Utter Nonsense Productions - Mark Cator
United Kingdom
Приєднався 17 лис 2020
Utter Nonsense Productions is a small outfit devoted to photography and films. Each week is put out a small ‘podcast’ on either a photograph, photographer, photobook or film. It’s fairly random and sometimes I miss out on a few weeks. All of the works and photographers have been a massive influence and inspiration. Hope you enjoy. There are amazing artists out there.

Prayers for the Stolen, Tatiana Huezo
Переглядів 1452 роки тому
How can you live with violence, I mean real violence. Violence that creeps into every vestige of your daily life, violence that is determinant on men divined by their propagating of fear, their servile devotion to aggression, their lip service to the powerful. In Tatiana Huezo’s film, Prayers for the Stolen, this growling, grinding presence percolates unseen amongst a mountain village and the v...
Thomas Ruff, Zeitungsfotos
Переглядів 812 роки тому
There’s this casual intimacy where each reading, each time you pick up Thomas Ruff’s, Zeitungsfotos, it’s as if for the first time. You can let the pages fall randomly, or leaf through consecutively, all of the 400 newspaper photographs, within a context that becomes one’s own imaginings. The simplicity and exacting discipline carries the viewer on their own re-imagined wandering. It’s as if tu...
Karl Blossfeldt, 1865-1932
Переглядів 9792 роки тому
Karl Blossfeldt unwittingly became the artist of others making. He set out with a quest - a fascination with the structure of plants and their organic configuration - which had little to do with his subsequent recognition as one of the great artist photographers of the 20th century. By training and profession, he was not a photographer and had never published a photograph until in his early six...
Larry Burrows, wounded Marine, close to hill 484, DMZ, South Vietnam, 5th October, 1966
Переглядів 3572 роки тому
Hand staked out, eyes as vacant to the purpose of all conflicts, “why have you forsaken me, you gods of war,” and that one singular moment of stillness among so much existential suffering. And behind, the soldiers, inured to the numbing combine of eternal war, they don’t even look up, backs turned as we look on, us as distant witness to the futility of that ultimate political expression, war.
Film Friday - Sister, directed by Ursula Meier. Cinematography, Agnes Godard
Переглядів 1582 роки тому
The film, set between the rarefied atmosphere of a mountain ski resort and the industrial valley below, pivots around Simon, a twelve-year-old child seeking love. Simon lives with his sister, Louise, who is constantly in and out of jobs, battling with boyfriends, and leaving her young brother to be the main breadwinner. This he does by stealing skis and ski clothing from ‘up top’ to sell in the...
Photobook Friday - Christopher Killip, Isle of Man: Abook about the Manx
Переглядів 1292 роки тому
Isle of Man: A book about the Manx was the first photobook I bought and now shows what the ‘seller’ might term, usage or, showing wear and tear with markings to the cover. Over the years, since its’ publication in 1980 by the Arts Council of Great Britain, I’ve leafed through its’ pages many, many times. Killip’s photographic approach mirrors that of Paul Strand’s work in the Outer Hebrides in ...
Photobook Friday - Bertien van Manen, A hundred summers, a hundred winters.
Переглядів 2552 роки тому
In, A hundred summers, a hundred winters, Bertien van Manen sees far beyond the restrictive tropes of the photojournalist, forging a personal and sincere relationship towards the people she meets, and where subject and photographer are equal. A hundred summers, a hundred winters, was published in 1994 by De Verbeelding Booksellers in Amsterdam and is widely regarded as the finest photobook on p...
Photographer Friday - Francesca Woodman
Переглядів 5362 роки тому
Francesca Woodman - It’s hard to formulate an understanding of someone so young, there’s little to fix of Woodman’s character outside of the visual determinism of an immensely creative, beguiling and talented teenager, driven to capture the fleeting experiences, and the raw sexuality of adolescence, all set amongst her constructs of Gothic tropes, masks, mirrors, dilapidated buildings and the f...

Film Friday - Sweet Thing, directed by Alexandre Rockwell
Переглядів 762 роки тому
Sweet Thing is a film where I felt exalted and defeated as one. It is tenderly observed, with an engaging soundtrack, a devastating performance by the young protagonists and resonates from start to finish with the resilience and freedom of childhood, their imaginings and their longings.

Great commentary and vid! 👍 Work like this nowadays is very dangerous, though. Getting that close to strangers is asking for trouble and very few photographers can pull that off.
Love this book by Josh
