help smooth the ride. A smoother line helps too. I used to race mt. bikes with no suspension. I was good at bumpy downhills because I would take the smoothest lines. There is also an optimal speed for smoothness. It's amazing when all the pieces fit together and you're flying down a bumpy trail and hardly feeling it.
So much wanting to do this ✊🏻 what’s a great beginner low budget bike one would get.
@@damonwayne3307 entry level bikes, Trek Marlin 8 V3, Specialized rockhopper. Mid level bike, Specialized Chisel(amazing bike for the price).
Nice bike dude
awesome 10/10 enjoyed a lot 4k perfect
Love the videos. Thanks so much. Really gave me a nice feel for all three days. Will be making Moab Rocks my first stage race. FYI, I'm from Santa Fe, New Mexico and know Syd & Macky who live nearby in Los Alamos. Great people for sure!
Is the fork better then the Judy?
Yes, way better.
I rode Cacapon pre-thunderstruck build and North Zyler was exciting on my cross country bike. I remember a chest high tree on the trail (yikes!) and your "Holy Cow" boulder field. I decided the risk reward was a bit too high, but many good trails at the park! Congrats on taking this race on!
Thanks Dwight! North Ziler caught me off guard because I rode it the weekend before and knew it was tough but after all of the traffic it saw this weekend with the moisture it was scary, for sure!
The rock to Dirt ratio does not look appealing.
😂
I am the shoe lace guy! Holy shit. So happy you caught that encounter. See you next year!
You were moving! I think you even passed me on the climb out on Gemini bridges road too😃
@@trihalfmatt You had me on all the downhills. Looks like we finished within 23 seconds, and you and i were 5:30 apart for the three days. That first and third race were my favorite.
would it start?
It was running while I took the video, so yes it would start
@@trihalfmatt i have a 2017 6.2 f-250 with crank with no start. replaced fuel pump still doing the same thing replaced fuel pump driver module no change. noticed i was getting an arc on driver side front 2 ignition coils and passenger front ignition coil, the truck will not start. do you think its related to the no start?
@@thomasheck1 I can’t say for certain but I wouldn’t think so.
@@trihalfmatt I just ordered all 8.
@@thomasheck1 yes it would
Love to see mountain ride.
Great job.💯
What tire combo did you use for the race?
Video forthcoming
watched all 3 of the stages you posted-great stuff. for someone targeting this event for 2025, what would you say were the biggest differences between your expectations and your actual experience? thanks.
That's an excellent question. On stage one, the climb was as expected, long and never ending...lol, but I was not prepared for how tough the single track on LPS was. I walked more features than I thought I would. Stage 2, I was not expecting it to be the hardest day of the 3, but it was. It was just a relentless onslaught of punchy, techy, rock features, my upper body was so sore after that day. Stage 3, I was not expecting to have so much fun on the single track, and I was not prepared for the climb back out on Gemini bridges road, that was a tough one. My overall take away, GoPro definitely minimizes the features and no amount of FPV will prepare you for it. My #1 recommendation go out and ride as much rocky black diamond trails(up and down) that you can and you'll have a much better experience than those that don't prepare for it(and there were people who were not prepared for it!).
Also, hitting the weights twice a week paid off for me too.
@@trihalfmatt thanks so much for the thoughtful feedback, this is very helpful for my training. noticed a picture of you with Mackey F. watching their. channel is how I got interested in this event. when i saw rhier video of stage 2 it really came across how brutal that course was. will be in Moab first week in June on vacation. Plan to ride a number of these places, but I won’t be pedaling up sands flat road. maybe I should not pass up the “opportunity” to do a 13 mile climb? that has to sink in some.
I would skip riding up sand flats road, you can train on any climb, but I would definitely ride the LPS section for stage 1, that was the one day that caught me off guard.
Love the vids man.
10 minutes into the video-excellent coverage! would like to do this race in 2025 and this is the type of video and riding that is comparable to my level. The pros post some awesome videos but this is far more relatable and informative for me.
Thanks for stopping to ask about me. I had a broken ulna in the end.
I’m sorry about that man, heal up fast!
Are we going to get some Mountwood footage?
Yes, hopefully by the weekend
Great footage. Any chance you can post some links or gpx files from some of your videos? Would love to ride them, but at a very casual pace.
I added links to GPX files on the the first two Moab videos ;-)
it's a dick pass because you had no chance of winning.
Sorry… it was kinda of a dick pass. You should have at least called out your move first.
Fair, I guess I’m just used to Crit racing…lol
Looks like you had a good race with no wrecks. How did you handle the elevation? The snow was great and the camera caught the views well! On that pass, well, passes like that happen sometimes, riders just have to realize that and not have thin skin. All the best in the series!
Good question! I think because I arrived a few days early, I was able to do a little acclimating to the higher altitude. Although my power numbers did drop off by the time I reached the top, I didn’t feel like I was having a hard time catching my breath.
Nice! Looks like a fun time out west. Better than hike a bike here.
It was blast!
That was me in the white jersey for the first 10 minutes with my place in the conga line. Pretty cool to see Mitch - one of our NICA riders - in the video from 14:15 - 25:11. Great footage!
Nice video. I think the title is a bit alarmist though, haha.
That was me that got my wheel taken out!
OOOOF, sorry to hear that!
Nice!!! What size is the bike?
A large🙂

My favorite trail to ride in Sedona! Hiline 🫡🫡😍😍
You can have the rock gardens give me something flowy!
Thunderstruck. Looks like you're trying to hold onto a paint shaker.
😂 accurate
Good job ! But.... you have no business riding a double black, sorry but listen. You'll improve your skills and confidence sooo much more on trails that are at or just above your level. Ive only attempted hiline once so I know what I'm talknbout . Enjoyed your video 👍
Congratulations. Glad to see what the trial is actually like. I’m sure some riders edit some of the unridable stuff out.
Isn't this slim shady?
The last part of the video may have been portions of Slim Shady, but the majority of the video is Hiline.
Congratulations! So happy to see average riders posting videos, this trail is a double black for a reason 👍
wow! so sleek and low pro, would you say it's OK for commuting (like carrying it around your shoulder for 2-3 minutes while you change metro, train, etc.?)
I think so
