Midwest emo is about people making music knowing it won’t take them anywhere. This is no riches or fame Midwest emo can bring anyone. So it pure and honest and risky and utterly heartfelt. People spill out all they can in each song knowing they may only have one moment of luck to get them another gig or album deal. It’s a genre of scraping by and wishing for a kind of love that doesn’t exist.

This was the emo I was in on. I'm now a 50+ black man in the southeast of Tennessee and still Love this era of emo. I'm not too big into 3rd wave, I was listening to a bunch of other stuff as that came out though I have checked out Paramore since then. I heard certain songs out and about but didn't listen to the radio or watch much TV so I didn't always know who was who. I went on a stoner metal/desert rock bender and a post rock jag for a while. Somewhere I randomly heard The World is A Beautiful Place and fell in LOVE! Watching this, I reckon they are considered 4th wave? Cool. I'll have to check out some more of it. I've also meant to check out the 1st incarnations as well. Good video. I've had it in my Watch Later list for a year, maybe? Decided to watch it tonight. ✌🏾🌬️🍂

Ive been listening to midwest emo and math rock since i was about 13-14 in my first years in high school, it has stuck with me since then due to the fact that I grew up in a broken home filled with hate and addiction and midwest emo's relatability was the first and only embrace of familiarity my 14 year old self felt, it was amazing, and by god as much as i hated everything, it is the only thing I miss.

If I’m being 100% completely honest out of all of the emo genres Midwest and post hardcore are the ones that will stick with me because a lot of them i relate to.its probably one of my favorite type of emo genres because of how dark it is but you know somehow its gonna be better in the end .

I lived the first few years of my life in Urbana, in the neighborhood where the American Football house was located. I never liked midwest emo at all, but I'm glad it had shed some light on my region. Whenever I do go down to the Champagne-Urbana area, I always make sure I stop by the American Football house.

I feel like fourth age is off by a bit. A lot of the 2010s music started around 2008/2009 and by 2013 it was starting to die out again. The "basement bands" with basement shows with ties closer to the 90s emo and experimental sounds is definitely characterized by the 2008-2013 wave not 2013 and later. We're arguably in our fifth age of emo from 2015 to today. Also no mention of La Dispute?

To be honest, East was my favorite song off of FOC when it first dropped. It felt like an extension to the vibe of some of my favorite songs by him like Wind In My Sails and Hat Trick. It's just got that ancient piratey grit to it and I rock with it HEAVY. The memes were funny at first, but I feel like the cultural impact this song will have has yet to even be fully recognized. People laugh at it now, but I feel like this song will be really important once the time comes that people understand it. In other words, I think it's MAD ahead of it's time.

I’m not Midwest, but in Montana, I got to see a good mixture of northwest grunge and hardcore and more technically talented mw emo bands from the dakotas and deeper into the Midwest . Grunge is talked about so much more so I appreciate the breakdown. Very nice work.
