Hey hey! I'm Becky and I'm here to share my love for parks and the outdoors with the world. I'm a parks and recreation professional and believe in the power of recreation to transform lives.
Inclusive Play by Design with Jill Moore
In this episode, Becky sits down with Jill Moore, Inclusive Play Specialist at Landscape Structures, to discuss what a playground really means to be inclusive. We talk about the definition of accessible versus inclusive (and why they're so different!). Jill opened my eyes to our need to involve people of all backgrounds and abilities to the table when it comes to planning and designing our parks. There is so much to learn when designing our parks to be safe spaces for our children to take risks and grow as human beings. I am so excited to share this episode with you! A big thank you to Landscape Structures for sponsoring this video!

Parks and Recreation Apps for Agencies

I look at some of the parks and recreation apps out there and review my favorite features and not-so-great features. Technology allows government agencies to better communicate with their communities. Apps are a great way to stay relevant, but may not always be necessary. Check out the video and let me know your thoughts. Are there other apps that I should review? Write them in the comments! Fo...

My name is Joel I'm wanting a full time job with parks and recreation with windel
Hi! I see you havent posted in awhile. I was really hoping to learn more. Also, your linkedin link in your bio no longer works. I was interested in connecting!
Are you still in parks?
Hey Becky, I tried to go to your website to see your study guide and was unable to get there. An error kept popping up.
Same for me as well
I just graduated highschool and I wondered what it would be like to work for my city. Sounds like a good career
Your company you work for is called Green-what?
I love these videos please post again
I really want to work at a community centre or something like that, maybe a recreational program and starting out as a clerk. I was discouraged cause it’s not stem job or degree people say anything other than that is useless but this video made me a bit more confident :)
Thank you Becky, this is a great video. I am in the process of submitting my application now. Can't wait to be CPRP Certified!
@Beckytalksparks great informational video..
It’s Leslie knope
Is a bachelor's degree required to get into this field? Can I major in business and get into parks and recs? Thank you
Hey! A bachelor's degree specific to the field isn't required but depending on your role, an agency might prefer that degree. A lot of professionals start in other career paths with other degrees like business and move into the field. However, to be a CPRP, you need to have at least 3 years full time experience in the field if you're going for a degree outside recreation/parks.
@@beckytalksparks5364 thank you so much! Would an associate degree in the field work as well?
I think it totally depends on the role you are applying for. If you look on governmentjobs.com for the type of ideal job that you want, then see the min. Education requirements. That will give you a better idea.
Seems like a dream job. :) By the way, what can you say about the parks and recs sitcom? Are there situations there that resemble reality or none of them give a good representation?
I touched on the show a little bit in my latest video about misconceptions about the field but that's a great topic for another video by itself!
@@beckytalksparks5364 awesome! I'm thrilled to see your reaction!
Hello, Becky! This video was very helpful for me because I'd love to work in the Parks & Recreation field. I currently work with an organization that provides funding for local parks & similar organizations that help protect our environment. However, I have always wanted to work in the field specific to the parks themselves. Your video helped me to understand what different types of positions are available in this field as well as how to try out each position by looking into volunteer and temporary positions. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much Jenna! What a thoughtful comment :) I really appreciate the feedback and I'm so so glad it was helpful. Good luck with your move into the field, and I wish you the best! If you haven't checked out the Let's Talk Parks podcast, it will also help you understand more about the field!
Thank you so much for the details and the honesty.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much for watching :)
Very useful.
Glad you think so!
Do you have any suggestions on a major that would be a great combination with this degree?
There are a lot of different degrees for parks and recreation - some by many names. For instance, mine was "Natural Resources Recreation and Tourism" Some go by "Parks and Recreation" or "Outdoor Recreation" or "Leisure Studies." This seems like a good idea for a future video. :)
@@beckytalksparks5364 well what i am referring to is a another major outside of Recreation Parks and tourism management that can serve as a great backup/ motivating factor for employers to hire you and even pay better. For example, if you have a degree in IT this may be useful when working at the office preparing programs for ranger talks or doing research. Do you get what i am saying? I ask this because being in this field doesn't pay much but when you have another major in your back pocket this can help you get a better pay and get that job as well
@@jarlymoyadelgado6697 Yes I think I understand now. I think our field is generally moving to become more business minded - so anything related to business or accounting - you could become an analyst or be more involved in the executive level type of positions. If you went with a marketing degree, you could assist with graphic design, brochure development, social media, etc. Or like you mentioned you could go the IT route and be more involved with innovations, mapping, etc. . I'm not sure if it helps income wise, but I've also seen people utilize wildlife or forestry degrees as well.
@@beckytalksparks5364 thank you, i appreciate these suggestions! I think that would be a cool video to make, talking about other degrees that can add value to your recreation degree!
It's been a year since you put out a video and 2.2k views is pretty good. Think of it like going to a small town festival and you have TWO THOUSAND fans enjoying your music, would you stop creating music after seeing that many fans or would you be motivated to make more music to continue to make those fans happy 😊
Hi Becky, thanks for the video. I was surprised to hear that there are math questions involved in the exam. I'm currently going through the prep courses and there haven't been any math-related questions mentioned/required (outside of 2 equations for price-setting). Any insight as to what kind of math questions were asked?
Hwllo Becky, I have worked as a Recreation Leader 2 since, 2016 of March. I work at the youth center in town. I have my Associate in Arts in Liberal Arts, and my Associates in Science in Recreation Management. I would like to experience more Parks and Recreation experiences. Would you have any advice? I am part time, and am disabled. I do use a power wheelchair to get around, and do not drive a vehicle. My job is maybe 5 minutes away from my house.
Hey Ryan - Volunteer opportunities are always interesting to explore. You never know who you may meet. I would also recommend starting to look at other park/recreation providers in your area. My advice is to look at your specific strengths at your current job and what you love, and then to find opportunities for you to continue to excel in those areas. Make sure that resume and cover letter are up to date and be open to new opportunities! Hope that helps.
Just requested to join the group on Facebook!
This is great! I agree that there are not a lot of resources out there for people looking into the parks & rec field. I look forward to seeing more videos from you Becky!
Thanks Arin! I"m glad you liked it. Let me know if you have any suggestions for future videos!
@@beckytalksparks5364 I’m always at the park I didn’t show up for week I’m always doing pull ups and push ups manger came looking for me cool guy I go silent . When don’t wanna be bother

Thanks for the video Becky. When you took your test was the communication section on it as well? Also do you feel like the questions, tests, and other information from the modules provided a good replica for exam type questions in regards to questions on the actual exam?
Hey Devin. Yes - the communication section was on there. I felt like have a variety of different study materials and taking different test exams (from the books and from the online modules) were sufficient preparation for the exam. It's important to know the glossary terms, which is why the flash cards are helpful too. The format of the questions seemed consistent with what I had studied. The most difficult part for me was that many of the common sense questions (what I would do if it happened IRL) weren't the right answers... so that's why understanding the logic behind the answers is so important.
Man I did this and it was so fun
Nice video
Jarred’s animations thanks! It was one of my first!
Thank you so much for explaining this framework, you made it clearer for me to understand the ROS. Cheers
Thanks for watching! Glad it helped.
