A message from Yo-Yo Ma and Kathy Stott!
“It’s about conversation.” Yo-Yo Ma
Here’s a special offering from Kathy and Yo-Yo, which I’ve just been given permission to share publicly. Coming out of the Pandemic was one of the most optimistic moments, and I couldn’t resist reaching out to them knowing they were touring again. Half my life is currently spent working with talented students, and having this opportunity to share a surprise message from Yo-Yo was such an amusing treat and a great motivation just when everyone needed it.
I’ll always remember going to Tanglewood when I was 15 years old. My parents booked a ticket and there I was on my first solo voyage away from home for 8 weeks! It was the most amazing summer playing and listening to many concerts with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, not least sitting a few rows back from Yo-Yo Ma performing the Dvorak Concerto. What an immense force, not just for the cello fraternity, but for all of humanity. This undoubtedly spurred me on and remains a lasting memory from such an important moment in my formative life. Never in a million years did I imagine back in 1996 Yo-Yo saying one day, “But do listen to Guy, because he knows what‘s going on!”

Creative Cello Chat with Sheku Kanneh-Mason
Переглядів 5 тис.Рік тому
Today I had the pleasure of seeing my great cello friend, Sheku Kanneh-Mason. As he says during our interview, the cello introduces us to people. I met Sheku when he was just 8 years old, and already then he had that special quality. We have a lot to be thankful for and a lifetime full of surprises. During our chat at the Royal Academy of Music we explored themes around tradition and innovation...

Such a joy to play some Bach during lockdown, accompanied by dogs and birds in Cerne Abbas tonight! There’s no greater feeling than walking down to the Royal Oak close to 8pm and wondering where all the locals are, and then suddenly they all appear. (Delicious local ale too!)

Среднего положения крышки на рояле было бы достаточно для баланса.Возможно в зале слышимость другая.

Great piano playing but it is totally overwhelming the cello. I can't believe they didn't do a sound check before the performance. Or perhaps the recording mixer thought this was a piano sonata with cello accompaniment.

one don´t "accompany" the cellist in this huge sonata - please ! you are equal musicians . The word is old-fashioned even in collaboration with singers.

Something strange happens I watch a virtuosic cellist play. It seems as though his instrument is a close friend of his. For me, playing would be a dream come true. But my finger muscles are too spastic for me to play any musical instrument.

Beautiful. I would however like to have amplification applied to the piano. I found it to be somewhat subdued compared to the strings in this particular recording. I understand the volume levels in a certain environment can be challenging to balance but like a more forceful stronger piano sound applied for example at the 9 minutes time interval in this recording. Nicely done overall.

Guy, this is SO wonderful. AMAZING!!! I only know of Steve Doane through his rep at Eastman. Steven Isserlis has been a constant source of inspiration, really, since the quarantine in early 2020. And so I had heard snippets of Steven talking about his early musical influences (Jane Cowan, really). But having this interview with he and Steve Doane as they reminisce about their formative experiences is utterly priceless. We hear how a musical life evolves even to the point where it became essential that Steven (w/sisters, no less!) be relocated to the country for a period of years something that is probably unthinkable in these times. Also, it appears that it was not at all fun and games with Jane Cowan and took a strong ego to deal with her uneven moods. But her phrases about the music coming first, knowing the score, and the bow as a living thing loom large as I listen to Isserlis play. Finally, thank you for elucidating a bit Steven's time at Oberlin w/Kapucinsky (sic) as I had always wondered how his time there either influenced his career. I look forward to following your journey as well as a performer and advocate, Guy. Thank you again for doing this walk down memory lane with the two 'Steves)!

Guess that string was very old and rusty. I never have that issue because I always let my strings stretch, and use pencil graphite to lubricate the nut and bridge. My Cello is a 5 String Acoustic-Electric Cello, I use D'Addario Helicore Cello Strings (4/4 Size Medium Tension plus a Matching High E String) which have a Stranded Steel Core to make Bowing on the Cello easier. I replaced the friction pegs with mechanical ones that also allowed me to get rid of those fine tuners from the tailpiece, so that tuning is easier and the top will vibrate more freely. They're Guitar Style Tuners designed for Cello which point away from the headstock so that means they'll point over your shoulder when the Cello is in playing position.

Doubt that a cellist of any skill would play on a rusty string. Old, possibly, but he was really just putting a lot of pressure on it.

My bassoon stopped working in the middle of a concert during a solo sort of moment with another instrument in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto in C-Major. I fixed it on the spot in like 5 seconds (which felt an eternity). So I understand the pain when there is a malfunction. You just got to do your best and move on. Bravo! He sounded absolutely great!
