MoIP Webinar: Understanding Plant Invasions Using a Traits-based Framework
The ability to forecast the invasive dynamics (e.g., establishment and impacts) of non-native plants is of critical importance to the prevention and mitigation of biological invasions. Over the last 30 years, significant work has been dedicated to identifying species traits that are generalizable enough to consistently predict which species are likely to become successful invaders. Species traits are a useful framework for characterizing invasiveness, as they are measurable proxies for mechanisms involved in resource acquisition, dispersal and reproduction, indicating how an organism interacts with others and its surrounding environment. However, despite an extensive body of research dedicated to this purpose, scientists still lack a reliable framework for traits-based invasion forecasting. In this webinar, hear from Dr. Gabriela Nunez-Mir to learn about her research to resolve this critical gap in invasion theory and practice. Her presentation will explore how her research program addresses the limitations of previous efforts by approaching the study of mechanisms of invasion and their associated species traits macroecologically, which involves investigating the dynamics of hundreds of invasive plant species in different ecosystems across the continental United States.
Dr. Gabriela Nunez-Mir is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago. As a quantitative ecologist, her research focuses on leveraging the wealth of knowledge held within large bodies of ecological data to investigate the dynamics of biological invasions and other subjects of conservation concern. The innovative statistical techniques she employs, including machine-learning, Bayesian and geospatial methods, have allowed Gabriela to produce findings that are uniquely useful in that they are broadly applicable across geographic and taxonomic contexts. Gabriela obtained her Ph.D. from the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources at Purdue University in 2018. Prior to joining the faculty of UIC in 2022, Gabriela was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Virginia Commonwealth University, studying the range dynamics of spongy moth (Lymantria dispar).

Do you guys have anyone in South georgia?
Thank you !!
the early successional species ARE the magic cover crop you're looking for, OMG!!!! (shock and awe). I can't believe it's not soy! To provide an expert answer to the question of whether to plant late successional species at the initial seeding of a praire restoration, pay me lots of money and I'll tell you. Seriously though, it's a good question, obviously the person that asked it is on the right track of thinking and understands you want to work with natural processes and stages of succession.
Wow how many!
Thank you for presenting such an excellent program!
Thank you ❤ I have always wanted to restore the Native plants ♥ I'm on Gravois Creek, with woods behind me. But, invasive Japanese "Honeysuckle" has resulted in the loss of all the understory.
This presentation is absolutely wonderful! Thank you so much from Boston, Ma.
Just wondering what components are in your potting mix. I was thinking of mixing coco coir with compost in equal parts and excluding perlite. What do you think?
Hello! i wont be confined by what my plant nursery carries. I will find the plants i want to find
Ohio Spiderwort for disturbed or new tall-grass prairie Virginia Spiderwort for woodlands Pr.Spiderwort (Tradescantia brateaica) for glades and short-grass prairies
One of the trees I've never been a huge fan of (in my yard anyway) is the Sweet Gum Tree. Here recently, my wife noticed the American Gold Finches eating the seeds from the Sweet Gum Balls. That was pretty cool. I have a question for you guys. If I try to propagate some limbs from an Eastern Red Cedar, and make sure to get the cuttings from a tree with the Juniper Berries, will that ensure the tree will produce the Juniper Berries when it matures? I want a tree that'll produce the berries in hopes of attracting the Cedar Waxwings.
My son is all for preserving and restoring prairies and woodlands he is glad to hear all this!
Very inspiring presentation...!
FYI: You REALLY DO Need to get rolls of "deer netting", and cut pieces to fit across the outside glass window, or door, and tape it there, to cover the entire expanse of glass so that the approaching bird will see it, before they impact the glass, and get killed, or injured!
THANK YOU, FOR THESE SUGGESTIONS, FOR NATIVE SPECIES HABITAT GARDENING!!! IMHO: BEING "NEAT & TIDY", IS A MENTAL DISORDER, AND THE GARDENER NEEDS TO DETOX THEIR MIND!
PLEASE, BE SURE TO LEAVE ANY, AND ALL OF THE OLD MILKWEED STALKS, ALL THE WAY THRU THE FOLLOWING SUMMER!!!...BECAUSE ORIOLES WILL STRIP OFF THE LONG STRANDS OF FIBERS, FRON THOSE STALKS, AND USE THEM TO WEAVE THEIR WONDERFUL NESTS!!!
When you have a lot of birds in your yard it sends a message to birds that they are welcome there. That there are resources there. Then they find the plants you planted for them faster.
That’s probably one major benefit of birdfeeders.
Something is eating zinnias though, because there are always holes in the leaves. They are beneficial to a degree because the goldfinches eat the seeds, and they are an almost season long supply of nectar and pollen.
Brightly colored flowers act like traffic signs for bugs/pollinators, they draw them to check out your plants and discover the host plants in your yard.
I going to recommend the GrowIt BuildIT channel here on UA-cam. Great videos on winter sowing and videos of him growing native plants from seed.
This was incredible! Loved the integration of art analysis as well! I’m planning a very cottage garden themed food forest design on my plot! With a focus on edible landscaping in the front yard, wanting it to very much blend in and just look like a beautiful garden!
This presentation was really refreshing!! So many times, there’s so many rules to starting native plantings. It’s nice to hear to just put the plants in or just sow the seed. It doesn’t have to be perfect.
I'm sorry for the few people who just chose to complain or correct you in the comments. I appreciate your taking the time to put this presentation together & enjoyed it greatly! I took notes to implement some of these ideas in my _dream yard to-do_ list. Thank you again from central Illinois!
I’ve watched a number of similar presentations. Most of which closely follow Doug Taulamy’s books and presentations. While his materials great, I thank you for taking the time to bring in and present a broader set information.
Would love timestamps on each section ❤
My math nerd two cents. Plants on 18'' spacings are 1 1/2 feet (or 1.5 ft) apart on both sides. - To find that square footage each plant occupies, multiply 1.5 ft x 1.5 ft, which equals 2.25 sq. ft. - To find the number of plants, divide the total square footage by 2.25 sq. ft. - So, using the 1886 sq. ft. in the Laura Engles Wilder Museum example, you'd need 838 plants. This makes it easy to figure plant numbers by different spacings. For instance, 15 in spacings are 1.25 feet, so you'd divide by 1.6 plants per sq. ft. So you'd need almost 1,200 plants. While on 20 in. spacings, or 1.7 feet, you'd divide by 1.7 squared (2.9 sq, ft.) and would only need 650 plants. Okay. My apologies. When I see a math problem I have to explain it since it makes sense to me. Cheers, and nerd, out...
😘
So helpful. I love being able to see what the plants on my list could look like.
Missouri is not in the Midwest, it's a plains/prairie state. Big difference.
Wonderful, information video! I so appreciate learning and hearing about everything shared. Hope to learn more over time as well. I will look forward to more content from this channel. Paula
I know I planted the roundleaf groundsel at our new house (because the package is empty) but I can't find my note as to WHERE I planted it. (Oy.) will the 1st year foliage be pushing out already?
Knowledgeable.Every other word is uhm or uh which is distracting.
That’s the most helpful info I’ve seen concerning urban native gardening. The yearly progression photos especially. Thank you!
Call me crazy but,,,, every farmer owes a slice if his land to be restored to this practice. His soils are a product of it.
Adding round up...and comparing to farmers use is unacceptable
Such a detailed and useful presentation. I did screen shots of his plant suggestions. TY!
Alright
Nice
I would to love to learn more.
Just little crumbs are all that's left of true prairie habitat. Good info. Like the talk about soil microbiome.
I'm liking the pretty pollinator collection..idea...to start.
The proposed climate change mitigations won't work. Chevron's CEO explains why: "If we were to shut down every vehicle on the planet today - every car, truck, ship, train, subway, airplane, we would reduce greenhouse emission by about 15%. So these greenhouse goals that are out there are based on good intentions, but not in any realistic assessment of the situation. So I think the odds of a 50% reduction in greenhouse emissions by 2050 are very, very low because there are billions of people on this planet that are moving up the scale of lifestyle and they will consume more energy to do that. You cannot turn back the tides of progress in these parts of the world."
Chevron. The company that trashes the environment all over the world is your source?
thanks!
I'm glad to find this online. I had scheduled a couple of programs from St. Louis Audubon Society for 2020 for my library, but then COVID19 hit. Looking forward to having the Bring Conservation Home come to my house.
I really enjoyed this.
Thanks for posting! I can really relate to the garden at the 23 minute mark. Hoping to reign it in this year!
This was a wonderful presentation!
I'm interested in the hedge trimming bar he puts on his trimmer - can you provide a link? Note - I personally use a hedge trimmer and it works well for cleanup.
