Shingle roof leaking at wall

The owner just moved in and noticed a leak in the porch below; after looking at the roof I can see that someone has been struggling with this leak, there is some kind of sealer applied to the masonry as well as 10 different colors of sealant that have been applied over what looks like years.
Roof leaking for no apparent reason

It doesn’t happen often but once in a while we find a house with a leak and we can’t find the exact cause, it could be a little tiny pinhole somewhere so the only thing to do is to remove shingles in spot areas until we find wet underlayment; once we find a wet underlayment we can follow it up stream to the cause.

Others had been working on the roof but it seems the problem was coming in higher above from the chimney cap.

This roof has a minor leak which can be repaired but the owners were concerned about the roof holding water over slightly more than half of it surface, I gave them a repair option just to stop the leak and another option to completely replace the roof and alleviate the ponding water.

This roof had a minor leak that occurred only during really heavy extended rains, I found the leak and then checked out the rest of the roof.
Roof leaking around vent pipe

This house was recently remodeled and where the old plumbing system and new tie together there is a leak when rain falls straight into the vent pipe, instead of ripping out thousands and thousands of dollars worth of tile I put a cap on the vent pipe and there should be no more water getting into the house.

This is a torch applied modified bitumen roof, underneath it is likely a build up tar and gravel roof, it’s never a good idea to add another layer of roofing.
Leaking flat roof

This is a granular surface torch applied modified bitumen roof, the owner was sure that she needed a new roof but after my inspection I think it only needs a little bit of maintenance to get some more time out of it.
Roof slope too low for shingles

This porch addition roof was covered with shingles that weren’t installed properly, the bigger problem is that the slope is too low. The owner eventually had us replace the roof with a TPO membrane system.
Leaking from abandoned vent pipe on roof

We installed this roof about eight years earlier; the bathroom was remodeled last year and someone cut off a vent pipe but didn’t cap it on the roof.
My tar and gravel roof is about the same, so it can have shingles and tar too, the tar goes on not so steep slopes
Wouldnt the installation of a cricket be the best route? I see a lot of chimney leaks and my approach is almost always installing a cricket. Triangular, pitched from middle of chimney, cricket.

I have a fairly new roof, about five years old but did notice lots of drips "for the first time ever" during v heavy downpour .. at exhaust fan area in bath ceiling. On roof, I found the nail rise in the exposed lower rt corner of the vent housing on roof with the orig dab of caulk also missing. I cleaned up the area and also made sure enough drainage space around top and sides of vent .. The lower corner of the vent with the raised nail had lifted slightly so it formed a small pool above nail hole. Installed a narrow ss screw that fit snugly in place of loose nail that also fixed drainage angle of flange. Without disturbing any orig shingles, I lightly caulked lower edges of vent flange where it meets shingles with clear dap silicone to prevent wind from blowing in sideways, leaving bottom open for drainage and also caulked over all vent screw and nail heads. We just had over two inch downpour of rain and no leak .. all is ok. thx. It's amazing how much of a leak was caused by that one loose & raised nail on my vent.
How do you know its not a bullet hole ?
Any bullet holes I’ve ever found in a roof still had the bullet in it. But maybe it’s a little bullet hole.
@@LyonscontractingVA had hole in the roof and bullet ended up in the gutter.
