Episode 5: Sheldon Crocker
"The journey isn't about what you leave behind, but what you're willing to walk through to get to the other side." These are the words that this episode's guest lives by. And today we hope you, the listener, feels empowered to do the same.
Sheldon Crocker is a Newfoundlander, motivational speaker and author of the book "Road to Resilience," in which he talks about his journey with Arthrogryposis.
Arthrogryposis is a condition in which a person has multiple joint contractures (in other words: stiffness), and where the range of motion of a joint is limited. But as Sheldon describes in this episode, he did not allow the disability to limit his own potential. As a child, Sheldon was told he would be unable to walk. Today, he's a finisher at a 10-mile race in Newfoundland.
In this conversation with Michelle and Amanda, he imparts valuable knowledge on how to build mental fortitude to overcome stigmas associated with disability. Sheldon also talks about adversity from his life - childhood abuse, addiction and disability - and how he used setbacks as a fuel to propel forward.
The episode is akin to a motivational pep talk to take on whatever life throws at you, and to use the same hurdles to become the best version of yourself.

You need to work with other advocacy organizations to launch a large scale ad campaign so that this issue is right in the face of all politicians across this country. It seems they aren't seeing all the news articles and studies on this subject. It needs to be posted all over in Toronto, Ottawa, Victoria and large scale cities all over billboards, bus-stops, busses, and just EVERYWHERE. Don't be afraid to use pictures of the daily struggles to show politicians and Canadians what the effects of their condescending treatment of persons with disabilities does.

People with disabilitys arent ABLE to work. We are automatically excempt. We have bills too. How much farther are we going to be pushed down, and for how much longer will we be ignored ?

You should speak to Jagmeet and the NDP since they are propping up this government from an election. We could extract what we need from the Liberals through this Fall Economic Statement if you implore to Jagmeet that this is an important policy. Tell them the benefits this could have on their political futures based on 27% of the population being disabled and the voting power we hold as a demographic.

ya I haven't had a family Doctor in over 4 years. On a Government waiting list. So there is nobody to fill out disability tax credit paperwork and I don't work so to me it made no sense going for it. It's ridiculous. If you are on something like ODSP you should get the top up automatically. It's pretty obvious to me they ignored everyone saying this just to get out of giving the top up to those of us who need it most. That's just sad and disgusting treatment of disabled people in this Country.

The Disability Tax Credit is so hard to receive. I applied 8 months ago for my 80 year old uncle who is in LTC he is also low income so won’t even help him. CRA finally approved and the credit means nothing for him. The CRA messed up his file for 8 months, terrible services.

Also have to consider some arent on provincial benefits, but Long term disability through a work contract or insurance. I dont get Saskatchewan SAID because my LTD is comperable already. Ive been getting around $1200 for 15yrs , so every extra $ helps, but I was definitely hoping to get to the poverty line at the very least, but wishful thinking. I do have DTC thankfully, it has helped a bit, but you're right on how hard it is, elegibility needs to be expanded and less restrictive. My doctor had to make sure the wording was just right (like "enduring and life-long") I am super worried Canada Life will gobble up any CDB as overpayment too.

The language on the Disability Application Form needs to change. For example, they need to stop telling people with disability to ask friends and family for money. Also, they need to stop 18 year old children of disabled people to "get a real job" to support their parents. The CPPD is only good for people who are on their death beds.

Lol...really? I have to read up on it. But anything to do with getting help from the gov't seems ridiculous. It seems more like they do as little as they have to. Just to say they have these programs & help. Cuz its either super hard to get excepted. Or...its such a small amount. It doesn't go with the times. My rent is more than my disability cheque. And they've got a new housing program now which helps. But its only for 5 yrs. And its just to get you off the waiting list for housing. BUT...WHAT DO I DO NOW WHEN THE 5 YRS IS UP?? Its ridiculous...I'll be in worse shoes. If they don't keep it up. Cuz rents are crazy now. So what are they going to be in another 4 yrs? I'm terrified. And when you turn 65yrs old. They take your disability away. When you need your benifits & stuff that they cover the most. Like glasses & the dentist. Wont be able to afford rent. And im single with no family. Except a grandson that i dont want to depend on. He's got his own issues. I'm worried
