Downtown block shut down amid major structure fire
A major structure fire in the downtown core has drawn in fire departments from Orillia and the surrounding townships, shutting down the block near Peter Street and Mississaga Street.
At 7:23 a.m., the fire department received a call about the fire, which has impacted Dr. Comics, a local salon, other businesses and the apartments above those businesses near the Peter and Mississaga intersection.
Melissa Gowanlock, the city's manager of communications, said power has been turned off in the area, and that no injuries have been reported at this time.
At around 8:30 a.m., firefighters could be seen fighting the blaze from an aerial platform, as thick smoke engulfed the area and towered above downtown buildings.
Gowanlock asked people to avoid the downtown area as firefighters work to put out the blaze.
"We ask residents in the area to stay inside with their windows closed," she said. "We ask residents to stay away from the downtown at this time."

My first barber shop 55 years ago . This was arson and if found guilty he will probably spend 7 days in jail !

Thank you for the excellent coverage of this tragic event. Fortunately no one was injured, however the news said unit next door has extensive water and smoke damage.
That fire was burning for a whole day.
Ohhh how sad! I moved away to BC but I used to always sit across from the opera house with my grandparents when I was younger and again when I had my son to watch parades
I'm relieved that nobody was injured & that emergency services personnel are all safe. It's sad that such a beautiful building has been destroyed. Glad there are no apartments in the building, but still a loss for the business owners and people who rented office spaces upstairs.

Thank you. You can see my apt a block away. I have no sense of smell and my neighbour told me it was happening. I heard the sirens but when you live doentown, you often hear them. It was roo cold to go out and find where it is but through google I found a CTV article and I thought, "I doubt it, we're so small here but naybe there's a video in YT. And here ya're. Thank you so kuch. 🌈🙏💖 If you don't know about it, there was a huge fire here in 1908 that burned half of downtown. These buildings are soooo olllld. That's why us poor people pive in them lol.
