Museum & Art Swindon, formerly, Swindon Museum and Art Gallery, aim is to safeguard, enhance, exhibit and celebrate Swindon’s collections for visitors, now and in the future.
The Museum was founded by Charles Gore in 1919 as a place to display his extensive geological collections. Gore acquired natural history, egyptological and ethnographic collections, along with archaeological materials. Through time the collections have become more focussed on Swindon and the surrounding areas and we hold objects dating from prehistory to the present showing the development of the area and the people who lived in it.
In 1941 the art collection was established by an impressive donation of 21 works by a local businessman HJP Bomford. This collection has been built on and today Swindon Museum and Art Gallery (Swindon MAG) owns a modern art collection of outstanding quality and importance. In addition we also hold an excellent collection of studio ceramics and a number of local artworks.

Art Snap Ep 14: Refugees and British Art
I love Richard Smith art
Interesting to know what's gonna happen to it, I was wondering for a while, just didn't find this video until now
i've certainly enjoyed this 'little bit of art appreciation'! There seems so much more of lasting interest in landscape painting such as the Paul Nash and Roy Bizley, than with the record of someone's experience of a walk. However, the creation of an installation from natural materials in the landscape, opens up great possibilities After all what could be more moving than Stonehenge? Hm. But those materials are not natural to that landscape!
I don't know the work of John Ferguson either but this strikes a strong note of reference to Cezannes still life subject matter and treatment, I mean the white draped cloth, the prominent presence of table edge, the tipped up perspective of plate and grouping of apples, etc. In short, a homage to Cezanne? I didn't know the work of Gardiner either, and didn't know oil pastels were used much at that date - Thank you for both introductions. Those Hilton colours are so redolent of the period, sort of all embracing neutrals. Not for me!
Thanks for listening Juliet, and for your intriguing observations... The colours feel a little bit Cezanne too don't they!
Thank you for sharing these, the reader has such a lovely voice. It was a pleasure learning something new. Greetings from a Polish girl studying in France :)
I love that Two Walks piece.
It's great isn't it... really makes us think more deeply about the way we interact with landscapes and record the journeys we take...
listening to this from Australia
Wow, it's fantastic that visitors from across the globe are willing and able connect with the collection, and the wonderful Bloomsbury artists! Thank you!
Lovely to see these and know that they are in Swindon! I much enjoyed your comments and being reminded that they broke down the boundaries between fine art, craft and decorative art. Simon and I visited Charleston last year and were struck by how much GREY Vanessa used, to such good effect! Much to learn...Thank you
Really glad you enjoyed this Juliet! Thank you for your lovely comments :)
I have to say I love the lithographs the best.I find them so atmospheric. Thank you Katie.
Thank you. Really interesting. I never make it to talks at The Museum, so this is great!
You're very welcome! We're glad this gave you the chance to hear more about the collection.
Thank you Katie for this.
That Richard Hamilton Interiors one is one of my favourites. I love that.
Glad you love it as much as we do! What an amazing piece to have in the collection...
@@MuseumArtSwindon - Yes! I agree. :-)
Brilliant and informative talk thank you Katie, really enjoyed this episode and will now listen to the others.
Thank you Henny - I hope you enjoy the others too!
Wonderful
Amazing. Two paintings there I’m pretty sure I’ve not seen before. This is such a wonderful initiative,
These podcasts are wonderful. I’ve come in with this one. I’ll do the rest now. I love this Leslie Cole work, it’s very affecting. I wrote about Cole and this painting in #secretswindon - him having come to my attention as I was writing that book. Well done on these Katie.
Thank you Angela! It's always great to meet another Leslie Cole fan... We hope you enjoy the rest of the Art Snaps!
Swindon Museum & Art Gallery - Yes. I do like Leslie Cole. That book the museum has about him is a thing of wonder. And Swindon born too. #Swindonisawesome Congratulations to all on these podcasts. Wonderful idea.
Another interesting thing about the Bomford gift is 'what might have been'. Looking through Francis Bacon's catalogue raisonné I discovered that several of the painter's major works were owned by Bomford and on loan for a while at Swindon Museum.
When I was studying at Essex University in the mid-80s I lived around the corner from Dickie and Dennis whose house in Wivenhoe overlooked the River Colne, and landscapes very similar to this painting. Their drunken antics with Francis Bacon around Wivenhoe, where Bacon also owned a house for a couple of years, was the stuff of legends.
Amazing - thank you for sharing that!
I love having drawings dissected for me! So interesting - thank you!
This was so interesting Katie! Thanks so much.
THANK YOU
Thank you so much. I have been around the museum a couple of times but having your descriptions with the paintings makes so much difference.
Katie, thank you so much for that great art snap. A great escape from these troubled times. Looking forward to listening to all of them.
Thank you Katie; looking forward to the other Art Snaps.
