Hi! I'm Dr Alexia Mellor, and I started the Mystic Dog Mama podcast after rescuing my soul dog, Lucky. Join me and my amazing guests as we explore the beauty of the human-dog connection. Mystic Dog Mama looks at how we can best nourish our dogs - and ourselves - mind, body, and soul, and asks what our dogs are teaching us about what it really means to be human. EP 69: Recognizing the Hidden Aspects of Your Dog's Pain with Yaz Porritt
Today, I am speaking with Yaz Porritt of Yorkshire Pooches Therapies. Yaz is a Canine Massage Therapist and Applied Herbal Choices Consultant who specialises in a whole-dog and whole-person approach to canine pain management and support.
Pain is a complex topic, and we definitely dive deep. This is a really special conversation where we talk about pain from a variety of perspectives, including more of the energetic and mystical aspects of how and why the body stores trauma, in addition to the more “practical” aspects of pain. As Yaz says, we have to look at pain as having both physical and emotional experiences of pain, and we have to recognise that the body keeps the score well after a painful incident has occurred. This is where complementary support like zoopharmacognosy or Reiki, and other healing modalities can be really helpful.
Yaz shares:
* Her Four Pillars of Pain and how you can use these to better understand what is going on with your dog
* Holistic approaches to pain management
* Supporting joint health and pain through nutrition
Yaz also talks about how a behaviour like resource guarding might actually have a pain problem at its root, and how changes in your dog’s fur direction can be a subtle sign that your dog is in pain.
She also gives a rundown on what to do about the top 3 joint issues you guys share with me:
* hip dysplasia
* osteoarthritis
* luxating patellas
And we cover some of the most common supplements and pharmaceutical options you may come across, to help you make more informed decisions.
As you can see, this is a chock full episode that I know you are going to love!
If you enjoy a whole-dog, whole-person approach to your dog’s health with a spiritual touch like we talk about today, come join Stacey Renphrey of Hozho Hounds and me in our brand new F.E.T.C.H. community where we’ll share with you the very same framework we use in our canine nutrition practices to help get to the root of health challenges and get your dog on the pathway to optimal health. Lion's Gate Special: Where the Lion Meets the Dog, An Auspicious Time to Create the Life You Want
The power of plants is mind blowing, the more you learn/feel/communicate the more mind blowing it is 💚🌿 I think you'd love a conversation with Rachael Maxwell from Animal Botanicals, another inspiring woman spreading and teaching the plant love message 💚🌿
Thank you for both the feedback and recommendation! <3 And yes, I totally agree with you that plants are simply magical 🌟
Wonderful information! Thank you for sharing this - it is an important seed to plant for the future of our dogs❤
I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Robyn! Thank you so much for letting me know! Are there any other topics you'd like me to make sure to cover on the podcast? I'm all ears!
Another great offering, I could listen to you two talk for hours! Particularly liked the weather analogy and the anxiety-may-not-be-yours-or-your-dogs - let it pass through you. Thanks both ❤️
Aww, thank you, Anna! So glad you enjoyed it! I love the weather analogy, too. It's so helpful. Let me know what other topics you'd like me to cover - as you know, I'm all ears 😀
Alexia, I am beyond grateful for you creating and curating this space. I've not come across another place that brings together these different aspects of myself - the mystic and the dog mum - together. Thank you for being brave and encouraging others to be as well. Coincidentally my guiding words in the last few months have been Ease, Grace and Confidence. Love to you and Lucky and I look forward to hearing more from you ❤️🐶❤️
Aww, Anna, thank you for such a sweet and beautiful comment - I'm truly touched! I can't tell you how much this means to me! And I love your guiding words of ease and confidence that you've added to grace - just perfect! Wishing you and Sami a very happy and healthy new year! 🐶💖
Such a beautiful, expansive and inspiring conversation. Thank you 🩵✨
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment :)
Fascinating, thank you both. Makes sense now why my dog eats cow shit and can break down bones but not chickpeas!
So glad you enjoyed it!
I find it really interesting that probiotics, that are the go to for any vet/holistic practitioners, isn't the holy grail of healing gut issues. I've yet to find one that has suited my pooch, including being a part of a trial. Obviously there's variables but after H pylori she had gravy-like diarrhoea. And other recommendations really haven't helped. So thank you for being the first professionals I've heard talk about this ❤
Thank you so much for sharing, and I'm glad you found this conversation helpful! There is definitely no one "holy grail" or "silver bullet," and oftentimes we need to take a step back and simplify before adding in loads of supplements. Keep an eye out for the episode I'm releasing on the 19th with Dr Carol Hughes on the canine microbiome - I think you'll really find it helpful! ❤🐶
After a few private consultations with Alexia, my 8-1/2 year old 60 lb. dog was switched from kibble to a raw food diet. Within a few months, she gain a few pounds of muscle mass, her coat became thicker and healthier than it had ever been, and her energy level soared. Now 11 years old, people can’t believe she’s that old based on her puppy-like energy level. Since she now gets moisture in her food, she doesn’t drink as much water. Her waste is much smaller since the diet is so efficient. After 4 mile walks she insists on playing ball, frisbee and tug of war as soon as we get home. All the tarter and plaque have disappeared from her teeth. My sessions with Alexia were worth every dollar. So grateful for all we have learned. Alexia has a talent for tailoring her wisdom to teach a dog owner in a way that makes it easy to understand and implement. Thank you!
Thank you so much, this makes me unbelievably happy! <3
Recall during the chase doesn't work, even the strongest one
Hi Julia, thanks for your comment! I think Simone would agree with you, that's why she emphasises teaching your dog alternative behaviours and reinforcing them outside of those triggered situations. Be well!
My husky mix will dissect. My lab has the kill bite. She's caught two cats. I need this training so badly.
My lab is a big ball player but still has this desire
@@Auser12349 Thank you for commenting! Simone has some great books and resources that will hopefully be helpful to you with both your dogs!

@@MysticDogMama appreciated. What's on my mind a lot these days is the amount of "advice" given to be part of a community as times around us begin to implode. I am a loner. I spend 95% of my time at home, in a rural area and tend to dogs (mine and those in the "street") who need tending. Am I "more at risk" tending to animals, nature and my lonesome self than being caught up in a community? Please take care as our world reaches fever pitch (and I hide in my quiet beautiful corner)!! Hugs galore. ♡♡
Love this ❤
I'm so happy to hear this, thank you for letting me know! <3 What resonated most with you? I was really struck by the canary in the coal mine analogy!
@@MysticDogMama I really love the idea of a place of wellness for dogs, at times I've felt like we needed a project manager and definitely could have done with someone looking at the over arching themes. And for that someone to be on board with the woo side of things. It seems a recent thing that the affects of trauma in dogs has been recognised, as well as their individual experience (thankfully). And the trauma of being a human guardian to said dogs! It's fairly recent I had a seemingly lovely trainer who just didn't accommodate for this. And loved the 'mosh pit at the dog park comnent'!
@@annaem5264 I agree with you, it feels like we are in the midst of a real paradigm shift, which is really exciting to see! Do you work within the rescue or training context? Is that what you meant by wishing you had a project manager who could help see the overarching themes? I totally get the need for this. As a creative practitioner and in my PhD research, this is what I looked at - helping communities, organisations, and individuals think beyond silos. It's so necessary, but perplexingly difficult for us to do! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, it's so lovely to connect with listeners!
@@MysticDogMama no, not working in the dog world just the guardian of a dog who struggles sometimes. I was thinking more like a triage type service who would 'project manage' for example: 'I see you are both dysregulated so start with this gentle flower remedy and TTouch. As a human maybe singing and chanting, for the dog ACE freework. Avoid walks. I'll refer you to this nutritionist who can advise about supplements. We have this fear free vet on board who can visit at home. We won't invite a behaviourist yet'. A REALLY gentle and joined up approach. I've really struggled with finding a lovely vet for example. So thinking a multi disciplinary team who support holistically and kindly. Preferably a charity so affordable to more people. A big ask! My holistic vet refused a pain trial despite being advised by 2 behaviourists, an osteo and a trainer. It's so exhausting managing my girls behaviour, being hypervigilant, that I didnt have the energy to argue with the vet as well ❤️
@@annaem5264 I 100% agree with you about needing an overarching support system. Stay tuned! <3
Love love love this ❤
I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed it! If there are any other topics you'd like me to cover in future episodes, or guests you'd like to hear from, let me know! I'm all ears. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it!❤🐶
@@MysticDogMama wellll...my experience was very different - when I got my dog reactive rescue (first dog as an adult) it felt like I was getting cut off from my shamanic practice, my spirit guides disappeared, we were both unhappy and no one really understood. I love love love her but it's been exhausting. It's quite a long story and we're in a much better place now but maybe something about that? It can't just be me that had that experience can it?! 🐶❤️
@@annaem5264 That's really interesting! I can definitely relate to the exhaustion of having a reactive dog. I'll definitely bring up these questions with some guests I think might have insight. My experience with Lucky has definitely taught me about the embodied experience and brought me back into the everyday in a way that I think I was not necessarily acknowledging with my quest to connect to the spiritual, so no, you're not alone in that challenge. It's only recently that I have gotten into a much more integrated place. What a journey!! Thank you again for sharing, and I'm happy that you guys are in a much better place, and that you've experienced expansion through it ❤🐶
@@MysticDogMama thanks so much for your honest reply ❤️ it's really challenging trying to marry together the different aspects of ourselves and find any kind of balance. Especially when no one seems to understand! I remember thinking early on in our relationship 'there must be another way' - not training, not behaviourist and certainly not 'show them whose boss' bullshit. I'm not sure if the way of connection and supporting your dogs emotional experience was a thing back then or it was for some reason elusive to me. It's very isolating to think/feel differently and easy to get bogged down with the day to day grind of managing a dog with big feelings, earning a living, health issues (and menopause argh!). And struggling to see what was the meaning, what is being reflected? I still don't know. Before the dog I was in the woods all the time and I got matched with a dog who won't go to the woods, the thing that nurtured me more than anything. I'm pretty much in a place of acceptance and want to support her wellbeing but I'm still foxed by that. But can view it in a different way now. So it's very lovely to come across you with your down to earth approach to all things dog and mystical. I've met a few lovely people on this journey and approached them about doing a podcast with you - waiting to hear back. I follow 'canine connection' on insta, I reckon she'd be an interesting person to chat with. Sending love and gratitude from me and my girl ❤️🐶
@@annaem5264 Thank you for your kind words! That means a lot to me <3 And I hear ya!! Truly! I have recently gotten back into the habit of going for walks just by myself, or doing things I love that Lucky doesn't. At first I felt completely guilty leaving him at home, but I also realise that it's for my own physical, mental, and spiritual health, and that if I'm not in a good place, I'm no good to Lucky. I don't know if that's an option for you? I've just recorded some interviews that will be coming out next week and in April that I think you'll get a lot out of😁And thank you for the IG recommendation, as well as reaching out to others about the podcast! I really do appreciate it!
Absolutely loved this, I feel like I've found my people ❤🐶
