Переглядів 1392 роки тому
This video tells the story of Mare Island, the Cold War and the USS VALLEJO. Today the sail of that nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine is a monument located at the same position in the former Mare Island Naval Shipyard building ways where the submarine was built and launched at the height of the Cold War in 1965. If you visit the monument there is a QR code on a stainless steel plaque ...

This 40 minute video covers how and why Mare Island Naval Shipyard came to be and the critical role that it played in our Navy and our National Story during its 142 years of operation. In those years, our country was torn apart by our bloodiest war and upon emerging from that conflict with the outbreak of the Spanish American War our nation transitioned from its isolationistic roots to ascend t...

Aka. Nightmare Island. MarDet USS Coral Sea and used the facility to do our pistol qualifications 1977-78
I remember Drum fitting out when I attended Nuclear Power School at Mare Island in 1970.
I grew up in Concord, right across the bridge from Vallejo and never even knew subs were built or worked on there till we got our assignments at the end of sub school. One of my classmates got assigned to the Russel. Saw it in Norfolk one morning with its dry deck shelter. My shipmate must have had some interesting duty.
Ty chief very enjoyed the flick USN ret 11/6/76-12/31/05
I lived on the Island from Late 1960 to late1962 when my father was stationed there. Saw submarines being built and saw remnants of the old WWII fleet subs.
Ok. I was there at CSTSC in '81 Data systems "A" school. Every once in a while u would see a sub pulling in or headed out. I liked that base. Was isolated and vast.
Grew up in Napa in the 50's and early 60's, many of my friend's dads worked here. In '68 the Navy sent me to Nuclear Power Plant Operators School up at the north end of the island.
So your decision was to close both long beach and mare island? In reality they ended up closing, long beach, mare island, hunters point, treasure island, alameda, concord weapons station, ruff and ready island, moffitt field, the presidio, and I'm sure I'm missing a few. They decimated whole communities, and people's lives. Now mare islands yard has finally opened back up and the Navy is now bringing ships back for maintenance.....which tells you they should have kept it and downsized but not completely close the base.
I smoke hella weed on mare island
Hawkbill SSN-666
Seawolf SSN 575 ! Project boat !
Worked Mare Island from 1960 to 1987. FINE people and could make ANYTHING!
I worked in Shop 11 from 1977 to 1982.
And I lost my job 3 years later..as a single mom of 2 boys back then it was devastating!
My father was stationed at Mare Island while in the navy as a submariner and went to work there as a civilian upon getting out of the navy. He called shops 36 & 67 home. I spent a lot of time fishing the water front, public pier and the end of lemon st. All the while staring across at the subs wondering which one Dad was working on... Miss ya Pop!!!!
Close all Cali bases
The Olympia is, in fact, the oldest surviving steel warship. The hull of the Warrior was entirely made of iron. The first steel-hulled ship was the French ironclad Redoubtable which was launched in 1876 but it was sold off in 1911 and scrapped a bit later.
There was no real need to close mare island
disgusting.
Attended CSTSC in '87
Seawolf.....SSN575 . ????!
I served briefly on the Seawolf. Jan 1974.
@@JamesSmith-tb7is .......I was a TM on The Seawolf ! You are the first person that served on her on UA-cam ! I still talk to my old buddies . Was it a project boat when you served on her? Our missions were stated in the book , Blind Man's Bluff . Do you know about cables or retrieval of missle parts on sea bed . Sea of Okhotsk , 1983 !
George, I was a commissayman only on board for 6 months the transferred to a surface craft. However, I did go on sea excursions where we lowered that retrieval apparatus down to retrieval items on the ocean floor.
1977 to 1982 I worked as a shipfitter in shop 11 and got an opportunity to work on the Seawolf one time in drydock one. Crawled in every part of the ship to visualize how everything worked while I was at sea on those few occasions.
@@JamesSmith-tb7is .......did you see the " thrusters " on the Seawolf or area D added for retrieval ? Our ELB was welded to the superstructure ! Lol 😂 !
anyone from sub development group #1 ?
They are planning to put the U.S.S. Texas on land. Should do the same for Olympia if ever possible.

Enjoyed it very much Chief, Been working at the VA Clinic there and i've been curious about the history.
Thank you so much. I watched many of the boats go down the ways. My Dad was the Assistant Fire Chief of Central Station and as a young man Dad often let me ride the fire truck to the lunch site. We had to be there because they used explosive bolts to let the boats go down the ways, a fire hazard. I have some catches from many of the boats as well as programs which match the catches.
You probably dont give a damn but does anyone know a tool to get back into an instagram account? I was dumb lost the password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me
