Pump Up The Jam /Technotronic - Novation Circuit Tracks version
In need of some fun I watched a @Doctormix video and came up with this version of the 1989 club classic. House music hits the pop mainstream.
Never the most sophisticated track but always one that fills a dance floor and puts a smile on every face.
I’ve seen this go down a storm in the Manchester Hacienda too!
#PumpUpTheJam
#circuittracks
Check out Dr.Mix’s excellent breakdown video here;
ua-cam.com/video/YSO8gH0_uMM/v-deo.html
Once again it is direct audio out from the groovebox. No extra synths or drum machines and played live.
I hope you like it.
(….thinking of putting a little 'sandstorm' in my Circuit Tracks now I’ve done this) ;)
Details for synth nerds.
Once again we quickly run out of synth tracks on the Circuit Tracks.
To get round this I tried to create a pad patch that could also play the lead melody and layered the various parts on the same track.
The bass should be a bit beefier (the original was a Yamaha DX) but I’ll try and fix that for the Circuit Tracks&Rhythm version soon.
The various 909 samples are just tailor made for this and the track uses the same lashes of delay as per the original.
I’ve tried recording the stereo audio and adding it to the video - first time doing this so I hope it syncs up and is worth the effort in terms of enhanced audio.

You Got The Love/The Source - Novation Circuit Tracks & Rhythm version.

As promised here's my first version of the song with the Circuit Rhythm adding extra drum tracks and sample space for vocals. #YouGotTheLove The original version (Erens 12" Bootleg) used part of Jamie Principle's 'Your Love' . Additionally they mixed it with further production and a vocal lifted from Candi Staton's track 'You Got The Love'. I hope you like it - I'm pleased with how it's turning...

Time for the first British acid house hit and another Hacienda favourite. The Manchester act A Guy Called Gerald blew up the Manchester music scene with his 808 and 303 tour-de-force. He's still making excellent music @AGuyCalledGeraldTV #voodooray Everything you hear was programmed into the Novation Circuit and played ‘live’ straight out of the headphone jack into my phone. No extra effects or...
Blue Monday/New Order (edit) - Novation Circuit version

It's Monday so what could be more apt than todays Hacienda club classic, Blue Monday. #bluemonday As per usual this is ALL Novation Circuit Tracks playing live from the headphone jack direct into my phone. No extra synths/no effects/no extra edits. There is a lot going on in this track so I've squeezed a bit extra out of the groovebox in using some short melodic samples in place of drum sounds ...

This one is another classic and will be more familiar to many as the basis for the fantastic "You Got The Love" by The Source. The original version by Jamie Principle is thought by many to be the first house track. This version is modelled after the original and will be the basis for my version with added Cicruit Rhythm providing some sampled vocals. For now it's the same deal. One single groov...

As promised a slightly expanded version of this track (following the 120BPM Fingers Inc version with samples). Once again it is just the headphone out, no extra processing, played 'live' direct into my phone. Hope you like it! (and again let me know if there is a particular House classic you think would work well) Synth nerd details below; Having the Circuit Rhythm beside the Tracks let me spli...

I thought I'd do another seminal house classic inspired by the Isotonik Sound Pack, '90s House Dream' by Yves Big City. ua-cam.com/video/R1foV7Y-k6g/v-deo.html Same deal as before - everything you hear is direct out from the headphone socket on the Tracks. No editing/no fx. Lot's of track sharing and voice stealing going on but I've tried to recreate most of the 'flavour' of the original. Big t...

I bought the Isotonik patch pack, "90s House Dream" by Yves Big City and it's huge fun. It has a lot of Manchester Hacienda vibes and had me reminiscing about seeing this played live there in the early 90's. #MrFingers #canyoufeelit I thought I'd try and do a version just using the Circuit Tracks - the headphone out straight to my iPhone, no extra synths, no extra effects or processing. This is...

This is just a part 1 so you get a chance to see what's in the box and the internals. I plug it in so you can hear the fans. I'll follow up when my M.2 drives arrive and I will test the speed and thermals, and fan noise under load. Just FYI the Y-power connector works great with my Minisforum MS-01. Might just be an all-flash super-NAS if the drives are fast enough over USB4 or Oculink...... Le...

excellent !
Thanks again. Appreciated.
Nice work
Thank you! Cheers!
Too good!!
Thanks a lot 😊 fantastic to have your feedback. Any requests in a simiar genre?!
Amazing tune !!!
Glad you liked it. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.
Cool
Appreciate the feedback. Glad you liked it.
@guinan6631 🙂
This is the musical equivalent of building a ship in a bottle - well done!
I love the analogy! Some might say it's cheating but those samples on the pads are just made for adding one-shots and despite what people say the sample memory is ample. Thanks for the support.
Blimey a lot of effort has gone into this. Sounds like you nailed the melodic programming and arrangement.
The bass patch isn't as good as it could be and the arpeggio is a bit of a cheat (added a couple of notes as I couldn't get quite the right sound). Thanks though....when I do it on both Rhythm and Tracks as a duet it'll have more room to breathe (and space to add some of the whooshes and swoops). Just programming them now so stay tuned!
Loving this, the best of your classics so far. I wonder how hard it would be to nail the SH101 hi res sound on the Circuit.
I had a few goes (adding ring modulation and vsync to get that discordant sound) but couldn't get it to a point I was happy. This was my sonic compromise till I work on the Rhythm & Tracks duet version soon....keep an eye out for it.
Everyone’s a classic so far!!
If you're going to have a try at a version of your own on whatever device you use then I'd recommend you check out this video of Ski Oakenfull's deconstruction of the song ua-cam.com/video/P-FRgsmMtAQ/v-deo.html It gave me lots of pointers as to how I could strip the song down and squeeze it into the Circuit Tracks.
How does it feel… To treat me like you do?
....thinking of leaving it as the instrumental version lol! Thanks for checking it out.
wow lol its awesome - dancing here
Hey thanks Derryn...glad you liked it!
BTW if you like this, please have a listen to the expanded version partnered with a Circuit Rhythm to do something more in the style of the Fingers Inc version (plus samples) ua-cam.com/video/9HowAUPsvZA/v-deo.html

Love your creative reply. Much appreciated!
I've owned a Circuit Tracks for a couple of years now but have never got further than making simple four bar Drum loops and Bass riffs. I like the work flow for experimenting with ideas, but I don't think It can compete with a DAW for making complete tunes. It's good to watch videos like yours to see how other people get the most out of it. From what I can see from your video, you're not chaining the patterns and allowing them to play from top to bottom. Instead, you've saved several two bar patterns to different scenes and are launching them sequentially. Is that right?
I thought the same for a long time just using the Tracks as a portable notepad for music ideas. I never got past the '2-bar' loop stage (I ran out of patterns for anything more than 12 bar songs) until I discovered two things. First was to write longer patterns by using the Pattern Settings to slow some of the patterns to get 4 or even 8 bar patterns - you sometimes then need to use the Micro Steps to place your notes at the right place or use unquantised recording. It then gives you much longer sequences and good for pads/slow chord changes without using up all you available patterns. Second you've noticed here is using Scenes that let you build up a bank of chained patterns PLUS track muting on&off so you can build up song sections and evolving arrangements. That's what you see me doing here...you can then, in fact, chain scenes to play back repeating song sections. Not sure if that makes it clearer - Gabe Miller does some great videos and it was one of his that gave me my eureka moment to start getting more use out of my Circuit Tracks ua-cam.com/video/JBLonF-siMA/v-deo.html I now turn to my Tracks over my DAW as I just get music made rather than getting bogged down in other things. DAWs almost have too many options that they can give you musicians block. I like to think of the Tracks as being 'limited in a creative way'. Makes me make music rather than altering settings/tweaking.
@@guinan6631 Thank you for your reply and the useful tips. I agree with your comment about too many options (in a DAW) stifling creativity.. Time now I think to get to know my Circuit tracks in more depth. One other gripe though, I wish components would come with factory synth presets, I don't fancy spending hours creating dozens of patches. Thanks again for the advice!
There are a few great demo packs available from Novation for download. I’ve bought some packs from Isotonik I’d recommend too that helped get me going with creating new patches (this started off life as the ‘90s House Dream’ pack from Isotonik).
The old packs for the original Circuit have also been converted to the Tracks format and offer quite a selection of preset sounds too novationmusic.com/articles/rediscover-the-original-circuit-packs-now-available-for-circuit-tracks/
The Isotonik packs are here isotonikstudios.com/product-category/synth-patch-store/circuit-tracks-patch-store/ I’d recommend anything by Yves Big City or A Force Truly Evil. I have the pack that adds recreations of the OP-1 too that is great. BTW quite a few free/demo and pay what you like packs here too. Enjoy!
Great cover! Love this song

Sounds cool🔥
Thanks @clai.r....love your stuff too. Great sounds and truely original (have subscribed!)
Awesome!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Cool!
Thanks...still needs some work. Will polish it up more when I do a version with both Novation Circuit Tracks & Rhythm.

Thanks for the support....working on the Double Circuit (Tracks and Rhythm) version now....
❤❤❤❤❤❤ this is exactly my era!!
Thanks for the encouragement. I'll let you know when I post the Tracks&Rhythm combined version.
@ please do!!
It doesn’t work
Still working for me...on original battery too!
Just some advice, your portafilter looks pretty dirty where it seals against your group head, I'd take a brush to your seal. This also would help your puck sucker as it has very little suction power, even a small amount of grounds between the portafilter rim and its seal will reduce vacuum greatly. Now that you have had some time with it, what are your thoughts?
Thanks...I'd agree. The perils of one handed filming ;) The unit is still going strong on the original battery with daily use..around 3 coffees per day. My other half prefers the knock box that came with my Breville but surprisingly I'm still using it. It does have the odd misfire if I allow the seal to become dirty but otherwise all good! Still not sure about the name though.....
A quick knock or a annoying DC motor sound. yea, ok.
I'm guessing you're a knocker....
Volume way too low.
Thanks for feedback...first attempt and can fix but haven't figured out how to reupload.
@@guinan6631 Volume probably fine for many people but I have a hearing problem. I still gave you a thumbs up :)
Fab video many thanks. I know it is dependant on many factors, but what roast are you using and what grind size have you used there please it is a fab shot!
stali.com.au/products/st-ali-wide-awake came free from Breville as part of same promotion. It's good - but likely you have an artisan coffee roaster near that can do something as good (I think I had it on grind size 18 on my machine).
Thanks for the video but are you kidding me? I wish I got my few minutes back from watching this. Who would buy this? I rather have a gadget that will unzip my bag of coffee.
LOL....look for the onscreen button with two vertical lines next time! Breville are working on 'The Pack Ripper' as we speak (though I have TM the name)....
Agree the coffee machine is great, but there is a learning curve. Cannot think of a good reason to pay out £80 on the Puck Sucker just to avoid having to go Tap, Tap a couple of times, though!
Thought the same but got it as a special deal....still using it every day (and battery going strong).....
Have you tried it with the single shot basket as they tend to be a wetter puck that doesn’t knock out cleanly. We mainly pull singles and this would be great it it works with the single basket?
Might be my single shot technique but wet puck. Sucks it out but not cleanly and leaves a rim of coffee grounds. Not ideal.
I always use a tamper after the automatic tamp as I find the dose more consistent plus the portafilter is cleaner as well, thanks for the review and let's see if Black Friday will reduce the price of this item
I've adjusted the coffe amount and the tamper pressure and don't seem to need an extra manual tamp? Hope you had sucess at the sales....
What about the single-dose basket? Does it work on that one too? I'm having problems that coffee remains sticking in the edge of the basket... (I know I should be using the single-dose basket, but the wife does...)
I'll give it a go over the weekend and let you know. Should work as the sucker relies on vacuum through the portafilter. Nothing wrong with single shots!
Thank you so much for this video, we've been considering getting one but wanted to know how they worked first :D
Glad it was helpful! Let me know what you think when you get it.
Awesome first video! Thanks!
Thank you too!
I use a Breville infuser and I don't even use a knockbox. I hold my porta filter over the garbage or compost and just one or a few downward shakes without hitting anything gets the puck out. I imagine the seal has to be wiped regularly to ensure there is a proper seal. Silliest coffee product I have ever seen. Edit: How does this work with the double wall basket? that filter is a real pain to clean out. The puck sucker could be justified if it works with that.
The seal doesn't have to be as clean as you'd imagine because it has a soft rubberised-type coating that keeps the seal even when some dried on grounds are there...have neglected mine for last couple of weeks and still 'sucking pucks' so can say that I've tested this! I don't have the dual wall basket with my Oracle so haven't tested this but others may comment?
Well done on the review, just to advise, it’s called a porta filter not a group head :) the group head is where the porta filter goes onto on the machine :)
Thanks...I realised after I'd posted it (amazine what your mouth says when you are trying to film in one take!). See text underneath for correction :) lot's of new terminology for new baristas....
We've got the puck sucker on the way - same promotion after purchasing the Breville Oracle Touch. Interesting to see how it goes. What helped with our last coffee machine (Breville Infuser) was getting a bigger knock box. Much easier to get the puck out just with one hit and way less mess. The little one that comes with the Oracle is sooo small! I can highly recommend the Sunbeam "bang bang" (almost as ridiculous name as the puck sucker).
Thanks for the tip. I had looked at the bigger Breville 'Knock Box' but this arrived before I pulled the trigger and so far has served me well.
I’ve had the puck sucker for a while now. It works a lot better than a knock box as far as I am concerned. As long as the portafilter is seated properly, the puck comes out after around 1 second, and it’s very quiet - not sure what’s going on with people who say it’s louder than a knock box? It could be improved by adding a soft rubber seal around the opening so that the placement of the portafilter doesn’t have to be so precise, but as long as you put it down straight, it sucks the puck like the box says!
What kind/brand of beans did you use for your shot?
The coffee in the video is the Wide Awake blend from St Ali, Melbourne, Australia. Came as a months supply as part of the promotion. Very good, fresh and enjoyable. I'd definitely recommend checking out your local coffee roaster though - they'll be happy to give you advice about the type of beans to suit your taste. The Breville really shines with fresh beans. The beans in the video are here; stali.com.au/products/st-ali-wide-awake
Solution looking for a problem
I wouldn't completely disagree though still using the 'sucker'....
Slower than a knock box. Doesn’t sound quieter. Way more expensive. Will eventually break. I see no reason whatsoever to buy this
Baaahahaha my thoughts exactly. I guarantee that any normal person who buys this will use it for a couple weeks and then go right back to the knock box. Easier more convenient couple knocks and done besides it's also quieter lol...
Still using mine even though I thought the same initially.
@@guinan6631 Well I guess I was wrong then. Good stuff hope it lasts.
My puck sucker is on the way. BestBuy has a discount price. Breville Canada does not list it on the website. I have the Oracle Touch.
Don't you want the succ?
that name :D
Before I posted the video I searched 'deep' for information....Google was determined to serve me links to information about 'Sucker Punch'.
@@guinan6631 Breville / Sage released this product yesterday. I'm really surprised that you were able to buy this a few months ago.
They gave them away (as test marketing) as part of a promotional pack for Father's Day in Australia. Looks like they are rolling them out gradually around the world judging by the views for this video. Out of stock currently here in Australia.
Is this the official real name?..
LOL...my thoughts exactly. Maybe I've just got a smutty mind....
"the Puck Sucker™" is what it says on the box.
If it came with the machine then maybe... if I had to buy it? Heck no...
I wasn't sure if it was worth the asking price to buy one when I received it. I have however used it several times a day since getting it...
Will be interesting to see if the battery lasts 12 months.
Still going strong for now...depends on how bad your coffee habit is.
Word of advice to e61 owners who are eyeing this, got a mate to bring it to my place, we tried it on my e61 p/f about 2 dozen times, only got 3-4 clean 'removals/sucks'. His Breville p/f seems to be of a slightly different design and his one worked in about 75-80% cases, but even so, it's a case of hit and miss. Might need to wait for V2, fingers crossed, as I'd really appreciate a less 'banging' option for our household.
Thanks for testing this out. Really helpful.
I have the same, and it works great every time first time. Just be sure to place horizontal. Could not do with out this little unit. Got via the gift pack with the double boiler.
Good tip! I'd also recommend keeping the area where the portafilter fits in super clean as you then get a better seal and better suction on your pucks.
Can it support 54mm portafilter?
It's very much designed to fit the 58mm Breville Portafilter and has to make an airtight seal....their website implies it'll only work with Breville portafilters. Will have to try it with another type of 58mm!
No
I've seen people say it does actually work on their 54mm ones but you need to position it carefully.
