Stepladder Mountains High Point
Переглядів 921 день тому
Stepladder (2,940') is a geologic wonder in the Mojave desert. It has an improbable system of ledges that makes the ascent possible without ropes.
Death Valley Buttes
Переглядів 14Місяць тому
Death Valley Buttes are mountains just off Daylight Pass Road. The East Butte is lower and class 1. A nice trail runs along the ridge line. The higher West Butte requires some class 3 and has an exposed ledge near the top. Short and sweet.

Mount George Davis (aka Mount Thoreau). Took the Lamarck Lakes trail to the lower lake, then left the trail, crossed the Wonder Lakes, then climbed up to George Davis. Perfect weather. An Iron Hiker production.

Views from Panther Peak in Sequoia National Park. Snow made the final 100' quite a bit more difficult. Exhilarating scenery.

Desperately trying to land a drone in high winds
Gateway to some of the finest areas in the state.
Hi Keith. Where was this filmed? Any damage to the drone?
Tom, The rotors were ok, but the gimbal was damaged and any video shot after that was unstable. Fortunately, my extended service was still valid. DJI sent me a new drone within a week after I mailed it in.
Oh, filmed on Chemehuevi Peak. Mojave.
@@ironhiker Interesting location. Glad DJI replaced the drone for you and it's too bad they're being banned. I have one myself. 😟
@@tompatton2086 I read there was a bill in the House that would ban them. It would have to pass the Senate and be signed by the President, so maybe it won't happen. It it does, our drones might become valuable (haha). Maybe it would revive US drone makers like Skydio so they would start selling to the hobbyist market again.
Very cool video!
Thanks, Zogador!
That’s impressive!
im aout to do this hike in a week and am super excited
Great video, any luck finding a peak register?
Yes! Go to 1:38 in the video to see exactly where it is.
Thanks for the detailed write up with photos in the blog site. Very useful. I am thinking of doing it one of the weekends in August. Couple of questions: 1. Ranger station recomments driving from Dyer to the trail canyon trailhead. But, you took the queens mine trailhead. Did you research and decide? Your suggestion? 2. I am planning to rent an AWD and might be alone driving to the trail and doing the hike. Will I be able to drive until the mine (1.2 mile below the Queen Mile trailhead) in the AWD. Anything hard to maneuver driving alone until mine. Does it require high clearance to drive until that point. Thanks for your help. Regards, Ravi
Hey Ravi, Re 1: I did compare both routes. The Trail Canyon road looks harder to follow, several turns I think. Queen Canyon was straight forward. Also, the Trail Canyon route is supposed to have steep sections of scree that people complain about going both ways. Re 2: The road starts out OK, then gets worse the higher up you go. There are some ruts up to the mine, but the last 1.2 miles or so are really rough. I had to stop and get out to look at a couple of obstacles before driving over them. The last part needs both high clearance and 4x4 IMO. I drove it alone.
@@ironhiker Thanks. I am hoping the vehicle clearance is high enough to go until mine.
Beautiful shot. buddy. :)
@@OutdoorExistential thanks man, it was a weird moment
@@ironhiker In the good way I hope.
@@OutdoorExistential yes, very good to catch a cloud moving fast so dramatically.
Ah, Pine Mountain, my favorite peak in all of ANF! The most beautiful, IMO, especially from the view near the junction of Acorn and PCT. Spectacular when snow-capped. Such a fun hike from Wrightwood.
My second time on Pine. It was a back up plan since I found the ACH closed at Vincent Gap. Super nice area.
Amazing video. Thanks for sharing. 👍1
Amazing video. Thanks for sharing. 👍2
Nice going Keith! You're getting some big desert peaks. ;)
Dude, Big Maria was a blast! I am torn between this an Chuckwalla for the best overall desert views.
@@ironhiker good point! Sounds like you're working the DPS. :)
Natureza ❤
Thank you
Metal church at end if video?
Haha! Sounds like it, but it's a Doom cover by Chris Barker.
Such and amazing canyon, i was there late in Feb after a good rain, it was flowing really nice throughout the canyon. One of these days you will need to go have a look again with higher flow. I posted my trip to my FB if you're interested i can send it to you.
It is a crazy, wild canyon. I'd like to reach the bottom of the falls on a future trip, but I haven't gotten around to it. I'd be interested to see your trip report if you can share it.
😱😱😱😱
So, did you make it from Alamo Mtn across the ridge? I've tried twice from Piru creek but the brush just gets too dense past halfway camp!
Started from Buck Creek trailhead. Here is the full report: ironhiker.blogspot.com/2014/05/cobblestone-mountain-sewart-mountain.html
Such a bad ass traverse. I want to do this some day. Roughly how many miles from Joe elliot to etiwanda is it?
8.4 miles round trip, about 2900' gain
@@ironhiker very nice
Simply Beautiful!! Thank you for sharing.
Glad you liked it!
Great video! That sandy approach road is a bit scary to drive.
Yeah, saw no cars once I Ieft I-40, super isolated. A breakdown or mishap would have been serious trouble.
Nicely done!!!
What date was this filmed?
7/3/2023
@@ironhiker Thank you!
Nicely done! It's fun to see this peak from a new perspective.
So many dogs on trail. I think I counted six!
Is shaver state or federal lake?
Federal Sierra National Forest, but the land around it is owned by Edison and they operate the lake and campgrounds.
That's a juicy snake!
That scree gets us everytime! One step forward, one big slide back! You're the first I've ever heard of anyone doing the scree face! Impressive!
East Ord is a great one! I even did the ridge NW of it after, and spectacular views all around! Windy on top!
I saw some bighorns on that NW ridge, but they were too far away to photograph. I think there might be a mining road that goes part way up that part of the mountain.
Yo Kieth! I have a question about a hidden gem. Any chance you would reach back out?
What is the question? I'll try to answer if I can.
I'd been curious about that little promontory for a bit myself! Not surprised it'd be a thrasher to reach though!
Thanks, cool view of the west ridgeline. Makes me want to go climb it.
Very cool to see this side of the mountain. Enjoy all your videos. And fun to hike together the other day.
Thanks! Yeah, glad we could get a couple peaks in, bigger fish next time.
What's next?
Is this near Silverado canyon? Looks like it
Looks fun, and difficult
That's a great peak. Nice to see the top done footage. Thanks 😁
Short and sweet! Got Little Chuckwalla on the way out.
How hard is the normal route?
Sean, there isn't a "normal" route as far as I know. Four years ago, Adam Walker found a way up a steep mud wall and everyone since has followed his route. See this trip report and photos by Craig Barlow (photos.app.goo.gl/V7KgYUzojjrJWPd29). I still think there must be an easier way, but I haven't found it yet. I tried going up the base of the same ridge, but it was pretty shattered and felt very unstable (ironhiker.blogspot.com/2022/12/mecca-hill-benchmark-attempt.html).
I am in La Quinta now. Not too far away.
wow. my username shows as @user-xt4vx6ss7d What the heck is going on?
@@hello-ji7qj It shows up as "hello" to me. LaQuinta has a great set of small desert peaks.
I really enjoyed this peak, despite taking a yucca stab to the thigh. I think it was my first or second DPS. Thanks for the awesome video, and memories.
Zogador, This was my second summit, first time was 2013 via DPS route B (southwest ridge). This time, I took the north ridge from Henderson Canyon. I thought north ridge was a little easier, but I'm more experienced now, so not sure. It's an iconic mountain looming over Borrego Springs and Palm Canyon. One of my favorite desert peaks of all time. First time to visit the south summit.
Really scenic. love the agave deserti and the prow.
Looks like some good scramble terrain
It's a popular bouldering area. Later in the day, I saw three groups around Boulder Basin campground heading out with their crash pads.
hey
Awesome Keith!
Cool video. Never seen a bear that high in a tree.
Sean, yeah, a first for me too! I wonder what it was doing up there.
This is so cool. I’ve been hiking and camping out there for a long time and have never seen a bear.
My buddy ran into a bear with a cub in the same place about a year earlier. If you venture north into the wild part of the canyon, you are bound to meet one.
Dude, this is epic. I've always wanted to climb this but it looks too extreme for me possibly where you're at. I've done the basin multiple times, and thought I saw a possible way up behind Steelhead or Greenstone. How long did this take you? Thanks for the video, and amazing job climbing it.
Thanks! It took 7 hours and 45 minutes round trip from Sawmill Campground. I think the route I took was the easiest way. You are on a knife edge in a few places, but it's all class 2 with good holds and solid rock. Here is the full report: ironhiker.blogspot.com/2021/08/mount-conness.html
The ending climb up that loose exposed rock, absolutely unbelievable! Scared the crap out of me just watching. The best video footage of a traverse (or hike for that matter) I've seen.
It was scary to watch it happen in real time. Glad you liked it.
Nice!!!! Rattlesnakes out yet?
Didn't see any snakes all day, even though it was warm enough
Nice!
Cool stuff. Merry Christmas!
Thanks for Hines, Sean! Merry Christmas back.
