@@stephenclements6158 Throughout my life I'm sure i've hit most of these at one point or another! I've been the advisor before, maybe a bit of a rules lawyer in my younger years, I've been the "enforcer" who attempted in-game player-vs-player to rein in a bully player, the DM who had to address problem players, and I've been guilty of creating characters who were not team-oriented or suited to the campaign at-play. Of course these days I like to think I'm at least an expert player by now. My group has a rough average of system mastery for 2nd edition that we mostly know what's going on, but there are odd situations that we all have to look up now and again.

@@stephenclements6158 Yessir. It's why I don't get the OSR when it tries to emulate 2e. 2e is already there, incredibly modular, and aside from a few quirks that we've come to get used to and embrace over the years, it is all the system you need.

Indoctrination (like wokeism) isn't what I took from his words. I'm all for exploration and would be glad to see any and everybody making voyages to find what they can find wherever they choose to search. There's so much we don't know and I'd love to find it.

We are all imperfect, so no one can claim to always be right. The ironic thing is that they run around calling non-leftists, "nazis", while adopting the tactics actually used by the nazis, Add to that the current level of anti-semitism coming from the wokees because of the Israel-Palastine conflict and it's difficult to think of these people in any terms other than "nazis".

I was surprised, too, to find out about Joe's interest in the occult, thus why we had the talk! In reading your comment after the edit, I think you mistake what I said versus the topics you're raising. I see no evidence of Freemasons running the world, of us being Satanists, and of us having a solid claim to being the Knights Templar's modern incarnation. I have seen ample evidence that some Freemasons are interested in the occult, because I am one, am interested in it, and have seen presentations and books from brothers on it. Like anything else involving people, Masonic interests in different occult topics range wildly, and from what I've seen it's 100% self-directed. It is a modern Christianity-based mystery cult. I found reading Mackey to be self-aggrandizing fantasy and don't remember hearing about Manly Hall. There's no trouble in reconciling my Christianity with my membership in a club, because there is no conflict between them whatsoever. No man, deity, or spirit ever gained the least shred of a counterclaim on my allegiance to Christ, the Masonic instruction I've received has nearly all been Biblical teaching nobody would find out of place in a conservative Christian sermon, we honor the Old Testament prophets and the Apostles, and a requirement to join in the first place is to believe in a supreme being. If I were to discover a real conflict between the Masonry and my faith in Christ, Christ would win because Christ is king.

EDIT: (for paragraph separation/clarity) This is great and I'm glad Christ would win out. Praise the Lord! I guess freemasonry has always been a mystery to me. If there is some disconnect between it being directly connected to a sorteriology involving apotheosis why does it have the obvious reputation of being associated with that? All of the books I can find on it only bring into question or perpetuate the ambiguity of God's character rather than solidify His character as we know it from the Bible. Albert G. Mackey wrote the Encyclopedia of Freemasonry which is used in the lodges to my knowledge. At the very least I can see the website for the lodges in my area have links to his Encyclopedia. From this I know that Mackey is not discredited by his fellow masons. I can find where Mackey supports Hall and collaborated with him writing the book: 'The Influence of Pythagoras on Freemasonry” Hall was still given his degrees as a mason after having talked about masonry being associated with the mystery schools for decades, so they must not have wanted to dissolve this association with their organization. So when you say all of this interest in the occult is 'self-directed' I see it more as directed as a consequence of being a mason actually. (While maybe not for you specifically, at least for most masons eh?) While this morsel of Mackey's connection to Hall is but a convoluted 'morsel' of evidence it suffices as 'evidence' nonetheless. This is because all Hall ever talks about is enlightenment or at least the western equivalent of it, 'gnosis.' As Christians we are not to strive towards a merging with the 'godhead' through knowledge, this is a rather mystic idea.

@AnneONymous-m7w sure spell points can work great, and what you say makes sense. What do you think about systems that use no spell points or slots but allow for unlimited casting so long as you make a die roll? I've been looking more and more at that.

@AnneONymous-m7w I feel like it makes perfect sense within the fantasy setting if that's how it's presented. In Forgotten Realms they even write it into the lore that it was an extra restriction placed on mortal magic users after the fall of Netheril. But there are other methods to keep magic users in line, of course. I just prefer Vancian magic since I've never had any issues using it.

@@ClownKenny I'm glad the Bill Shatner pauses worked. 😎 Now that you mention it, I certainly haven't seen much discussion of how to become a quality player since 2e Dragon magazine went under. Yes, there are videos on how to be a great player, but many of them offload a lot of responsibility to other people. Especially nauseating is the idea that if the game sucks, it is 100% the DM's fault. Some of those videos are good, like Seth Skorkowsky's series on the topic, and that's partly due to him taking responsibility for his own screw ups. I guess it goes with the erosion of personal responsibility that has come with the generations, and that has ruined a lot of our society.

And I don't know how the producers could have differentiated it more from Cast A Deadly Spell to control expectations, but it would have helped. But Witch Hunt, the tonal shift was so jarring I actually stopped watching it on my first attempt. A few minutes later I thought maybe I wasn't looking at it how it was intended, opened my mind a bit wider, and then understood it.
